"Shadow Priests", "Armageddon", and "Khaosrealm" are all VERY good doomshop songs. The phonk and southern rap that doomshop and affiliates have been putting out has admittedly become a pretty oversaturated collective, even if the label has sorta died down when it comes to releases. However, it's the core three songs of this EP that prove, a focused, refined, and hard-hitting approach can still make for some of the best music of its kind. They were instantly in ... read more
Terrible.
CORTIS are a pretty fresh K-Pop group capitalizing off current musical trends with some pretty decent songs including "GO!" and "FaSHioN". COLOR OUTSIDE THE LINES, the EP those songs landed on, was pretty inconsistent and underwhelming overall, but it showed character and potential through certain qualities. However, it seems that, instead of honing their sound and ironing the lumps of their previous work, CORTIS have doubled down on what is an extremely patchy ... read more
This torture chamber quite honestly feels twice the length it actually is. “Bring emOut” and “Lets go home” are the only slightly-listenable songs. The rest hurts physically to listen to.
Last year's choke enough was so good it was intoxicating. Since its release, the album has consistently bounced in and out of my rotation with its absolutely addictive vibes. Its gorgeous yet reserved production and vocal styles ultimately make up a wonderful album, that just oozes with personality and an artistic vision. I could talk about how much I love that album all day, but point made.
Despite its presence in my rotation, I guess the deluxe release missed my radar, which is funny ... read more
Genuinely really good, I'm surprised to see this one not rated higher. The ambient pieces like "Eventual Needs", "Entire Absence (Fever Temperatures)", and "Uselessness of the Caused" are all absolutely beautiful tracks — the last is a bit long though. I think the notes of field recording actually add a lot, and they're sparse enough to not feel like an intrusion. Other than the last track not needing to be over 51 minutes, I have zero complaints. A ... read more
It's solid. For some reason a handful of these songs are inflated 1-2 minutes for what seems like no reason, and it can make certain songs lose their weight, but other than that and a couple less interesting songs, it's a solid record. Upon relisten, I enjoyed "Video Shoot" quite a bit more, and "Harry Potter" remains quality. There are some great bangers here too, namely "Breaking Down", "24Hrs", "Mark of Buddha", and ... read more
Nostalgia aside, this song is actually phenomenal. Every aspect of it just feels magical as hell.
Collaborating with Ian feels entirely against Sosa’s agenda. Just a weird collab all around.
Strongest Chris Crack drop in a fat minute. It’s of decent length, doesn’t sound like throwaways, cleaner flows, great production, really a lot going for it. It’s nice to see Crack putting out something that truly feels effortful as a whole. The last time we got something that sounded this developed was probably Growthfully Developed in 2022. Good shit overall.
This album feels haunted. Most tracks have that slacker feel and then some weird eerieness that keeps trying to poke through. Also wtf was “Poledo”. I absolutely loved it. It’s like analogue horror meets rock music. These guys truly feel like they were super ahead of their time.
What the fuck happened?? Is this even legit? I was really excited to see that Zay dropped. He’s one of my favourite trap metal artists who certainly had it in him to make a great album. VIP was a great album for him and I was hoping to see him deliver similar material or even expand on those flavours. Instead we have this shoddy, sloppy mess of a tape that obscures everything that makes Zay a competent artist. Outrageously disappointing. I literally thought this was a hacked unofficial ... read more
On Solastalgia, Rafael does what he does best: crafting beautifully intense and dark soundscapes. His ambient work often thrives off its tragic sound, consistently using long and winding crescendos for tracks to build upon themselves. It's a formula that can get gradually get a little uninteresting, mostly when doing a full listen, but individual tracks mostly carry their own significance. I appreciate that there is a decent bit of variation on this album. I compare this project to A ... read more
This is kind of a weird one. There are some cool moments, but overall it feels sort of all over the place and weirdly sequenced. The soundscapes are alright, shining on tracks like "Poa Alpina", "Kobresia", and "Silene", but others sorta fade in and out. It's enigmatic tones aren't as captivating as I thought they'd be either. Sound collaging can be done phenomenally, like on an album such as Chill Out by The KLF or Radio Amor, but here it just feels ... read more
Slop.
The success of To Pimp a Butterfly raised the standards for conscious rappers of the 2010s, and suddenly everybody thought they had to make the next TPAB. In my opinion, it's no masterpiece like the masses claim it to be, but it's great. It did however birth a lot of copycats.
Kemba was the star of "Daemons", the track off XXXTENTACION's posthumous Bad Vibes Forever, laying a feature truly riveting that has made me intrigued in the guy since I first heard it. At ... read more
Ahhh the classic "this is a mixtape so I can do whatever I want" nonsense. Is East not trying? That's not really it. I mean it's not pure slop, but it's seriously hard for a release like this to sit right with me.
After a whatever intro and actually the quite solid "GAME 6", East nabs the beat from Common's "The People" and Gang Starr's "Royalty", two of arguably the best beats of all time. On the former, he does this abhorrent ... read more
