Quadeca - FORGONE
95

Thank you quadrilateral for once again blowing my socks off. Quad has said that every song on Vanisher carries its own weight and identity, feeling like an entirely unique experience from track to track. From the three singles we've gotten, that is evident, and with a powerhouse like this there's no telling what the rest of the album holds. The only thing I do know is that I'm going to be in shambles at the end of my listen.

Dex Arson - Beast Mode
80

The vocal chop on the breakdown is actually injected with crack. Strong contender for Dex Arson's best song.

Fleetwood Mac - Behind the Mask
65

I sort of have a soft spot for the late career 90s releases from classic rock bands, Behind the Mask included. It's a pretty sweet sounding album with some clear hiccups. The album's biggest issue is its redundancies. Maybe the only thing Fleetwood Mac had to prove at this point was that they could make a decent album without Lindsey, and they sorta did. It doesn't help that half the album doesn't even feel like Fleetwood Mac, but at large it is the unambitious and really ... read more

Vangelis - Heaven & Hell
80

Some of Vangelis' most impressive orchestration lands on this album. Heaven & Hell is held in very high regard in the Vangelis discography and for good reason. Across the two part mega-composition, Vangelis establishes a substantial array of moods and instrumentation to ultimately form a very layered, lush, and striking listen. In one passage, the album will sooth you with its reserved vocals, synth pads, and electric pianos while in another it'll blast you with pronounced synth ... read more

billy woods - GOLLIWOG
65

I don't really like Billy Woods but far beyond any of his releases, this album has really piqued my interest. From the public reception to the dark, horrific tones of this album, I was inclined to give it a listen hoping for a better experience than my previous with woods. This album is seriously heavy through both its subject matter and intense production. Many of these tracks carry a rivetingly menacing soundscape that heighten the album's emotional potency. While I can comfortably ... read more

Jasiah - War
75

So much fun. War is a dope, enthusiastic, and genuinely creative trap metal project that deserves more attention in its sphere. From its hard hitting drums to the simple but effective sampling to Jasiah's cutthroat energy (+features), this album delivers as intended. Highlights like "Break Shit", "Surfs Up", and "Crisis" are infectious as hell. "In N Out" and the batshit "Unintelligible" are also great, but don't get it twisted, the ... read more

Kid Cudi - Neverland
65

Kid Cudi is my favourite artist of all time so new music and particularly new musical directions are always welcome for me. I enjoyed this song, I think this lane of sound has the potential for some serious earworms, but to a degree it still sounds cheap. That’s pretty much all in the production though, which is something Cudi has to stop and pay a little more attention to. His beat selection nowadays is mostly inconsistent, and the generic trap-pop sound of the beat is just too patchy ... read more

Nas & Damian Marley - Distant Relatives
70

Distant relatives, oddly, is definitely a *good* album. The album executes its sound well in a number of instances, but it still does have one very clear flaw. It feels like every other track, one of this duo plays comfortably in their home turf while the other sort of trickles behind. As a result, the album is a lot less seamless than it wants to be. However, even in its stylistic hiccups, Distant Relatives is able to deliver a decent set of tracks, some of which are absolutely worth ... read more

Nas - The Lost Tapes 2
50

In practice, it's not as shoddy as Nastradamus, but it may be less appealing overall. This is without a doubt one of the weakest Nas releases if not his worst. On The Lost Tapes 2, the far inferior sequel, Nas raps in pieces over some pretty thin production. Nas has always been a conceptual guy, and one that portrays life very well in his music, but in their "lost" or previously unreleased nature, these songs fail to capture the hood narrative to the riveting degree that previous ... read more

Malcolm Todd - Malcolm Todd
80

Thank you REPO guy.

Seriously though, this is up there with my favourites of the year, so I'm really glad "I LOOOOOOOVE I LOOOOOHOOOOVE" piqued my interest enough. It's a really sweet, sincere, talentful singer-songwriter project. Todd confidently and comfortably produces a really seamless, refined sound. One studio album in and he's nailed a sound that sounds great and allows him a little bit of variation here and there. It's just some great, honest romantic pop ... read more

Radiohead - In Rainbows
75

Once again I fail to see the hype in one of Radiohead's most beloved works. In Rainbows is as times lush, and quite sweet sounding, feeling more consistent than Kid A, another album by them that feels overhyped to me. I don't know though I'm just now blown away. Maybe I need another listen but this really just felt like a nice, refined, focused piece of art rock to sit back to. It cuts deep at times but nothing as poignant as OKC or The Bends. The instrumental arrays here are ... read more

Quadeca - MONDAY
90

Look at Quadeca man so inspirational

Mario Judah - Never Again
70

Definitely worse than "Love You Anymore" but still pretty catchy and clean-sounding. I really hope Judah expands on this sound because this emo trap wave he's been on recently is genuinely pretty original, and with a bit more variation an album or even an EP of this sort of stuff would make me a very happy lad.

Alessia Cara - The Pains of Growing
70

One thing's for certain, Alessia Cara is NOT an albums artist, but that's okay. Alessia Cara is not the type of artist I would typically take the time to listen to album by album, but there's something beyond the popiness of her music that sorta makes it worthwhile. This album isn't super consistent, and scattered across the track list are tacky sounding radio-tuned songs like "I Don't Want To", "Wherever I Live", "A Little More", and ... read more

mynameisntjmack - BOOKMARK 2
75

This is a sweet underground rap gem. I haven't heard of this guy today, and this album was short so I figured I'd give it a spin. Really I have nothing bad to say about it. It's chill, the production is consistent and refined, and jmack brings personality to every track to back some pretty decent lyricism. And that's just it. Every aspect of this album is just solid. Tracks don't overstay their welcome and even the couple features add a decent bit, "chase" ... read more

The Thermals - The Body, The Blood, The Machine
80

On another addition of great music Skate 3 introduced me to...

I love what this album is and does and how it feels. Theatrically, this album is like anti-everything. It's free and extremely sincere to itself, providing a pure, serene, exciting experience. The loud serenity of it even makes me emotional in the album's best moments like on "Back to the Sea" and the AMAZING hit, "A Pillar of Salt". Instrumentally it's simple but catchy, and lyrically its ... read more

yeule - Evangelic Girl is a Gun
95

Between this and Vanisher I’m gonna have a real tough time deciding on my album of the year.

Ken Carson - More Chaos
50

Major step down from AGC. Ken hones in on a particular style, the type you hear on the second half of "Fighting My Demons". It works occasionally but is pretty inconsistent and often annoyingly abrasive. I think I genuinely got a headache by the end of this thing. There's a decent set of tracks here, like I enjoyed a good 9 of the songs here, some of which were playlist worthy, but this is without a doubt the worst album Ken has put out. More than half the time Ken doesn't ... read more

Nas - Untitled
70

Talk about underrated. I was waiting for this album to get bad and well, it just didn't. "Testify" was a pretty stale, "Project Roach" is just too short to garner much worth, and "We're Not Alone" isn't great, but I enjoyed the rest. Contrary to what a lot of people seem to believe about this album, I think the production is pretty solid. It's great on songs like "You Can't Stop Us Now", "Breathe", "Untitled", ... read more
