"I had bad chicks that blow cum bubbles like bubblegum" will maybe go down as Nas' worst opening bar for any song in his career, and funnily enough it's on one of the best songs on this album.
A lot of artists at some point in their career, usually after they've made their biggest slam, decide they want to release an album that's way too long. Nas has some relatively long albums but none with this length. Thing is, Nas isn't really the type of artist to ... read more
It's about as much of a studio album as For LP Fans Only, which is to say it isn't really one, being a collection of leftovers thrown together just to keep the fans happy. It does *feel* exactly as it was constructed, but oddly it's one of the more endearing Elvis albums, and for its benefit, is quite stripped back at times. Tracks like "Your Cheatin' Heart", "Tomorrow Night", "Memphis Tennessee", and "For the Millionth and the Last ... read more
A delighteful, endearing pop rock album of the late 60s. This album has no good reason to be musically audacious and it's perfect that way. The romance seeps from this album with so much sincerity. It's just a super comforting, feel-good experience that, for a change, lets me look upon romance through a joyous lens. On one hand, it doesn't take itself too seriously, on the other, it strives to be exactly what it needs to be to deliver a good time, and that it does.
There's a wide range of classic rock flavours that The Lemon Twigs have proved they can pull off, but not all of them... This is definitely their spottiest release I've heard yet. The theatrecore undertone, which in some cases is less of an undertone and can really overpower a track (occasionally to nauseating degrees, see "Rock Dreams"), one of the prime qualities that hamper's this albums ability to build consistency. What this album emulates is one of the least ... read more
This vs. Fear Fun is like atom bomb vs. crying baby. I want to and might give this the in depth review that it deserves as I give this more listens but I'll just brief some thoughts. This was literally amazing, I'm so blown away. The attitude, charming cynicism, gorgeous vocals, insane instrumental layering, grandness, sequencing, structure, conceptual depth, introspection, everything about this is peak as fuck. Josh really cut all the bullshit for this album and the result is one of ... read more
The early 2000s were an interesting time for Wu. Iron Flag was an awesome album and served as a bit of redemption from The W, but all members in their own lane adapted to the new millennium with varying success. RZA surprised us with his best solo release with Birth of a Prince, Ghost dropped a few great albums, Rae's credibility as a solo artist was slipping away, and Deck dropped his severely underrated The Movement. GZA was always a bit enigmatic and didn't have as much activity in ... read more
Still my favourite late Stones era song. It's a little rugged, but the hook is so infectious, Mick sounds as lively as ever, as does the instrumentation. God I actually can't get enough of the hook on this song its SO DAMN GOOD. Steel Wheels deserves more credit, and this song is absolutely the forefront of that album.
This album absolutely earns its long runtime. It's been at least three years since I first listened to Mecca and the Soul Brother so I'm due for a relisten, but from what I remember, this album slightly takes the edge. Some of Pete Rock's best production lands on this album and cements his status as one of the best hip-hop producers of all time. It's pristine boom bap with amazing sampling and wonderful performances from smooth. The best stuff on here could go on a playlist ... read more
I'm due to finally give a Viper album a full listen. I first heard him at least a few years ago, a time where I hated this kind of music and thought cloud rap was jarring nonsense. Now while Vipe still isn't totally my cup of tea, I'm much more open to this and can appreciate it. Viper isn't a talented vocalist, and the weirdness of it is sometimes a turn off, but the production? Well he's self-produced and the instrumentals speak for themselves. The reverse style ... read more
Grand, noisy, and eager, Be Here Now is a great followup to an amazing sophomore album. This album's loud, like unapologetically loud, and I love it for that. Some of Oasis' most powerful and energetic songs land on this album, with some of the highest quality too. It's not really as refined as the previous album, but it certainly has a 'go big or go home' mentality to it—the public seems to be mixed on whether or not they went home... Anyways, there's a ton ... read more
This is genuinely so good. Thaiboy is once again super consistent, enthusiastic, and fun over awesome production. It's a bit more modern and less out there than Legendary Member, also a bit less consistent, but it's great regardless. The tracks I didn't feel were totally playlist-worthy such as "Dreamworld", "Back 2 Life", and "Never Change" were still fine. But the higlights? Oh man they're good. This album packs some serious gems, namely ... read more
Basically exactly the same as his last trap album, Hommage is pretty bland. I can respect the work ethic, but with how much material Boldy is throwing together, it's not always very good and that's very much the case for this one, feeling uninspired and extremely lacklustre. Now that's not to say it sounds *bad* but there is little of value on this project. Most songs were okay but just came and went. While Boldy plays in his home field with a detroit-influenced sound, he still ... read more
(Rating bonus only) Deluxe tracks are cool, "2024" on streaming is sick. It's in my opinion Carti's best song of this new era. The infectious production and flows make it so damn replayable. Not a huge fan of "Different Day" but the other three are great.
It's because of albums like this that 2025 is going to go down as one of the best years for music in the past like 15 years. I was HIGHLY anticipating this album. Backxwash's previous two albums were dark, cutthroat, and emotionally heavy. We get that here too but Backxwash takes a creative turn left, exploring new sounds, production, all while harbouring the same enthusiasm and conceptual content that makes her music so special.
This album is seriously emotional and in your face ... read more
Stellar.
Thaiboy's ability to go nearly full octane on fun as hell beats with a consistently infectious flow and cadence is leading me to put him at the top of DG. He's killer on this entire album, as is the production and the features, who feel as happy to be on this album as Thaiboy does, especially Ecco's multiple great performances. Highlights: All except maybe "Spinnin". This is so good.
One user compared this project to Bladee's "Good Luck", which I think is a pretty accurate comparison with it's haphazard nature and particularly it's very electronically tuned production. I think this slightly has the edge on that project, carrying a bit less tack and having greater peaks. I mean, it's only 12 minutes but it was definitely more digestible, even if patchy at times. "Magic" wasn't it for me and just felt really off. I love "Top ... read more
Is it more of the same? Yes. is that a problem? No. Blind is a step down from the original, with a few tracks not quite capturing the sparkle of The Sunday's best work, and you can't credit it to bringing notably new ideas to the table, but it's a damn fine listen regardless, and sounds even better on a relisten. More of the same also didn't mean that it felt "samey" as Blind still brought new experiences to the table in the same lane of sound. There are a fair bit ... read more
For some reason Apple Music notified me of this drop and Rx Papi has been an interesting artist for me in the past so I figured I'd check this out. Well, it's not good. More than half the tracks are just bad with a handful of redeeming highlights, but cut this 53 minute album down to 25 and you've got a solid project. The lowlights range from poor mixing to shitty vocals to very dull production and a generally uninspired tone. Highlights like "Whatever You Heard Its ... read more
Pretty wishy-washy on this one. In it's vocal performances, I'm not really sure what point this album and many of its songs try to make, maybe I'm just stupid, but it often comes off as tryhard hooey. So really, this album doesn't do much for me lyrically/vocally. That's not to undermine what it achieves in its instrumentation though. It's not totally consistent, but it's admirably unique and has a number of alluring moments. From the glitchy tones of ... read more
