Like all of the albums in the mass appeal classic hip-hop run, I was super excited for this project, especially since "Define My Name", the really great single that dropped last year, giving us a taste of what we could have with an album by the two. Nas and Preemo have history of synergy, going back to the phenomenal "NY State of Mind", "Memory Lane", and "Represent" from Illmatic. However, if you've heard anything Dj Premier has released in recent ... read more
In my semi-recent grown obsession with ambient music, I've had the pleasure of discovering that this genre is far more innovative than it may seem at face value. From the mind-blowing beauty of Old Saw's Country Tropics (and succeeding albums), combining ambient with Americana, and now this album, an interstellar jazzy infusion, the creative boundaries of ambient music lie much further apart than I initialy believed. That's not to say that it's a 'simple' genre but ... read more
I really wanted to enjoy this one more, but I came out of it just kinda questioning the whole project. In its experimental quirks and genre blending, this album consistently just loses the plot. It’s foggy, definitely intentionally so. but there are mix choices that just don’t make sense to me, even from an innovators POV. More than that, it feels like every track spins a randomizer for what exaggerated effects and plugins its going to include. Things just feel really messy to me. ... read more
The interesting thing about this album is that, among SosMula’s releases, it seems like its appealing to the musicheads the most (relative to his other albums) while for avid fans it’s much less solid. Unfortunately Sleez often got undermined by casual fan as the worse half of city morgue. People didn’t really like his voice on the city morgue stuff, so when he went solo and did his usual thing, it turned a lot of people off. In my opinion, Sos holds up to Zilla performance ... read more
I’ve been an avid fan of bbno$ since 2017 so I have a lot of love for what he does and the much-deserved attention he’s managed to garner, especially recently. If you came into a first listen of this album expecting anything different, than you were sorely mistaken. However I think most people got the picture since this album had an astronomical 9 (I think) lead singles. It’s superficial, yes, but the reality is that bbno$ put a ton of work into this album in every facet of, ... read more
Despite being of little to no lyrical substance and mostly having mediocre production, this mixtape is actually kind of enjoyable. Kodak is not a talented vocalist but he knows how to set a vibe. He falls flat a noticeable amount of times, making songs like "Big Bank" and "Purp" pretty valueless, but backed by decent production, his own energy and honestly decent flows are highlights such as "Vigin In This Bih" with a dope Gucci verse, "Gave It All I ... read more
Genuinely fantastic. Chaeyoung has always been my favourite of Twice, and Twice has always been my favourite in k-pop, so to see a solo debut from my favourite member come with this level of substance is an absolute treat. LIL FANTASY vol.1 is short and sweet yes, but it packs a ton to offer. This debut is an artist's creative expansion at its finest. The dynamic tones like the bedroom influences and upbeat bangers like "RIBBONS" and "SHADOW PUPPETS" blend more ... read more
If you hate this you are entirely entitled to do so. There's a category of rap that blatantly draw from their very popular samples, something that Gravy has a history of doing. I've always viewed these as harmless and completely not ill-intended songs, even if at times they are sort of baity. Songs like this one along with Gravy's "Mr. Clean", "Gravy Train", "Cheryl", or something like Coi Leray's "My Body", encompass it entirely. On ... read more
JME has finally blessed us with some music on streaming. This recent batch of singles has been promoted mostly through youtube, outside of streaming, but they're pretty damn good. If there's one thing JME has been able to do, it's adapt and progress his signature sound while sounding as comfortable as ever. Songs like this, "On Top", "________", and "TMNT" are all super slick, fun, and hard new era JME bangers. Absolutely check these songs out if you ... read more
Raekwon proved with The Wild that he can still release a quality album in his late years. He has arguably aged the best artistically, his voice still sounding pristine and his flows/pengame almost never regressing. With mostly consistent beat selection, solid features, cool skits, and a good runtime, Rae once again has put out dope material. "Debra Night Wine" was probably the worst thing here, and "The Omerta" with Nas was pretty disappointing, but otherwise everything here ... read more
For my 2000th rating, I figured I'd do something special, knocking off an album that is nearly mandatory in order to call yourself musically cultured. As a fan of music and Coltrane in particular, it's almost sacrilegious that I haven't listened to this album yet. My initial plan with Coltrane was to listen to a few 'runner up' albums before checking out his big masterpiece as sort of a buildup, but it took me way longer than it should've to finally check A Love ... read more
Man this album sounds so fresh. The production and vibes across this album are not only unique but super captivating. The bass music influences are top notch and the spacy-hyper feel to the whole thing lets it capitalise on a pretty wide array of flavours. I'm not familiar with the members but they seem to all do their thing, ultimately making a really cohesive album. "Satellite", "Stylish", and "favOriTe" blew me away, but pretty much every song on here is ... read more
This sounded like a pretty passable return to form Gravy song until 30 seconds hit. What are we doing Gravy...
Gang Starr's final album with Guru alive is far from shabby. Many 90s legends fail to demonstrate the longevity and consistency that Guru has had, and even though this album sort of marked a creative end for the duo, they still sound as sharp as they did in the 90s. Preemo's prime production era during the late 90s arguably carried over into the early 2000s, leading pretty much all the production on this album to be quality. It's not as lush and overall great as it was on Moment ... read more
