I like the introspective, high-concept register of Sinatra better (a la "In the Wee Small Hours"). but this is nice too. feels like i'm sitting in my grandma's living room. or watching a scorsese movie montage. both great vibes
an arrival; I've been listening to a lot of old time "hillbilly music," so I have a better grasp of what a shock to the system this was. Impactful today like the cultural memory of Elvis has always suggested. Also simultaneously a series of covers that have (mostly) been done better by others.
a little thrown off by the studio artifice (I was expecting a true live album). solid renditions of some Duke Ellington classics. the last few tracks (comprising the "suite") are fine. bonus points for the famous gonsalves solo, of course.
