A delicious stew of Prog, Jazz, Post Punk, Post Rock and Poetry. Just the right blend of angular discordance and angelic harmony. Songs can turn on a sixpence. The production is just beautiful too. Very few highly hyped albums live up to the bluster that proceeds them, this one certainly does.
Whilst this is still a good album, it does not live up to the full potential of the earlier EP’s, in my view. It lacks the dark melancholy in favour of a more optimistic bounce. For me ‘Cola’ was something near perfect that I hope Arlo reaches again on her next release.
A hybrid of Art Pop, Glam Rock and Funky Disco this is a fascinating album with plenty to grab your attention. A back line of strings, horns, vibes, keys etc, are airy, well defined and do not fight for attention. Juliana Giraffe has the kind of voice that allows to build several characters or personalities into her work, resulting in a very theatrical style to help portray the narrative. Hints of Bowie, Roxy Music and T Rex are present here, meaning Midnight Sister are not afraid of looking ... read more
New artist of the year for me. Such a distinctive voice and so effective with the melancholic introspection. Made even more outstanding as Arlo is so young. Whilst not perhaps as consistent as the first EP, still a stunning release.
This EP sounds completely timeless to me. Full of vocal hooks. The lyrics are great, really heart felt without being syrupy. Sometimes sounding like the Breeders but to say this alone would be a disservice. There is a maturity in the way the songs are constructed. The production is great, expansive, the layers of strings for example give a real lift. Time signature also seem to chop and change, you never know what’s around the corner. It was the Pitchfork review that steered me towards ... read more
An amazing compilation of bands I’ve never heard of playing, well what it says on the tin. Gels together so well. Very out there, sometimes motorik. Very pleased with this. My album of the week!
Wishy washy twaddle
Beck should have quit before making these last two monstrosities
I love the aural and visual imagery here, but is it just me, the production is horrible! This really surprises me as David Holmes is at the controls? Everything is dripping in reverb and echo, but not in a good way. The aural equivalent of a strobe bringing on an epileptic fit, a stodgy bowl of impenetrable soup, just wrong!?
Essential listening! So many hooks. That voice, absolutely mesmerising. Perfectly penned. An obvious music fan as well as maker. Almost Bacharach in places, high praise indeed!
More a punk funk and electro clash than world music, I really love this. Funky grooves all over the place. Tight musicianship and exquisite vocals. I was fortunate enough to catch these live this year, what a danceathon!
A succinct album full of incantations and spells that will grasp your attention and not let you go. This is fantastically engineered sometimes taking unexpected twists and turns to euphoric levels. It reminds me in parts of Bjork’s Debut, The Beloved, but sometimes stretches right back to Kraftwerk. I have not been drawn to any of Jenny’s work previously but this I have come back to many times. Possibly my AOTY!
Ok, to get it out there, I’m a complete On-U Sound/Adrian Sherwood nut, so I want to love this. Hands up, Lee Perry was a genius on the desk, what he achieved with so few tracks back in those Black Ark days is nothing short of astounding. Look no further than The Congos ‘Heart of the Congo’s’ for confirmation there. On the mike however things can become pretty tiresome. Here though we have a legend on what must be his last lap, rhyming off the dome, as mad as a hatter, ... read more
Quite a nice little Easter egg for Amazon users. However this is a rough and ready ‘live in the studio’ Which your not gonna visit many times. It’s there when you want it. No need to rush!
Intricately crafted as individual tracks. This album sounds lushest when real instrument such as cellos have been used then treated afterwards. At its strongest this album is uplifting and beat driven. I have held back on the score though as all attention has been made on individual tracks but a coherent listening experience as a album this is not!
Beautiful atmospheric acoustic/electric soundscapes with beats. Two virtuoso players blending different styles to come up with a great album
