An absolutely fantastic album, and one of the rare cases where a longer runtime feels completely justified. Each track has its own distinct character, from the melancholic sombreness of Heart Cooks Brain and Trailer Trash to the explosive crescendos of Teeth Like God’s Shoeshine and Cowboy Dan. Really just a stunningly beautiful album. The instrumentals are incredibly warm and lush such as on Suzanne or one of us cannot be wrong but are also incredibly creative and dynamic such as on teachers or the strangers song. And cohens lyrics are phenomenal; probably the greatest songwriter ever in terms of just the raw beauty and poetry in his writing. Overall just a really well written and thought provoking album; a masterpiece
A solid noise rock record, but not one that leaves a huge impression. Lady Elect is the clear standout, with some of Unwound’s best lyrics and a memorable crushing riff. However, the rest of the songs often don’t always build into anything particularly memorable. It’s consistently good and a captivating listen in parts, though it can drag a little over the course of the album.
Love the blending of genres. Unwound take everything they were doing previously and mix it with elements of indie and post rock. And for such a previously heavy band they produce some really intricately beautiful tracks such as Demons sing love songs and One Lick Less. And the post hardcore and noise rock songs still hold up with the rest of their catalogue. This album has a sort of real heaviness to it without having to be overly loud. Fantastic album, Terminus is a masterpiece as well
This album only gets its accolades for being a NWOBHM staple and a heavy influence on Metallica. But the riffs are relatively average, the lyrics are abysmal, and the songs drag on for far too long. Save from the actually quite great Am I Evil and the decent opener, this album is a heavy miss.
