Swans - Holy Money
80

This is Greed if it was good. It's more interesting and it has more variety in its sound.

I don't see how A Hanging is the highest rated track. It's one of the weakest for me. You Need Me is nice, but it's too short to really do anything. It's a very primitive Jarboe track; all of her songs on Children of God, the following album, are much better. Fool (# 2) is Fool but with drums. Is it better? I'm not sure, but I'd say slightly so, as it's less boring. ... read more

Swans - Time Is Money (Bastard)

The title track is a banger. Sadly, Sealed in Skin is not that good.

Best: Time Is Money (Bastard)

Least favorite: Sealed in Skin (6.5/10)

Swans - Greed

Is this what no-wave era Swans sounds like to people who don't like Swans? This is underhated. It's much, much worse than Cop. It's unbelievably boring. Far too minimalist, nothing actually happens in the songs; it's the same thing throughout. The beats and instrumentals are not nearly interesting enough for them to go on for four, five, or even six minutes. Fool and Money Is Flesh are the only two songs actually worth listening to here, but the funny thing is that they both ... read more

Swans - Young God
72

I mean, it's good, sure, but I feel like it doesn't have the highs that Cop has. It's good that it's shorter, though. Raping a Slave is probably the best song of the four. Young God is also the most brutal song I've ever listened to. It almost sounds like a torture tape.

Best: Raping a Slave

Least favorite: Young God (7/10)

Swans - Cop

I'm not sure how many Swans albums I've listened to before this; I lost count. I get the critique that it's too long; I also think it's a bit of a problem, considering the songs are quite repetitive (not as much as their following record, Greed, at least). Some people think the songs on Filth are almost indistinguishable. I heavily disagree with that take. However, I think it applies here. I won't listen to most of the songs here outside of the gym; they make good gym ... read more

Swans - Filth

This was the sixth Swans album I listened to, I think. I was at the gym and I thought: "Hey, I've heard this album is heavy, and I want to listen to some new music". So I put it on my earphones. Stay Here starts; I don't know if the metal pipes I'm hearing are coming from my earbuds or from someone at the gym; I stop the song, and I hear no pipes. That was the moment I understood I was in for a wild ride. It was even clearer when I heard Michael Gira shouting at me: ... read more

Swans - The Glowing Man
100

What the hell man.

I have never given such consistently perfect scores to tracks on an album before. All the songs here are 10/10, apart from maybe People Like Us, but even then, it's more of a 9.75. This was the fifth Swans album I listened to, seventh if we count solo projects Drainland and How I Loved You, and I must say it's my favorite one. The singular tracks are so long I don't even know how to talk about them. Cloud of Forgetting is one of the best openers of all time; ... read more

Swans - White Light from the Mouth of Infinity
95

This was my fourth Swans album I listened to, the other three being, in order, To Be Kind, Soundtracks for the Blind, and The Great Annihilator. I think this is very similar to the latter due to a variety of reasons. They both have a very distinct sound throughout the album, meaning that the tracks are all quite similar to one another, so much so that it was only after multiple listens that I was able to remember how a specific one sounded compared to the rest (I had the same problem with The ... read more

Kate Bush - Hounds of Love
95

Right after having listened to Daughters' You Won't Get What You Want and being left rather disappointed, I wanted to listen to something more joyful, and what better way to do that than to listen to my first Kate Bush album? I obviously knew Running Up That Hill already and loved it, and I'm also quite a big fan of art pop, so I thought: why not?

I was very pleasantly surprised. First of all, I didn't know the album was split into two "sections", Hounds of Love ... read more

Daughters - You Won't Get What You Want

How did Fantano give this a 10? It's really nothing special. Maybe I don't get it, I don't know, but I'm quite convinced most people rated this as high as they did only because of him. I've also seen many people overreact regarding how heavy this album is: it's heavy, sure, but that's it.

Some songs such as City Song and Guest House are actually quite heavy. However, the former especially has a big problem: even though it's one of the most musically ... read more

It's great, but not as good as Exmilitary. I genuinely believe most people who say this is their favorite Death Grips album just mindlessly follow what Anthony Fantano says and can't create a personal opinion. This is not even in their top three in my opinion.

I'm not a big fan of Get Got. The sampling is great, sure, but the mixing is a bit too muffled and I don't think the track fits that well with the rest of the album. It's their most lukewarm and accessible opener ... read more

Death Grips - Exmilitary

I gotta say, I'm not usually in the mood to listen to Death Grips as much as I was a few years ago, but this is still fantastic. The sampling is crazy.

The opening track, Beware, is one of their best songs. It has some of the best lyricism in their entire discography; I'm wary of saying it's the best because On GP exists. Guillotine is my least favorite track on the album, mainly because I feel like it doesn't fit that well with the rest, but it's still great. Other ... read more

Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Brain Salad Surgery

I didn't like it at all.

I'm not sure what I was expecting, I know people are very much divided on whether or not they think ELP is good, and I must say I'm not on their fans' side. I detest the instrumentals: I can't stop but feel like this just a bunch of random sounds mashed together to try and create "the most progressive song possible" but to me it only comes off as a pretentious exercise. I've listened to prog rock albums with very different songs, ... read more

The Velvet Underground & Nico - The Velvet Underground & Nico

This record is very interesting. I did some research about it so that I could know more context, which was a good idea. By itself, it would have seemed to be a normal art rock album with some punk-ish lyrics, but the particular thing about this is that this album was released in 1967, which means it was pretty much the first of its kind. I really like the presence of both very mellow ballads and noisy, avant-garde songs, I don't think they clash at all but rather they pair very well ... read more

After having listened to not enough albums from Swans, four to be exact (in order: To Be Kind, Soundtracks for the Blind, The Great Annihilator, White Light from the Mouth of Infinity), and also the adjacent work Drainland, I was yearning from something that delved more into the neofolk aspect I found and loved in both White Light and Drainland. They both have a song which very quickly became one of my favorites of all time, Blind; other than that, I really liked the sound of the former, but ... read more

King Crimson - The Power to Believe
60

This was the opposite of a grower. I liked it at first then I started disliking it the more I listened to it.

The Power To Believe Pt.1 is unbelievably bad for a King Crimson's track. It is an interlude but it has no music, just Belew talking with a horrible vocal effect, which is recurring in the other three The Power To Believe interludes. Why were they even added? Level Five is the fifth track in the Larks' Tongues In Aspic pentalogy; I think it's second to last in the ... read more

King Crimson - The ConstruKction of Light
73

I'm an outlier in saying this, but this is not King Crimson's worst album. Maybe it's Stockholm syndrome, given they are one of my favorite bands and I want to like all their stuff, who knows. Though strangely enough, I liked this from first listen. I think this is the most playful they've ever been in an album; Fripp's perfectionism and seriousness probably just malfunctioned while they recorded the seven tracks on here. It's by far their least accessible work, ... read more

King Crimson - THRAK
75

THRAK is the first album of the last King Crimson iteration, which consists in a more metal and industrial oriented sound, developed further in their next two albums, The Construkction Of Light and especially The Power To Believe. With this record the band joins in the trend of putting random intermission tracks in between songs, regrettably so. I can at least appreciate the effort they put into most of these; indeed, many of them are long and varied enough that they act as short, instrumental ... read more

King Crimson - Three of a Perfect Pair

The hate for this album is absolutely unjustified. Not as much as that for Beat, but still very much undeserved. It's not their best record, sure, certainly not their best in the '80s run, but it's nowhere near as bad as many describe it.

The left side of the first four/five tracks is the poppiest they ever sounded, while the right side is the most experimental they sounded among their three 1980s albums, maybe even in all their discography.

Three Of A Perfect Pair is a prog ... read more

King Crimson - In the Wake of Poseidon

I will start by saying that differently from Beat, i understand the critiques about this album. It's very similar to its predecessor; I'm not sure if I'd say it straight up copied it though.

We have the addition of Peace - A Beginning, Peace - A Theme, and Peace - An End, cool short interlude-like tracks which however I don't think add all that much to the album. So then we are left with five tracks, the same number as In The Court Of The Crimson King. Pictures of a City is ... read more

"I respect your opinion, though if I'm in the same mood I'd much rather prefer to Swans. They are different sure but in my opinion they both try to create a similar vibe."
