Can't really explain exactly why, but this just isn't quite as good as the debut. There are some highlights, mainly the title track, but I just didn't enjoy this one as much as their first.
I feel like a lot of people view Physical Graphiti as the last LZ album that's worth a damn, but I kinda disagree. While presence wasn't my favorite, it was definitely worth listening to. THIS is the real fall off for the band. Nothing on here comes close in qaulity to Achilles Last Stand, or honestly most of the tracks from their previous album. Most of this is just boring.
A huge fall off from Physical Graphiti, but still not bad by any means. Achilles Last Stand and Nobody's Fault But Mine are both great, honestly.
Wow, this was great. People seriously need to talk about this band more. Sure, Smoke on the Water is huge, but I never really hear anyone talk about any of their albums besides Machine Head. Made me think the rest of their discography was mediocre, but no, this is some fantastic hard rock.
It's heavy, it's got some fantastic riffs, and it's pretty dark with its lyrics for its time. It's nowhere near my favorite thrash album. A lot of the short tracks in the middle of the record just don't really stand out. Not a huge fan of the vocals, then again, I don't really mind the vocals on Rust in Peace anymore because I've listened to it so much, and they are WAY worse than this. So maybe I'll ease up to them eventually.
I feel like this album is overrated and underrated at the same time. To me, this is Death's least heavy and least interesting album to listen to... but it's also a really big artistic leap for the band. It's more technical and has very different, more socially conscious lyrics that don't go for "shock value" as much as the first 2 albums.
Since I'm into a lot of 70s hard rock (Sabbath, Zeppelin, Deep Purple, etc.) I thought I'd love this, but I don't know, it's just not really clicking with me. Like, it's completely fine, just nothing I really wanna return to.
While undeniably important for establishing the genre, this is not an album I see myself returning to much. It's both musically and lyrically repetitive, and I much prefer Chuck's vocals from the later albums.
That super long fade out on The Philosopher pisses me off.
Great album though.
Going back to this, you can definitely tell she evolved a lot as an artist on GUTS.
Saw that her new album was coming out and decided to give "The Cure" a listen, and it was WAY better than I expected. So now I decided to check out this album, and it's pretty good. Does it feel commercial and manufactured? Yeah. And I HATE it when pop-singers talk in the middle of songs to try to sound authentic and quirky, it always makes me cringe. But all that aside, this is some qaulity Pop Rock. All American Bitch is my favorite.
