Inexplicably good. Phil Elverum's finest work- it is incredibly rough and scratched, but its lo-fi feelings are what make this so impressive. The album is very personal–with many of its tracks being about Phil–and it has perfect lyrics to accompany the exquisite sounds. This album is one of the greatest gifts we've had in the 21st century.
In my opinion, this is Dumile's greatest project. The collaboration between DOOM and Madlib stays strong with this release: incredible production with the same incredible lyrical ingenuity from DOOM. This record is easily the greatest hip-hop album of the '00s and definitely in the top 10 of all time for that genre. Truly a work of art.
Pretty cool that a compilation record can be so much better than really anything they released later.
Really enjoyed this release from Death Grips. It's not as dear to me as The Money Store, but there are some really great tracks. You see some lyrical innovation from Stefan that we haven't seen in a couple years. Death Grips continues to use their awesome experimentation to produce awesome music. Andy, Zach, and Stefan continue to impress.
4 beautiful and hearty tracks that last for a good length. I recommend that you sit down and listen to this record, unbothered by anything, in its entirety because the atmosphere it creates is so dense that you can't be distracted. Arguably GY!BE's greatest release, LYSFLATH is essentially something more than music. There is no other band that can produce quite the sound of the amazing GY!BE.
Precedent for all emo/indie rock. Incredible first LP by SDRE, and one of the best records of the 90s.
Blaise Bailey Finnegan III: (pause) "Well... I don't like the way the country's ran, don't you know, and, erm... that's pretty much what i was expressing in my poem. The government... the American government - they're sneaky, they're very deceitful, they're liars, they're cheats, they're rip-offs. I mean, the American government is one systematic government that...that nobody can trust. I don't trust them myself!"
These two songs are incredibly impactful on the listener. It's one of ... read more
Speedin' is an uncomfortably internal album that's a pleasurable listen. It's is ultimately messy, challenging, and rough around the edges (perhaps more so than anything Scott has ever released), but there’s also something about it that’s admirably unique. He's a maverick, no doubt, but he's also just earned himself his own wing in the Hall of Albums Best Left to Hardcore Fans. The album seems made by someone unable to find the lightning in a bottle that was so impressive and ... read more
One of my favorite hip-hop records. GZA really goes hard in almost every track. Arguably the best solo album that a Wu-Tang member released. Smooth flows, good beats.
One of my favorite records of all time, and arguably the best sounding indie rock album ever created. The Dismemberment Plan's third release has so much to offer. There is so much emotion in some tracks, and other tracks are just catchy, feel-good tracks. Emergency & I is simply the perfect indie record, setting a precedent for all other indie rockers to follow.
it sucks.. just when you have so much hope for a band they release this shit that just completely makes you want to kill yourself
There's a lot of ambience on Deerhunter's second LP, Cryptograms. Ambience aside, there are a lot of short little indie jams that give a hint of what's in store of the quartet. It's hard to appreciate this album as much as works like Halcyon Digest and Microcastle, but Cryptograms is actually quite an impressive release.
Initially, not impressed. I gave it a second chance, though, and I was really captivated by this record. You definitely have to put it into perspective: this album was nothing like anything else at the time. It's even more moving knowing what's in store for Curtis' life. The emotion captured in this record is truly amazing. Awesome album.
Essential Arcade Fire. There is so much emotion evoked in every single line of every single song. The Butlers & company created, in my opinion, the single best record since 2000. Every single sound is captured effectively and adequately- whether it be the violins, piano, or intrinsic guitar riffs. Arcade Fire set a precedent for indie rock with this release- to capture so much emotion in just 10 songs.
It's punchy, it's hard, it's angry. Deerhunter's first release is different than any other release they would later have. The lo-fi, garage-y sound that Deerhunter generates makes for a certainly impressive debut LP.
Really interesting release by The Band at a time in musical history that was so dominated by psychedelia. This album brings definition to folk rock that was never heard of before (until Simon & Garfunkel would later come). Really impressive record, though.
