The first 3 songs on this album are brilliant, even though Varg wasn't the most gifted guitarist he definitely had a great ear, the guitar tone is perfect for black metal and the vocals are good even if they sound like they were recorded by a toaster—But for some reason our beloved and not at all controversial composer decides to make the second half of the record ambient nonsense. It’s difficult to approach Transilvanian Hunger without some degree of reverence—or at least caution. The cover is iconic, the name is constantly invoked as one of the defining artifacts of second wave black metal, and the myth surrounding it is almost as influential as the music itself.
