Darkness and Hope got me somewhat interested in Moonspell, but ultimately for the wrong reasons. Heartstopping-beautiful keyboard-drowned tracks like "How We Became Fire" are a faultless interpretation of Type O Negative in their gentlest moments. That's the issue. I Forced a Bot to Listen to Over 1,000 Hours of Sisters of Mercy and then Asked it to Write an Album of Its Own. Here is the Result.
Merciful Nuns is another project of German musician Artaud Seth, and while his previous work with Garden of Delight had that Andrew-Eldritch-impersonator vibe, nothing I heard from G.O.D. quite reached the level of this album. Lib.I might be constructed entirely of chopped and shuffled bits of pre-Floodland Sisters tunes and lyrics. Or I entered an alternate ... read more
Steeleye Span's hit album All Around My Hat ditched the ominous fragments from its predecessor for a 1970s pop/rock party - bright and usually laidback.

Rather than Steeleye Span's typical UK/Ireland fare, it is a translation of a Scandinavian ballad about the Erl-King/Elf-King's daughter. In topic, ... read more
Nothing in this world could excuse "Jolene." Besides the fact that Dolly has written hundreds of amazing songs which makes it lazy for people to keep covering this particular one ad nauseam, the Cher-ca.-1998 autotune makes this take purely villainous. The singer actually has quite a nice voice when she is not using inadvisable effects, making the rest of the EP okay if forgettable.
Snakekiller by German gothic rock band Love Like Blood delivers exactly what one would expect. Released in the late 1990s but consciously sounding at least a decade older, simulating falling into a drugged sleep in a humid black cave. A diabolic energy lurks in the depths, many of the songs move at a driven tempo with a heavy guitar pulse pushing against the soporific shell. In this sense the album is perfectly rendered and pleasant to listen to, one to keep in mind for when you wish to bring ... read more
