So ahead of its time, which is why every track sounds fantastic to this day
This is my favorite Ween album, probably in my top 10 albums of all time. Every song is great and weird, I love the themes about mental health and the variety among the tracks here. The only questionable moment is Fucked Jam, but it still somehow works, adding a sort of manic feeling. Great album.
I'm changing my original review from a perfect score because I do think this album tends to sidetrack at times, but it's still fantastic.
I for a while succumbed to the pretentious opinion that this album was overrated and infinitely worse than the other big Floyd albums but it's just not. Somehow they manage to fuse jazz seamlessly with space rock and top notch lyrics. They are somewhat vague and impressionistic at times yea, but it's a perfect template for your own portrait. There's really just nothing like it.
My dad introduced me to this album originally years ago, but I think it took me a while to get it. Don't mistake what I'm saying as me not liking the record, I definitely did. However, this album really clicked when I sat down to listen to the whole thing on its own. My dad generally just played Paranoid Android, Karma Police, and No Surprises, all which I enjoyed, but the lyrics flew over my head as somewhat impressionistic and esoteric. LUNACY LUNACY
The first time I listened to this album, I was both confused and mesmerized. Swans have a way of drawing of you into their repetitive post-rock compositional structures where you just get lost into the noise. This album has a dark and unnerving edge which I just LOVE. I actually was introduced to Swans with this record; suffice to say, I got hooked.
Solid Microphones release that certainly paved the way for The Glow, Pt 2, but not quite the same quality, consistency, or solidness of concept.
I really like this album and a lot of ideas and weird experimentation on it. HOWEVER, due to some questionable lyrical and compositional choices, I prefer Blue. That's not to say I have an issue with the weird sexual content presented on this album generally, but moments like "If everyone's a little queer, can't she be a little straight" could've been omitted. Still a great album
I don't think gecs or this album are devoid of any artistic merit (quite the opposite, honestly) but this album is just not for me at all.
Get it, it's the albums name! I'm joking, obviously this debut is phenomenal.
