Eddie Hazel is one of my top guitarists of all time. If you're looking for the album to prove his greatness this here is the one folks.
The more I listen to this album the more I see the necessity in this album having multiple mixes. They feel like two very different projects taking the source material in completely opposing directions. "Dark-Side Mix" is the anxious and tense follow-up to the fantastic "Up". The moods presented are somber and the melodies are urgent. "Bright-Side Mix" feels more in line with the gargantuan sonic achievements of "Us" and "So". The textures are ... read more
I find this album is a lot stronger and fuller thematically when paired with the bonus tracks from the estate sale.
I don't know why this album got worse reception than his previous entries with Hit-Boy. It's absolutely fantastic with Nas flexing his storytelling skills, wordplay and running laps around most of todays' rappers with his supreme flow. I find the Magic albums to be victory laps that let Nas unwind between the intense verbal exercises of the King's Disease installments. Hit-Boy's production on here isn't quite as amazing as the previous Magic installments but its nonetheless cohesive with Nas ... read more
One of the most powerfully executed albums in the genre of conscious rap. Political without being preachy this album balances light hearted humor and unapologetic darkness often back to back. The production is stellar too with The Coup really finding their sound here. If anything this album is more urgent than ever nowadays.
A wonderfully hypnotic album brimming with psychedelics beauty. A good entry point to Jorge Ben if you're a fan of 60s psych rock or 70s soul music as it's inspired by those genres.
Project predicted the sonic direction of rap 10 years in advance while still having its own futuristic unique feel.
"Four Stars To Five: Or How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Embrace Nicki Minaj"
To start off just know I am reviewing the 21 song complete edition. Her albums truly only feel complete when paired with the deluxe tracks. “Pink Friday” is not “Pink Friday” without “Super Bass”. Nicki albums in general need to be digested in their beautifully bloated 1 hour+ deluxe editions, with all their re-ups and truffle buttered pussies. For a while I was ... read more
I actually prefer this running order. It greater emphasizes the spiritual personal and political conflicts at the very core of this album
Six songs, five of which are perfect renditions of Monk originals. Also this little known guy called John Coltrane is on every track other than track three. What else can a jazz fan want?
I was really impressed with this album. Its reputation is quite deceiving as the quality of the album never drops from song to song. In fact this has tons of guitar shredding that is a must listen to for any fans of Young's more Proto-Grunge work. Also "T Rex" is amazing, who cares that its not poetry when the song is so propulsive.
A masterpiece of art pop
Growing up with Russian parents meant I had to hear their “ABBA Gold” tape at least four times a week in the car. Having that overtly happy music soundtrack my pretty awful childhood made I’ve always held a grudge against ABBA. Recently though I decided to listen to this album, the one least represented on “ABBA gold”. Reading the melancholic lyrics put to these beautifully ornate pop productions has helped me in the most difficult month of ... read more
If you want to hear some of Willie Nelson's best guitar playing I can't recommend this album enough.
Possibly the most ambitious release of the 90s. Its truly what the format of grandiose rock operas was made for
A perfect album, the movie is a fun watch too but the album is absolutely essential working as its own standalone work. I see it as a darker version of "What's Going On", portraying drug filled streets with a strong social message capturing the pitfalls of the hustler lifestyle.
For months following my fiancé’s passing Dec 2020 I was broken inside. Most music sounded like meaningless white noise. As a person whose biggest passion is music this disturbed me. Thankfully I was able to find solace in this album. The themes of anxiety, loss, and emotional instability present through this album really resonate with me. Meanwhile, the music is absolute bliss. It’s what I imagine heaven would sound like, a endless progression of beautiful funk grooves.
All four songs on here are essential to every Fela Kuti fan's collection. Even if you're not a fan you will be after hearing these tracks
