Björk says that she makes a constant effort to make her album covers look the way the music sounds. I think she nails that effort, but Kanye and Cudi do so too with this collaborative album. It’s psychedelic, sometimes dizzying, but also has moments of absolute and utter clarity, such as the beautiful ‘Reborn’. ‘Feel The Love’ sees Pusha T slowly build tension before releasing it into an explosive series of Kanye… sounds? It sounds amazing nonetheless. ... read more
Take me seriously when I say that I was impressed while listening to this album. The build-ups and instrumentals in general manage to fuse vaporwave and post-rock with this project almost sounding like something Godspeed You! Black Emperor would make if their music was more reverb-heavy and ambient. One song flows into the next almost seemlessly and I love the ‘Pacific Visions’ interludes placed throughout the album that help push its theme: disaster in what was once a peaceful ... read more
Bitches be like “Drake makes boring music and sounds generic and like he has no energy!!!1!!”. I’d reply, while sipping from my premium quality wine, saying something along the lines of “While I do not completely disagree with your statement, I believe that Champagne Papi provides with some of his best tracks on this album. This said, my main issue with it is that it’s a really mixed bag. You start the record off with Champagne Poetry, one of the best records ... read more
A blast of videogame nostalgia. From the tracklist looking like a series of lost, unnamed files to the synth heavy and vapoury sound that this record brings to the table, I feel like a child picking up the Wii for the first time again. Picturing this as the soundtrack to exploration games such as Omori seems quite fitting as well. Overall, an excellent aesthetic album.
I think I knew what to expect just from the genre name, “Future Funk”, but nonetheless this album is a good time and a welcome change of pace after Dan Mason’s ‘Hypnagogia’. Hyper-stimulating, multifaceted and constantly morphing tracks make for a great experience on first listen. I prefer this much more to ‘Discovery’ by Daft Punk as well, since I think that record was able to get pretty stale at points, whilst this one keeps you constantly on the edge ... read more
My journey in “Vaporwave” starts with this album. Since I discovered a genre that had nostalgia and 2000s like aesthetics as the main concept, I was definitely entrigued. And this album, my first taste of Vaporwave, definitely delivers. Well, kind of. I find the first leg to be very captivating, but the accentuated vocals after the fourth track, ‘Fade’, is my main issue with the project. For a genre so clouded with mystery and reverb, I didn’t think that this was a ... read more
Stunning melody, hypnotic performances, masterpiece all around. The outro is some next-level stuff too.
Unlike ANYTHING I’ve ever heard. I listened to this album on a plane for the first time, and then relistened to it a few times after that. This is a one-of-a-kind experience. No words can describe how I really feel about this album.
Destin masterfully crafts the single best album of this year, putting together a series of tracks that manage to reach peaks of aggression and abysses of emotional vulnerability, all whilst showcasing his one of a kind spitting ability and his stunning sining abilities.
Looking at the tracklist, there are really no bad songs and I can't find any flaw or anything to complain about regarding this album. The musical backgrounds can be minimal as they can be grand and larger than life, such as on ... read more
Yeezus. One of my favourite albums of all time, and for good reason.
I can't truly recall my first time listening to this album in full, but it must've been about a year ago. Anyways, I remember not being totally convinced about what he was doing on this album. I was perplexed, thinking to myself "What the hell is this?".
But one day, it clicked. And this is really the only album I've ever listened to have such a great impact on me. On Sight, clicked. Black Skinhead, clicked. I Am ... read more
There are some good song ideas here and there, but I think that making a 23-track album after 5 years of absence is not ideal for someone like SZA who, unlike Kendrick Lamar, doesn't have the same level of artistry or consistency in making music. This album is also weirdly mixed, I feel like her vocals sound way less polished than the ones on Ctrl, so much so that 'Blind' sounds exactly like the live version that SZA performed on SNL a few days prior to the release of the album. All in all, a ... read more
Warrior, active, volcanic beats, confrontational, icelandic octet, beats, cosmopolitan/icelandic contrast, green, patriotic.
This album constantly leaves me amazed. I can now see why Björk compares this album so much to Vespertine, it’s the exact opposite. Aggressive and masculine beats and much more energy in her vocals make for her best album yet (that I’ve listened to).
The music is so fun, Louis and Keely have great chemistry and it’s a great album overall. Definitely worth checking out.
Cool little album, of course it feels outdated, but still I like a few of the tracks on here, such as the intro track.
Kentuuuuuuuuuuuuckyyyyyyyy. It’s alright, it gets very stale after a few tracks though, I wouldn’t be able to tell the difference.
Gotta relisten to it, probably my score will rise after that. The Danny Brown feature was insane though.
A soothing and calm vocal jazz experience, accompanied by soulful performances from Sinatra's part. An all-around blissful album, what a way to start this journey.
