On April 9th 2021, Earl Simmons, otherwise known as DMX passed away. At this point DMX had stamped his name into the Hip-Hop hall of fame but to see him pass was devastating. His impact was so big that some of his most iconic songs expanded to audiences outside of the hip-hop community. About a month after his passing his posthumous album Exodus was released. This project is a really mixed bag for me. On one hand there are some great tracks like Hood Blues and Letter To My Son and on the other ... read more
Because JPEGMAFIA is rumored to be dropping three albums this year I decided that I wanted to finally jump into his music. His debut studio album Black Ben Carson was a really interesting listen. JPEG has a really unique style that is a lot more laid back than I expected. I expected a lot of noisy loud production but a lot of this stuff was more chill. Don't get me wrong there are definitely some tracks on here like ALL CAPS NO SPACES with some loud ass production, but there was a lot of laid ... read more
This was a cool project from Pierre. This project shows how Pierre can make quality music outside of being just a producer. Of course, the production is creative, colorful and very enjoyable on this album. Pierre also glides over his own production and it sounds pretty good. Overall this is a fun and enjoyable project to listen to.
This is one of the most mid projects of all time. This literally passes by and while there are a couple of cool tracks like Avalanche that you'll throw into your playlist, you'll come out of this project completely forgetting what you just listened too. It feels like the Migos have lost some of the magic that made them so great before. It sounds like there is a loss of passion on this project as well.
This project grew off of me quite a bit. A lot of the stuff on here is poorly mixed, and it really sticks out to me now. While Ski has some good flows on this album a lot of the hooks aren't great and the production is incredibly basic. Overall this is a really forgettable project.
Tyler, The Creator once again delivers an excellent album. He is on a historic run right now with three great albums in a row. CMIYGL sounds like you're taking the fanciest vacation known to man. The album is structured like a Gangster Grillz' mixtape with DJ Drama narrating. As usual Tyler comes through with excellent production on this thing. Some of these instrumentals sound absolutely gorgeous and convey the illustrious vacation vibe that the album is going for. The features on this album ... read more
Vince Staples really knows how to make a project that isn't necessarily bad, but doesn't have anything you would consider really great. His self-titled project here is a good example of this. Some of the songs are catchy here and there but nothing really sticks with me that much. Kenny beats does alright on production, but everything comes off as kind of bland and mild. This project is also really short at just 22 minutes long as well. Overall it kind of just flies by and I never really got ... read more
I'm still not buying into Ken Carson yet. This album had a couple of enjoyable tracks but really nothing stuck with me. The influence from Carti is very apparent on this project, from the some of the vocals and adlibs to the production itself. If Ken is able to branch out a little more, I think he does have some potential. Also I'm glad this isn't a bloated and super long tracklist either (since that seems to be trend nowadays). While I'm not the biggest fan I can still find a little bit of ... read more
Nas continues to prove why he one of the greatest to ever touch a mic. He's been around forever at this point and he's STILL making incredibly quality music. This is the second installment of the King's disease trilogy that he's been recently been working on. Paired with Hit-Boy's production, Nas is able to cater to an old-school hip-hop sound with a modern sound as well. This is a very good and consistent project (could do without the song YKTV though). One of the coolest songs has Nobody with ... read more
This album is just flat out fun. What a joy it was when this album first dropped. It's all I could listen too for a couple of months. Trippie Redd decides to take the rage sound which had been gaining popularity during this new decade and add his own twist on it. Many could say that Trippie is lazy while being derivative from this style, but I think he adds his own little flare into the sound that makes it fun. This album sounds like it was genuinely fun to make and you can tell from Trippies ... read more
Donda was an experience man. This was one of the most unforgettable album rollouts that I've ever been apart of. The hype generated from the listening parties was unmatched. The anticipation for the album to release just to be lied too every time, until on a random ass Sunday the album finally released and everyone rejoiced. Not to mention the album cover conspiracy just to find out the cover will be black I will never forget it. So how is the music? For the most part, pretty good. One of the ... read more
There were some cool tracks on this album but HOLY SHIT this was boring. The album runs for an hour and 26 minutes as well. This is an album that I'm never going to listen to in full ever again because it's simply not worth it. If Drake cuts this album in half then it's already significantly better. I'm tired of this trend of bloated albums because most of the time its quantity>quality. Tracks like Champagne Poetry, Fair Trade, Way 2 Sexy, No Friends In The Industry and Knife Talk were all ... read more
Baby Keem establishes himself as one of the new bright faces of rap on this album. This album and especially the song family ties have propelled Baby Keem into stardom. While this album isn't perfect my any means, there is a lot of really enjoyable songs on here. While, Baby Keem's music isn't as lyrically dense as Kendricks, he makes up for that with his energy and his unique voice. Baby Keem has a really cool voice, and it's definitely grown on me a lot. While some of these tracks aren't ... read more
Whiterosemoxie is someone who is very talented. He's developing a style that suits him and I think that this project is a good showcase of what he has to offer. A lot of cool spacy and smooth tracks on this album and ITACHI is a certified banger. He has a lot of potential and this album definitely proves that.
This was a fun EP by Paris Texas. I really like the rock-rap sound that they are going for and I'm excited to see what they're going to do next.
Ngl until writing this review I completely forgot this album existed. For a Young Thug project you think it wouldn't be this forgettable but holy shit this album was insanely boring. I don't see ANYONE talking about this album anymore. It's really long too, and I remember being bored out of my mind listening to this for an hour. At the very least there are a couple of cool tracks on here like Bubbly and Faces. Also the album cover is AMAZING and if this project was good I think this album cover ... read more
This project kind of shocked me. Chief Keef experiments with some new styles and some of this stuff sounds fucking awesome. Everybody knew Chief Keef was a pioneer, but even in 2021 he's still showing why he's one of the most influential rappers of all time. There's not much you can say about this project besides the fact that it just has a lot of bangers. This is just a really fun project to listen too and Bitch Where is one the biggest bangers of all time.
This album is neither good or bad, just mid. I have not returned to it ever since it came out and during my first listen I really didn't feel the magic that Cordae's last album provided. I feel like Cordae is trying to emulate the style of other rappers such as J. Cole a little too much and a lot of his stuff isn't very original. I also feel like he didn't evolve or expand from his last album and relatively maintained the same sound. On the bright side it's cool to see Cordae talk about his new ... read more
This album is definitely one that grows on you over time. I thought it was alright the first time I heard it and then the more listens I got I realized that this project is pretty good. Earl's style still hasn't completely clicked with me yet, but I can still appreciate the art he is making. There is some really beautiful production on this album as well (Fire in the Hole and Tabula Rasa are good examples of this). Overall, this is a cool project and another great display of craftsmanship by ... read more
I'm a little disappointed I'm not going to lie. EARTHGANG is such a fun duo and on this album there is a lack of that energy that makes them so great. Don't get me wrong, there are definitely some good songs on here where they're having fun, but this tracklist is really inconsistent. I think if they removed a couple of songs off of here this album could've been a little better. P.S Cee-Lo Green rapping on POWER is simultaneously funny as hell and hard as hell.
