Easily album of the year so far in my opinion. I'm probably gonna update this after a few more listens but in short, Boards delivered peak once again with one of their most immersive and otherworldly projects which also actually feels like it was worth the 13 year wait - a rarity these days. Also, "You Retreat In Time And Space" is completely deserving of the 96 user score as of right now, shit almost made me tear up whilst answering a PPQ on Russian War Communism.
It's a shame the band's so niche and unknown cause this album's amazing! I've been loving this record recently, it's not one of the best in the genre or anything but is probably one of the most fun albums I've heard in a minute and honestly mogs Getting Killed. The initial four track run in particular is genuinely one of the best of the decade, with Mr Winter's vocal talent shining more than ever and some absolutely bananas instrumentals to back them. My ... read more
It was my friend’s birthday yesterday, so I thought I'd listen to one of their favourite albums at the moment which was also something I'd been meaning to check out for a while now. I was going into this with pretty high expectations, I’d consider myself to be an avid shoegaze enjoyer and apparently it was similar to Sweet Trip, which is some high praise to say the least. Well it’s safe to say that this record lived up to the hype. Despite not containing any lyrics ... read more
Nice Shibuya-kei album. Whilst not blowing me away in any aspects, all of it was solid and definitely worth a listen. Not the biggest fan of the cover though, it kinda creeps me out.
The first half is peak Ween - some songs even rival the best stuff on Quebec. You get bangers like "Freedom of '76" which for Gene's vocal performance alone is absolute greatness and more emotional tracks like "Baby Bitch" which has some of the best writing the band has to offer. This was lining up to be another absolute slapper but after the previously mentioned "Baby Bitch", it slightly falls off. I don't mind the more "brown" tracks ... read more
Bleh, this was the concrete definition of went in one ear and out the other. I did not exactly have the highest hopes for this given that from what I'd heard - it was pretty much exactly the opposite of my taste and after listening to it, yeah, it's more or less what I expected. However, I can definitely understand that to some - this is the absolute shit and real life changing stuff. For me though, well it would just be easier if I went through the positives and negatives of the one, ... read more
When I first listened to this I thought, "Okay it's great but how could I give something with songs like "The Fucked Jam" on it more than a 90?" See, the thing you gotta understand is that when I thought this - my frontal lobe wasn’t exactly fully developed. Quebec is an absolute masterpiece and yes, it is absolutely more inconsistent than my other favourite albums but when you've got "The Argus", "Transdermal Celebration" and "I ... read more
Getting a lot of RDR2 vibes from this...
This album proves that country music is actually pretty peak if you look in the right places. Dudes voice is just really nice to listen to and the instrumentation is just as good. I'm not exactly the greatest at analysing the deeper meaning of the lyrics and shit, but they're also nice. In terms of my favourite songs on here, the first two were probably my favourites but there aren't really any weak moments and all of em are at least ... read more
Wow, I’m not really familiar at all with Injury Reserve but this blew me away. I thought I would enjoy this album decently enough but to be honest I didn’t exactly know how to feel about the singles. However, after listening to this in full twice now I can definitely say that they’ve all grown on me and the new ones are just as good (mostly Grapefruit is a weird one that’s for sure). Double Trio 2 is absolutely insane - I don’t have a clue what any of the lyrics ... read more
Weird album... but I liked it, mostly??? The start is the best part for sure, with the first two songs being the best two on the album but it's not like it falls off massively from there. The diversity is very impressive, and there is some pretty unique song concepts which work most of the time. I repeat, MOST of the time cause I don't really get the hype behind "Johnny, johnny, johnny" . It kinda goes sonically but the disturbing lyrics just make me feel weird and sort of ... read more
I definitely liked this album the first time I heard it, however, I don’t think I exactly listened to it in the best setting. I was sat at my desk, tired, at 10pm on a Monday night like a fat chud. So I thought maybe if I tried it again at the gym it would click a bit more. As per usual, I was correct. Listening to Chino pretty much moaning over these hard hitting guitar riffs and drums as I was benching a grandiose 20kg, well, in the words of a wise fellow who is okay at maths I guess ... read more
I will glaze this under-appreciated masterpiece until the day Frank Ocean drops. I wasn't crazy about it on first listen, but around August to December last year it quickly became one of my most played albums. Stylistically, the ambient production is very different from anything the band had made beforehand and I could see people preferring the catchier riffs and grooves on their earlier albums (losers), but trust me when this record clicks it's the most angelic thing ever. The piano ... read more
Rocky is honestly one of my top 10 favourite rappers. I really can't get enough of his run in the 2010's, especially his first two releases where he was making tune after tune and collaborating with some of the best producers out there. But this doesn't even hold a candle to his previous work (besides TESTING) despite the 8 year wait. Look, I appreciate that Rocky is trying to be a bit more experimental this time around and this project is pretty diverse for a mainstream rap ... read more
The coolest sounding album ever made in my opinion. The electronic beats laced together with the more traditional instruments such as the strings on "Joga" and the organ on "Unravel" are completely otherworldly and right up my street. Not only this but the tracks that lean fully into the electronic style like "5 Years" and "Alarm Call" are just as great, making this one of the most consistent records there is. I haven't even gotten into how Bjork ... read more
Pretty ominous stuff. I especially enjoyed the low key instrumentals and the lyrics whilst quite abstract, definitely paired well with the vibe of the album. Plus Beth Gibbons is a one of a kind vocalist who doesn't have a single performance on here that isn't amazing. My favourite song was probably "Roads" but I dunno how to explain why I like it so much, it's just literally me.
Bjork is one of my favourite artists if not my favourite and this is yet another stellar addition to her discography. I appreciated the more melancholy feel to this one which makes it a standout compared to her other works. However, I gotta be unbiased and reckon some of these tracks are slightly bloated, making me a bit less engaged throughout them. Despite this, "Stonemilker" and "Black Lake" are some of her best songs and overall, this is a fantastic record.
Seriously impressive album, one of the best of the year. However, I've seen that this band have been associated with Paul Thomas Anderson more than once on here so I'd like to use that to briefly rant about the drug deal scene in Boogie Nights. I mean its got everything: tension, comedy, great performances, banger needle drops, and when the camera focuses on Mark Wahlberg's empty stare as he realises how far he's fallen, that's like a top 10 moment in all of cinema. I ... read more
Just incredible from start to finish, I don't think this is GY!BE's best work but it's probably my favourite. Moya has one of the best payoffs I've ever heard and the depressingly relevant social/political commentary on BBF3 is genuinely haunting. Recommended!
I'm not even being hyperbolic when I say that the climax of LONG SEASON is one of the greatest things I've ever heard, almost brought me to tears.
