Love how this website has allowed me to find the most random stuff I'd never have found otherwise. Like seriously how else would some dude living in IKEA-land be finding Indie Korean noisy shoegaze? Thank you to all the people of AOTY, you all are amazing, so glad this community exists and we can all find wonderful music here :)
I love the classics of shoegaze of the 90s but never really delved into the contemporary scene. Now I'm familiar with Parannoul and I gotta say this is some of the ... read more
I like to think they play music in the background in heaven. Well this is for sure the kinda music the council of heaven has on their official heaven playlist™. What a pleasant surprise! I thoroughly enjoyed this album, best one that I've had the pleasure of hearing this year. I wouldn't say this is ahead of its time. It's timeless, truly.
There's some beautiful soundscapes here, its ambience was at first seemingly simple and maybe even boring, but a few songs in it suddenly hit. And ... read more
Pochonbo Electronic Ensemble is a North Korean group performing largely revolutionary and traditional folk songs. PEE being the first North Korean electronic pop group, combined with NK's isolated nature gives some truly surreal soundscapes. This is by no means groundbreaking (or should I say, revolutionary :D) but it's a curious insight into what the people of North Korea may actually listen to on their state radios that reportedly cannot be turned off. And actually, all things considered, ... read more

Warren Zevon's Excitable Boy... I don't remember how I initially discovered this album, but it's been with me for over a decade. Obviously I have warm feelings for it due to that. But nostalgia aside, now that I've heard so much more music from thousands of artists, I still think this is a great record! In a way this was very much alternative pop rock, in the sense that Zevon was unconventional compared to his peers with his tongue-in-cheek lyricism and often dark themes. But Zevon not taking ... read more
Wow wow this is so surprisingly good!!! I love the songwriting and the instrumentals (fuzzy bass works so well on here). They manage to make something interesting and quite complex beneath the surface, while still having that pop appeal. It's always nice to see a band that's not afraid to be more eclectic. Everything is so well composed too, the songs flow nicely into each other and it's just a joy. I don't think that the 90s style mastering (especially the piercingly loud percussion) aged very ... read more
Two Old Friends is just a lovely tune and so dear to me. The rest is pretty good too!
HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE! I hope that you - as well as everyone dear to you - will have a happy and healthy year. I hope that you'll make good progress towards your goals and that you always will keep your chin up. :)
For my first review of the year I want to review something I've been listening to nonstop for a couple weeks. What a joy this album was throughout. It's not just a collection of hit singles with some filler, everything hits in its own way, and I wouldn't say there was any weak ... read more
What is art? Is art that which is created or arranged with the intention to be contemplated by an audience? Or could art be simply anything that is perceived as art? I've been wondering about this for a while, and it's stuff like Colour Green that tears me on this matter. The songs on this compilation were never intended to be heard by anyone. Sibylle had long moved on and experienced a whole other lifetime before this album ever got released.
I want to draw a comparison to the diary of Anne ... read more
The End of the World is a fantastic single, my personal favourite song from 1960-1965. It's one of those timeless pieces of music. But the rest of the album is a bit boring.
How cool, electronic music from 1962! Literally decades ahead of its time. I found it funny that it was so novel at the time, they felt the need to specify in the title that it's electronic music. It's quirky and experimental, not too long, just a beautiful little nugget of music history.
Has its good moments (read: the second and third track) but it overall drags on too much, especially in the second half of the album.
This is such an honest and pure album, can't help but love it. To me this is the perfect balance between soft introspection and moments of explosive power. The vocals blend beautifully into the instrumentals, background vocals and other components to make for a lovely 46 minute journey.
This is the kind of album I would put on my "Good music isn't dead you silly, just listen to this" playlist to show to silly people who think good music is dead.
This album is a masterpiece! One of my personal favourite album covers of all time as well. On the vinyl release, side C on the second disc consists of a "Concerto for a Rainy Day", starting with Standin' In The Rain and ending with Mr. Blue Sky. This 4 part musical piece is, to me, one of the highlights of pop / symphonic rock in the 70s and 80s. Everyone and their dog knows Mr. Blue Sky, but the buildup that precedes it in this concerto elevates it to a whole other level. It gives ... read more
Gets some points for having tuned instruments (still sounds like shit though).
It's chill, jazzy and ambient, but at other points quite energetic and complex. Sometimes peaceful and comforting, sometimes quite eerie. Overall this was such a joy to listen to. 70s Japanese psychedelic folk just hits on another level.
Alright so, I will confess right off the bat that I do not like Radiohead, even though I have tried many times to get into their music. It's mainly because I just can't stand Yorke's voice most of the time. Still I figured I ought to put aside that dislike for the vocals and give the album a proper listen for once. I already knew and enjoyed some tracks such as Karma Police and No Surprises. But most of the songs that fill the rest of the album were just a drag to listen to and don't do ... read more
