88rising - Head In The Clouds
30

A mostly generic mix of formulaic pop songs that seem devoid of any soul within them. It really sounds like the gang decided that the intention of this album was to create as wide a breadth as possible within the pop industry in hopes that they could chart as many singles as they could. Most of the songs on this album are forgettable and the ones that aren't are likely solely because they were designed to cater to your preferred pop sound. For me that's the summer jams: History and Midsummer ... read more

In Flames - I, The Mask
70

In all honesty this album is probably closer to a 6 by itself but in comparison with the latest albums In Flames has been releasing, it earns bonus points for going into the right direction. FINALLY moving away from the Hard Rock edgy nonsense that the last few albums were: In Flames has returned with a surprisingly well mixed and well written album that even contain a few songs that I would consider stand out hits for Modern Melodic Death. The first few songs are fantastic and almost sound ... read more

Marshmello - Joytime
85

A fun, welcoming album into the mainstream of the EDM community with some actually impressive standalone songs like Summer. This album has beats and an aesthetic that is reminiscent of the "Happy Trap" genre, and almost feels like it was inspired by other in the genre like Wave Racer or Vindata. Vibrant, near irridescent visuals combined with the happy go luck vibe that Marshmello was presenting made this album release and tour an enjoyable experience for me.

Marshmello - Joytime II
10

Commercial success usually doesn't affect the sound of artists as rapidly and as harshly as it did to Marshmello; what was once a breath of fresh air into the edm community has now become a bastardized sound of overly produced soulless pop hits. This album would have been a zero had it not been for a few songs that carried some traits from the last album.

Ne Obliviscaris - Urn
95

Much like Citadel, it appears that Ne Obliviscaris are choosing to keep their music towards a large partially segmented movement of music that can really be viewed as a 1 hour near operatic musical piece rather than 6 individual tracks. Within this album the bandmates show that they are capable of enhancing their sound and were really able to fine tune each portion of their sound to be what i consider a very successful iteration over their past album. A heavier focus on the heavy aspects and ... read more

Ne Obliviscaris - Citadel
90

A welcome evolution to the symphonic progressive sound that Ne Obliviscaris created in their first album with a focus on creating almost classical-esque partitioning turning their albums into more of a singular movement of music, ebbing and flowing throughout the tracklisting to create a beautiful medley of ambient movements with soft instrumentation that transitions into harsh progressions with the incredible riffs created by Benjamin Baret and Matt Klavins and Xenoyr still remains one of the ... read more

Daughters - You Won't Get What You Want
100

A dark descent into madness, masterfully produced to be as mind spinning, disorienting and distressful to the senses as music could be. The pacing, the harsh sounds mixed with surprisingly melodic riffs at times and most of all: the agonizing vocals create a theme that one would only expect out of masterful works on the level of Dante's Inferno or I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream.

Kero Kero Bonito - Bonito Generation
95

Death grips but for weaboos.

In all seriousness however, this album is exactly as the cover would suggest, bubble pop with a blend of Japanese and American influences with the surprising benefit of also having a surprisingly solid production behind it. Each song doesn't really take itself too seriously and often deals with positive messages such as knowing when to sit back and take a break from all the effort you're putting in to persisting even in times of hardship. These elements are ... read more

BROCKHAMPTON - iridescence
70

Less abrasive than any of the saturation ever were but none the less still retains the mixture of banger elements from hip hop and the effects laden indie elements that you would expect from Brockhampton.

In short: Classic Brockhampton with yet a further focus on expression rather than creating bangers.

Ne Obliviscaris - Portal of I
100

Some of the best work to come out of the realm of Progressive metal since Opeth first appeared on the scene. A vibrant blend of violin with beautifully guitar riffs and unrelenting blast beats woven in unison. Xenoyr's incredible vocal range brings to life a welcome mix of high, opera like swells while also throwing in gutturals that are on par with the best in the scene. Every song can stand on its own as a journey worth taking on this album and I would highly recommend anyone who is even the ... read more

Monomate - Grand Battle
80

The best Nintendocore album I have ever heard. A beautiful blend of melodic 8 bit synths and harsh riffs all layered under some solid vocal presence. This album serves as a admirable attempt for a freshman album that leaves perhaps a bit of sadness knowing that Monomate will never refine the rough concepts he introduced in this album. Being an independent album, the mixing sounds off and there is often just a bit too much going on to ever really appreciate everything in one go.

Dark Age - A Matter of Trust
20

Linkin Park has never been harder in this new unrelenting album comprised of some of the hardest hits you will ever hear on the radio. Why continue to perform in a nitch genre when there are so many more opportunities available for those who choose to appeal to the masses?

Gorillaz - Humanz
50

An album that tries just a little too hard to mesh too much into too little. Many of the interludes and features felt out of place and many of the features did little to contribute to the overall tone in comparison to Plastic Beach. If it wasn't for catchy songs like Momentz and Ascension, or even the out of place Busted and Blue: this album would have been ranked much lower.

C418 - Minecraft - Volume Alpha
100

One of the most recognizable OSTs in video game history. A soundtrack so gripping, so serene and absolutely unique that without it: Minecraft may very well not have been the commercial success that it is today. Many of the songs on here are instantly recognizable as a Minecraft song and although each of the tracks all maintains an ambient aurora, they each establish a unique theme that sets them apart from each other which in turn culminates into an experience that sticks with the player as ... read more

AJJ - Christmas Island
95

A nearly completely different sound from their previously punk and folk fusions but in my opinion a step in the right direction. Songs like Temple Grandin and Children of God retain the punk essence Ajj has built themselves on over the years while songs like Coffin Dance and Getting Naked, Playing With Guns show a new side to them. This album serves as an eloquent blend of past and future sounds for the band.

AJJ - People Who Can Eat People Are the Luckiest People in the World
100

Spanning a little under half an hour, this album makes each minute count with memorable and diverse melodies and lyrics throughout it's 11 tracks. Each track, while not necessarily being a continuation of each other, fit the theme of the album flawlessly; revolving around concepts like nihilism, social anxiety, depression and at one point even children slave exploitation: Sean not only identifies his emotions with the listener in a way that many will be able to relate to. Also Sputnik succs ... read more

AJJ - Only God Can Judge Me and More
50

Probably AJJs worst album. That's not to say it's a bad album. There are some discography greats here like Darkest Heart, Growing Up and I am So Mad at You but the overall experience is brought down by nonsensical more intimate moments in Human Kittens, Guilt: The Song and Candle in The Wind. While they do seem to be Sean trying to add a more personal and serious inflection into his songs, it doesn't quite hold the allure the songs from PWCEP did.

Death Grips - Exmilitary
96

Harsh, caustic and unrelenting. The downright ugly yet fitting vocals from MC Ride as he delivers gripping hooks are something that will be entwined in your mind for years to come. Would be a perfect score if it wasn't for a few creative aspects I didn't like too much (most notably the mexican girl feature on Lord of The Game which even then is only for the part she plays in the chorus). Nitpicks aside however, this album retains it's spot as my personal favorite out of their discography

Death Grips - Bottomless Pit
98

All the unique characteristics you would expect to hear from Death Grips in an album that pulls you in, almost as if in a trance, and keeps you enthralled until the end. Abrasive MC Ride vocals in your ear one moment and a melodic electronic beats the next; Bottomless pit is a welcome addition to the Death Grips Discography.

Porter Robinson - Worlds
90

Close to perfect but unfortunately plagued with unfortunate lows from songs like Hear the Bells and inproperly ill fitting singles like Sea of Voices, the latter not necessarily being a bad song but feeling more like a song that belonged in the intro to a set, or at the very least, this album. Flaws aside, much can be said in respect to Porter deciding to stray away from his mainstage path to create a vision that he preferred, as this album is drastically different from his previous Spitfire EP.
