Immature? yeah. Still great? hell yeah.
How fun... Although the tape feels very dated at times with very generic/lazy choruses and flows that don’t really change much throughout, I actually think this has held up well considering it is well over 10 years old and how dated a lot of the other music from that era sounds today. Aside from it being so fun and playful, the aspects that bring this feeling are the highlights of the tape. The amazing sampling being at the top of this list, with ... read more
Bittersweet to hear an old Mac tape for the first time.
Firstly, in the same vein as Faces, it’s amazing that Mac’s family were able to bring this to streaming both for his existing fans and for new fans to check out. This is my first time hearing it, and as a mixtape back then it was probably a cool treat for his fans as they awaited his debut album, but listening now I can definitely say it’s not one of his best, and tbh probably among his worst. I would put it on the ... read more
Good background music, in a fun and chill kinda way.
Pretty torn on this one tbh. Didn’t really have many expectations going in having only listened to Bad Habits and none of Steve’s other work. That said I can’t really say I’m disappointed, but I didn’t really get as much out of the album as I would’ve hoped. It kinda reminds me of Rex Orange County’s project earlier this year in the sense that it’s a quick journey through their struggles with ... read more
Everything you could want from a Joey comeback album.
Very similar to 1999 quality wise. No real hiccups, amazing production, and Joey rapping at a level only a handful of rappers in this generation can replicate. I truly believe Joey is one of the most underappreciated rappers today and 100% deserves to at least be right below the Kendrick, Cole, and Drake tier with people like Travis and Tyler. Not many rappers can flow so effortlessly at such a high standard so consistently, and hopefully ... read more
A classic worthy tape from a 17 year old, nuts.
For me this is one of those albums that you know you would really like but you just never get around to listen to. I’ve listened to a handful of tracks before and obviously used to bump Waves back in the day, but with ’2000’ coming out I thought I’d better listen, and I definitely wasn’t surprised at how good it is. Firstly, I think Joey executed that ‘golden age’ 90’s boom-bap vibe perfectly. ... read more
This may as well be the dictionary definition of generic. And what is this man’s obsession with movie length albums?
It’s never a good sign when you have to mentally prepare for how long an album is, or when you have to take a half time break, or when it genuinely feels like an achievement to make it through the album. Like there’s definitely thousands of people who saw Chris Brown dropped a new album, saw 24 songs and 80 minutes, and then went a found a better use of their ... read more
What a rollercoaster. 65% slightly above-average Logic album. 35% AOTY contender.
Coming into it, 30 songs and over 70 minutes seemed like it was going to be a slog and a half to get through, and tbh the first half of the album was creeping towards it. There was no real bad songs (except Bleed It, that shit sounds horrible idc) but there also wasn’t many highlights that kept me interested or made me want to come back to the album and go through that 70 minutes again. Apart from In my ... read more
Yet another display of Kendrick’s artistic brilliance.
Baffling how this man can deliver music to this standard every time he releases an album. But this one is different. This is about Kendrick’s personal journey away from the spotlight and all that comes from the fame he has built himself. A journey to become the man that was hidden behind his lust addiction, the one that was shielded by the mindset forced on him by his father and society that men aren’t supposed to ... read more
A valiant but messy around the edges attempt at yet another genre.
I know he’s not going to get a lot of credit for diving into another genre because of how lacklustre the album is for a lot of people; but Drake’s ability to do just that, especially as being the biggest artist in the world deserves at least some respect.
That said, I thought this was a very solid performance from him given how left field and different it is to the rest of his catalogue. The fusion of house, ... read more
Why Kendrick gotta make us think so much?
Definitely an album that forces you to delve into the concepts and topics he's discussing in order to get the most out of it. And that’s a major reason why Kendrick is SO far ahead of practically everyone else in the game and is without doubt one of the 5 greatest rap artists ever. No other artist’s music is this layered, this thought out, this intentionally cryptic to the point where you could spend hours on hours on Genius dissecting ... read more
The feature list is probably the biggest achievement of the album.
Coming in I was pretty curious to hear how Jack would deliver given the hype surrounding the project and how much he has grown in popularity since his last project. And tbh I can’t say I’m absolutely disappointed, but I also can’t say he did nearly enough to justify his place position amongst the top of the game popularity wise.
Started off the album doing his best Drake impression on the first couple of ... read more
Toxic man does it again.
Yet another good album from Future who has been dropping consistently solid albums for the better part of 10 years now. The roll out for this album got me hoping it would be another classic. And although it didn’t quite reach those expectations it’s definitely an album that holds both replay value and assurance that Future still has the ability to drop quality material.
Starts of strong with Future coming out of the gates swinging on 712PM, but then ... read more
Another step in the direction of this year being a historic year for rap.
Even though I admittedly haven’t listened to as much Pusha than I should’ve, given the praise he receives I still went in with pretty high expectations and not gonna lie I was kinda worried after the first 2 tracks. I don’t know if I’m in the minority here but I find Pharrell’s production really really annoying at times. And even though I thought he definitely did a good job with a lot of ... read more
Set herself up to fail from the very beginning.
As soon as I saw 20 tracks and close to an hour runtime I knew it was pretty much impossible for the album to be anywhere close to good. That said this is probably up there with the most forgettable album I’ve heard. It starts off solid with Hollywood Dreams being a rare introspective moment and Blick Blick supplying the short dose of fun it was designed to do. But after that it’s a wasteland of mediocrity, staleness, and amateur ... read more
Disappointing where i hoped it would shine.
After coming away with less than I hoped for on his self titled project, given the title of this project I was hoping that it would be the one where Vince brought me into the world of his upbringing and gave me an in-depth view of what life was like growing up in Long Beach (in a GKMC type of way). Was I stupid for expecting so much from Vince? Probably, but did he give me even half of what I was expecting? Unfortunately no.
I think the main gripe ... read more
Ok maybe Off The Grid was a fluke.
Came in with decently high expectations after hearing him rap for his life on Off The Grid and also liking City of Gods despite Kanye’s weak verse. But unfortunately these expectations weren’t anywhere near met. First off, 17 tracks and 51 minutes is a decent length, maybe a few too many tracks but we’ll let it slide. The album started off decent over the first 4 tracks; Intro track was pretty low energy but set the tempo well, not sure how ... read more
Really really clever and unique album that dives into perspectives on problems that one wouldn't expect. Tackling racism and depression by giving them titles (2 black dogs) and personalities adds a lot to the insight Genesis provides on the issues. Portraying depression as an 'evil brother' that wants to overtake your soul and use it for evil is also genius.
Never listened to an album that has made me this mad. I knew there was high, HIGH chance it was going to be absolute bottom of the barrel stuff before listening but it still somehow was worse than i anticipated. Firstly, in terms of artistic direction, Pump has plummeted off the charts in terms of effort, creativity, appeal + every single thing else that makes good music good. He has a 100 word vocabulary (if he's lucky), one of the most annoying voices possible, and every single song has the ... read more
Given what happened to X and his legacy, when you get into multiple posthumous album territory things can get scary regarding quality. In Juice's case thought the label has 1000s of songs to choose from, it's just a matter of which ones they choose, where they place them, which features to add and so on. And while i think they did an OK job here, it's far from Legends Never Die in terms of not only quality, but also vibe and overall connection to Juice artistically. Just hoping the next release ... read more
