Could've been a whooole lot worse.
A lot of things about this EP were screaming for it to suck; Tecca showing up multiple times (albeit actually putting in effort), Yachty doing his best Yeat impression, and it being pretty much a waterhole for all the popping Carti clones. But I actually kinda enjoyed some tracks, particularly the last three. It’s never going to be an amazing album when Yeat has the strongest song on it, but there were surprisingly a few redeemable qualities here. ... read more
My favourite thing about these bots is seeing them struggle to find out how to actually rate the album.
One of the best 'disappointing' albums ever.
I’m in a weird position with this album. I’m both really impressed with the insanely natural and consistent high level of rapping shown, but also disappointed in the direction it went in as it progressed. It started out on a tremendous note with one of the best produced songs of the year as the opener. Then progressed into Black Thought and the features discussing some very deep topics concerning the struggles African-Americans face in ... read more
HUGE jump in overall quality from his debut album.
Up until a week or so ago I hadn’t listened to a full Wayne album or mixtape apart from Tha Carter V (which I still really like). The size of his catalogue always put me off going through it before other artists with much shorter discographies. Thought it was about time and decided to start all the way at his debut album Tha Block Is Hot. I knew Wayne was really young at the time but expected to get at least a couple of tracks and some ... read more
I, for some unknown reason was ready to commit to listening to this. Listened to the first track and immediately thought there's probably better ways to spend 2 hours of my life. Listened to a few tracks anyway. In short Roddy Ricch still doesn't remember how to write a good hook, French Montana & Tory Lanez on the same song shouldn't even be legal, and The Black Slim Shady is as tragic as it sounds.
Pretty rewarding, but also slightly flawed introduction to Brent for me.
Not a huge RnB guy and this is my first Brent album so I wasn’t really going in with any preconceptions or any major expectations. Came away thinking it was probably a bit better than I expected it to be, with it having aspects and doing things that you don’t really hear in music much nowadays. The obvious one being the inclusion of skits and how they dictate and change the flow and feeling of the album.
I ... read more
If you told me this was made in 2012 with a $100 budget, I’d believe you.
Bobby, Bobby, Bobby, oh what a shame. I didn’t even know this came out until I saw a tweet saying how bad the streams are; and bad they are. Bobby really came home after 8 years and can’t even get 20k streams on songs in the first week.
What happened to Bobby was pretty strange. I remember when it was announced he would be getting out and a lot of people were excited to see what he’d do, what ... read more
Cinematically captivating to say the very least.
This album is the embodiment of how concepts should be used by artists. Detailing IGOR’s constant and desperate search to save his relationship is both intriguing and sad. The lengths IGOR is willing to go to fix the relationship is displayed constantly throughout the album and helps keep you engaged for every track. The chronological transformation of the relationship is also great. Going from being joyously in love, to sudden displays ... read more
The first glimpse of Tyler's true talent as an artist.
A really incredible jump for Tyler both stylistically and artistically from Bastard and Goblin. Beyond this, the story told on this album and how it ties to both of those albums is equally great. It’s both really upfront but also vague enough to the point where you constantly have to think about what it actually means narrative wise. Song wise, it was miles more consistent than his previous two albums and featured both higher highs ... read more
Really rough and rugged experience saved by its ties to the concept.
An obviously concept-loaded album that focuses on what happened after Wolf. In saying that though, the concept is miles off as strong as it was on Wolf but does still feature Dr. TC and introduced Tron Cat as basically the opposite of Dr. TC. The session goes on a crazy trip which ends in Tyler (or his alter egos) killing his O.F member friends, him having a meltdown, and Dr. TC breaking the news that he and all of this is ... read more
Could've been stronger, but serves its purpose well.
Tyler’s ability to create this concept of a therapy session in which he explains his many hardships including living without a father in his life, and how this has caused him to become depressed and crazy is commendable. In saying this, this ‘character’ that Tyler has created is incredibly dark and over-the-top edgy. The switching between seriousness and this satire character/mindset does create the problem of having to ... read more
A time capsule to a time the Migos had the rap world in a chokehold.
This album is important in many ways. Firstly, it's a great indicator of a time period (2015-2017) where many look back wishing rap was still this fun and lively. Secondly, much like Future and his insane run a couple of years prior and Travis with Rodeo, the Migos' wave was a major component in trap as a genre catapulting itself to the top of rap; a place that it hasn't really let up since, with many artists (including the ... read more
Another over-hated Drake album, but one that definitely deserves criticism.
The most torn I’ve ever been from a Drake project. Despite liking more than half of the tracks and finding value in some others, I can’t help but give this the title of Drake’s most lacklustre and run of the mill project. He plays it incredibly safe and by the book, which opens up legitimate questions regarding his ability to adapt his sound and step out of his comfort zone like many of his peers are ... read more
A magical mess.
What an experience… the level of artistry Kanye is displaying pretty much 20 years into his revolutionary career is absolutely insane. As much as people were annoyed with the constant pushing back of the album and the listening party process, in my opinion those listening parties, especially the 2nd one added so much to the feel and overall immersion of the album. That aside, 23 tracks (minus part 2s) and around 90 minutes was a massive risk for Kanye, but thankfully ... read more
An emotional but gratifying gift to the fans.
Being the first posthumous Juice album, his team decided to go the sentimental route and create an album that showcases Juice’s many signature styles while also trying to cater to the emotions of the fans in relation to his passing. As a whole this was a big success; it’s a great balance of sad and more up tempo tracks, the track list is very consistent both sonically and thematically, and it has a number of highlights with few to no ... read more
The calm before the storm that was DS2.
A handful of highlights but for the most part it's just typical Future. Feels pretty low effort and almost can’t tell the tracks apart. Definitely think Beast mode 2 has the edge over it.
Thanks Ciara.
Matches and probably overtakes the highs of DS2. Fuck Up Some Commas, Throw Away, and Codeine Crazy are some of not only my favourite trap tracks ever, but the greatest in general. Honestly, what he did on Codeine Crazy should be studied for decades to come, undoubtedly the best trap song of all time. Oh and that switch up on Throw Away is also bonkers.
In addition, these are some of the darkest, grimiest, and hard hitting beats Future has ever rapped over, tracks like 2Pac, ... read more
Just an onslaught of trap classics over amazing production.
Insane production by Metro and Southside, mixed with equally as consistent performances from Future murdering pretty much every verse and chorus. Thought It Was a Drought is one of the best openers ever if we're being completely honest. The highlights contain some of the best trap songs ever, while even the lower tier tracks get by off production alone. Is it maybe a liiitle bit overrated? probably, but that doesn't change the fact ... read more
Another where the foundation was there, but he still hadn't hit full stride yet.
Could he was still trying to fully find his sound. Was allllmost there, but not quite. Resulted in a mixed bag that wavers in quality. You have great tracks like Move That Dope, Honest, and the final 2 tracks; but then you also have a couple not so great tracks like My Momma and its annoying chorus, and I Be U that just never got going. Could still definitely see the improvement from Pluto.
He hadn't tapped into his true toxic abilities yet.
Can DEFINITELY tell this was made in 2012. Sometimes that’s a good, nostalgic thing (like on tracks like Straight Up, Tony Montana and Turn On The Lights) but most of the time it means the tracks fall short and sound extremely dated. But the foundations were there for the most part.
