Pretty much just a more mature version of SOUR, in a good way.
Was always going to be a massive task following up how much of a moment SOUR was for her, but I reckon she delivered. I don’t think there’s as many standout moments here, but you can definitely tell she tried to prove herself as an artist and let it be known that she’ll be around for a while. Wasn’t sure about the direction it was going to go after the first 2 tracks and how ‘rocky’ they were, ... read more
The album cover scares me, and the lyrics confuse me.
I only listened to her other 2 projects this week because I knew this was coming out and know a lot of people love her work. I did get a decent amount out of those albums and thought maybe she had something special brewing; unfortunately not the case for me. She obviously has a lot of strong opinions on things, and mainly on things I either can’t relate to, or don’t pay much attention to at all; so it’s kinda hard to ... read more
Why does Trippie make being a fan so hard………….
A beyond disappointing end to the ‘A Love Letter To You’ series. May be one of the most disappointing albums in recent memory from a fan perspective. The last album in the series you would expect Trippie to go all out and give it his best effort; and he even said in the past that he has always had this album in the back of his mind when making other projects in the mean time and putting tracks aside ... read more
Did it live up to the hype? Not quite, but not many albums could've
Did it save 2023 for rap? Again, sadly not quite
Is it still a very solid addition to Travis’ already classic discography? Definitely
Travis definitely knows how to create hype for his albums, I can’t really think of someone who does it better tbh. And while hype is obviously a positive majority of the time, It does also work in combination with his strong discography to create a very high standard of quality that ... read more
5 albums, no misses in 3 years at almost 50 and basically 30 years into his career. Untouchable longevity from someone who has a more than legitimate case for being the GOAT.
Although I haven’t been as huge on this run Nas is on these last 3 years as a lot of other people have been, it would be absolutely stupid to not marvel at just how insane it has been from a career perspective. Coming up on 30 years since Illmatic and he is STILL making album of the year material for some people. ... read more
This is what happens when risks don’t work.
Can’t help but be really disappointed; all the hype for this album I expected fireworks. The first mistake was obviously the length, 26 tracks and nearly an hour and a half is way WAY too long full stop. I get it’s been a long time since Eternal Atake, but that’s not an excuse to bloat the hell out of the album. 25 new tracks and there wasn’t one I thought ‘yep this is going to be a hit’, incredibly out of ... read more
Gunna vs Thug (Round 1) = Advantage Gunna
Definitely not a coincidence that this came out around the same time that Gunna dropped his project. And considering this is mostly not current day Thug material in addition to the stacked feature and production list, i think you have to give ‘round 1’ to Gunna; even if he was in the wrong for ‘snitching’. Both albums are very very close in terms of quality to me.
Due to the fact that he’s obviously not here to fully be ... read more
A total onslaught of everything that makes a rap album great.
Wow what an album man. Track after track it’s just absolutely top level elite rapping from DOOM over basically flawless production. Without question my favourite DOOM album so far out of Doomsday and Madvillainy. Mainly because I just feel the rapping he shows here is just on another level of slickness than on the others. It may not be as technical, but that saves it from becoming too much of a word salad that I felt like it ... read more
Both really solid and disappointing at the same time.
Truthfully haven’t heard much work from KAYTRANADA, but I expected great production, and I got just that. In regards to Aminé I’ve been a fan of his since ONEPOINTFIVE and he has shown me nothing but consistently good music over that period. He definitely doesn’t get the credit he deserves, he’s built himself a very respectable discography and is very versatile and fits on a lot of different styles. So, ... read more
Great return album for Daniel.
He took a massive step style wise here and the result is an album of the quality that all of his music should be. I know a lot of people love his previous work, but for it just never fully connected. I definitely think his other work is good, but to me it’s also very one note and ’safe’; meaning if you weren’t really feeling a few tracks, most likely you wouldn’t be a huge fan of the rest of the album. But that’s far from the ... read more
Not great, but they actually showed improvement in a lot of ways.
I really, REALLY didn’t enjoy going through their discography before listening to this album. Yeah I liked 1 or 2 songs from each of their 3 albums, but there wasn’t a single one that I came away from with positive thoughts overall. As a result I can’t say I was excited for this release, and was scared that even after a 5 year album hiatus we were still going to get the same Rae Sremmurd. But I can confidently ... read more
Maybe one day he’ll reach his potential.
To be honest this might be the most consistently average album I’ve heard. Were a couple good songs to start out, but after that it was straight mideroni. I can’t say I’m a big 6LACK fan or that I was eagerly waiting for a new album, but I’ve enjoyed some of his previous work (particularly his debut) and had hopes going in that he could finally find his sound and produce another solid album. But sadly everything here just ... read more
Expected another dumpster album, but he actually showed at least a little bit of evolution.
After his 2021 project genuinely being one of the worst things I’ve ever heard, I gotta be honest you have to give Pump at least a little credit for coming back and stepping out of his comfort zone for a number of these tracks. Most tracks sound different from each other and have their own personality (particularly on the first half) which has always been a major problem for him. Yes it may be a ... read more
A bizarre and confusing journey into a broken mind.
slowthai is a very unique artist that comes with a lot of passion and character. Haven’t listened to it much since its release but I remember liking most of what he brought on his last project and was excited to see where he would go here. Immediately met with an intense sound and it became clear very quickly that we would be going on an uncomfortable journey. A journey into an obviously tormented and broken mind of an unhinged ... read more
Another almost great album from Logic.
He’s just farming light 7’s at this point. But another really solid inclusion into Logic’s underrated catalogue. Taking it back to 2011 and his early years in rap and how his mindset has changed in the years since was a cool journey and engaging listening experience. It’s obviously not the greatest album in the world, but with the long skits spread throughout and him sprinkling a mix of personal and more up-tempo tracks it was a ... read more
The absolute pinnacle of production.
If this was trimmed down a bit it could’ve honestly been one of the greatest rap albums ever; but unfortunately it does drag. And while you have some of the greatest and most iconic rap songs ever here, you also have multiple tracks (particularly on the 2nd half) that drag it down and are carried solely by the production.
And speaking of the production, this has to be at least top 5 and has a legitimate case of being the best produced rap album of ... read more
The Illmatic of the West Coast, just not as good.
I don’t wanna say the album is overrated because it’s obviously incredibly influential and is a very very entertaining listen with some amazing tracks; but I can’t lie and say I didn’t expect at least a little more considering how praised it is.
Firstly, Dre’s production on here is obviously insane and is the main drawing point of the album. Pretty much flawless the whole way through and would make the album ... read more
Wow in the best way possible.
Yachty deserves all the credit he’s getting for this album and then some. It’s obvious that he put his all into this and he’s rightfully reaping the benefits of doing so. It’s so bizarre and abstract but it all comes together seamlessly, cannot commend him enough for the huge leap he made out of his comfort zone. From sounding like a lost cause on that Michigan Boy Boat mixtape to album of the year contender, shoutout Yachty. No idea where ... read more
At this point does he even want to make another good album??
Trippie really does it do himself and sets himself up to fail doesn’t he. There’s no logical reason why this had to be 25 songs and damn near an hour and a half long. It can’t be to maximise streams because there’s no way people that aren’t Trippie fans are going to listen front to back, let alone come back to it. And for basically every song except the last to sound fairly similar it only adds to the ... read more
