Weatherday - Come In
NR

I respect their choice to make this album so lo-fi but I’d personally rather these be higher quality. There are some really promising sounds that I just wish I could hear better. I can’t deny some of the genius that is at play here like with the nearly 14 minute song, My Sputnik Sweetheart. It goes to so many places and I love most moments of it, but even that track has sections where it's too blown out and the vocals are far too buried for my liking. Again, I get what they were ... read more

Lucy Dacus - Historian
92

Wow wow wow I haven’t heard something this beautiful in a while. Lucy was always my favorite on the boygenius records with songs like We’re In Love, Afraid of Heights, and True Blue and damn does she deliver with her solo work. This almost feels as if it was made for me, I absolutely love everything that’s going on here. The guitar tones all over this album are so perfect and gorgeous, specifically the more bluesy ones on Timefighter and the ones on Yours & Mine that ... read more

Sufjan Stevens - Michigan
89

While not quite as grand as Illinois, Michigan still comes through with an amazing, more stripped down collection of songs. There was an obvious quality increase between this and his next album in the states project but that doesn’t discredit this at all. I love the more folky feel of this record with far less epic builds, although that’s not to say there aren’t any. There are a few like on They Also Mourn Who Do Not Wear Black or on Oh Detroit, Lift Up Your Weary Head! but ... read more

ANOHNI and the Johnsons - My Back Was a Bridge for You to Cross
88

This was absolutely stunning. That’s the only word I can use to describe the poetry and the sound palette of this record. The use of space on this album is nothing short of gorgeous. Every single instrument is perfectly arranged to create such a smooth and easy listen. Despite the sound, a lot of the lyrics here are heartbreaking, like on Can’t with this outro refrain of “I can’t stop it, can’t undo it, can’t reverse it, I won’t have it.” while ... read more

Dazey and the Scouts - Maggot
91

I love the pure fucking energy of this project. It is just banger after banger with some fantastic lyricism as well. These songs dive into some pretty dark topics but makes them easily digestible with the absolutely rocking instrumentals. I love how freely they speak on topics like grooming, transness and a bit of horniness. They manage to make light of some of the bad things with some genuine laugh out loud moments, like on Nice Nice where they go insane describing things that “nice ... read more

glass beach - the first glass beach album
93

This was a bit of a heavy album, not necessarily lyric-wise (although the track glass beach did fuck me up), but just in general there was a lot going on so I’m going to keep this brief. I may come back to it one day for a full review because, at least off of first listen, I think this one will be a mainstay within my taste.

While the first glass beach album isn’t quite as polished or focused as their second record plastic death, it sees glass beach in an extremely creative spot. ... read more

Steve Lacy - Apollo XXI
66

I enjoyed this while it lasted, however, there were a lot of moments I just really did not care for. The instrumentals fall flat far too often and the album feels almost demo-like at points. Those qualities really show through with moments like the instrumental just randomly cutting out on In Lust We Trust in order to get back to the chorus after an instrumental break. Or even with the way the three parts of Like Me transition, with these sections of silence between each other. The silence ... read more

leroy - dariacore
85

Holy shit this was fun. What a show of Jane’s production chops. It really is sensory overload in the best way. I love just the pure quantity of samples on here as well. I don’t think it’s for everyone but I love how insane this is.
Fav Tracks: It’d probably be all but it works best as a full project

quinn - drive-by lullabies
91

This is one of those records that, before even hearing it, I knew I would love. Surprise surprise, I enjoyed the fuck out of this. quinn brings these amazing, glitchy/hyperpop-esque instrumentals with even some hip hop elements that almost feel like they’re catered to my exact taste. The sounds she uses throughout this album are so ear grabbing for me, I really can’t get enough. I love the lyrics here too, a lot of them are genuinely heartbreaking especially on tracks like school ... read more

Pink Floyd - Atom Heart Mother
87

I didn’t expect to enjoy this as much as I did. Pink Floyd are just that good though. This record is mainly centered around the 24 minute suite that it's named after, Atom Heart Mother. This is an amazing, 6-section prog piece that goes in a bunch of directions, even becoming an electronic, almost avant garde type song around the 15 minute mark. If I had one complaint about this song it’s this instrumental change that only lasts for about a minute at 14:30. It's this giant build ... read more

Oceanic-air - Don't You Want The Truth
72

The beats here are great. I really think their production chops are getting better, especially with tracks like No Matter What You Do. I'm not sure if its just the way the vocals were treated or the way they were mixed or what but they do feel a little out of place on this EP. The lyrics are okay. They're stated very plainly, which I'm okay with even if they could use maybe a little more subtlety at points. Again, I don't mind the almost quiet part being said out loud style of the writing ... read more

Lana Del Rey - Paradise
63

After Born To Die, Lana Del Rey apparently decided to take most of the engaging parts of her songs out. I didn’t love the sort of hip-hop inspired parts of her previous album but they at least formed some lively moments for the record. I hate to say this but these songs are boring. They’re not even bad, there are things I like about nearly every song, I just can’t focus on them for their entire lengths. I love how epic the chorus of Body Electric sounds, however, the verses ... read more

Future - FUTURE
80

As I’ve pretty much come to expect with Future’s music, his self titled album is bloated, yet still has its bangers. There wasn’t much on here that I could say I disliked, the only real example of a track I actively didn’t want to listen to was Good Dope, and even that’s just kind of whatever. There are definitely some songs here that started to feel very samey, however, I don’t believe that fully discredits the quality of the album. There are aspects to most ... read more

Mac Miller - Blue Slide Park
62

I’m impressed by how well Mac was able to mature as an artist. Macadelic saw him at kind of a halfway point between his old and new sound, and by the time of Watching Movies with the Sound Off he was pretty much a fully developed lyricist and rapper. I can’t quite say the same about Blue Slide Park though. Mac was clearly trying to get away from that “frat rap” label at this point and, in my opinion, hadn’t developed enough as an artist to make something as mature ... read more

Joni Mitchell - Blue
97

I don’t know if I can quite describe what I just listened to. This record left me floored at every single turn. I didn’t know whether to smile because of how good it was or to cry because of how melancholy it was. It put me in this kind of limbo state where all I could do was just be amazed by the sounds. Joni’s voice is so gorgeous and her playing is so soft. She makes these songs where, by the time I’m done listening, all I can say is “wow.” Her writing is ... read more

The Weeknd - My Dear Melancholy,
80

My Dear Melancholy, doesn’t see The Weeknd at his best, however, it's still a great crop of tracks. It goes for this super dark, R&B sound that is a bit similar to where his career started. These songs feel a lot more washed out though and definitely feel more “modern” with their sound. That is somewhat at fault here as I feel those earlier projects have so much personality and memorable choices whereas this contains far less of that. Abel and his producers know how to ... read more

LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver
93

Ughhh these guys can’t miss. Just like This Is Happening, Sound of Silver comes through with constant grooves and instrumental builds from front to back. That’s not even to mention Murphy’s classic writing style that I can’t get enough of. From the two minute build on Get Innocuous! that starts the album, to the chaotic outro of New York, I Love You but You’re Bringing Me Down, there’s not really a weak point on this record. Time to Get Away is very similar ... read more

Sexyy Red - In Sexyy We Trust
76

I hate the discourse around Sexyy Red as I feel it just gets tired so fast. Oh you hate her subject matter and how much she talks about the things she does. Oh you talk about how unlistenable it is despite it being relatively generic outside of her lyrics. Not to say you can’t have those opinions, anyone’s entitled to believe whatever they want, but it sucks because there are other far more valid reasons to dislike Sexyy Red. She likes Trump, there are videos of her saying ... read more

Clairo - diary 001
74

I thought I’d go ahead and listen to this while I’m going through Clairo’s discography before the new album. I don’t see why this is hated as much as it is. It’s clearly unpolished in areas, but it's a pretty enjoyable listen for me. It does have by far the least mature version of Clairo I’ve heard, but that’s to be expected on a debut EP. She doesn’t give these tracks much time to be fleshed out, so a lot of them just feel like small ideas. I ... read more

Clairo - Sling
89

I thought it was finally time to get around to listening to this after Clairo announced her new album today. I had some relatively high expectations because I already thought Immunity was good and had heard this was quite a few steps above that record, and let me just say, it did not disappoint. I love how stripped back everything is, these songs are so quiet in the best possible ways. The production being as good as it is goes to show how insane Jack Antonoff’s run from 2019-2021 was. ... read more
