This was a little dense but I am glad I stuck with it because it was incredibly rewarding. Some of the later tracks were phenomenal, it exploded into life.
This is a fabulous album, intimate and the instrumentation is so satisfying in places. However, it doesn't quite sustain that instrumentation, the voice lacks a little range/power and the tracks overall lack a bit of variance in pacing. This isn't quite a world you go into, and that is why I don't rate it 100. That said I did really like this, so much so that I listened to another album of his straight after.
When I was a young lad, I had a friend whose dad listened to these and rode a motorbike. My mum didn't approve of this band at all and her scorn for them prevented me from listening to them 😂
Roll on 23 years, I've finally got around to listening to this and it is very good, it passes the entertainment test which so much highly rated music on here does not.
One day, at an album museum, this will be locked away in a secret drawer, away from general public consumption. It is ... read more
I feel that she is still finding her sound as a solo artist on this album but there's some good tracks like Ocean of Tears and So Hot You're Hurting my Feelings. It's very likeable although a little inconsistent compared to Desire, I want to Turn into You. The community is spot on with their appraisal of this album.
This is just a man talking quietly. I don't accept that this is music, at least put a little effort in!
Though many people are alarmed by geese, geese are genuinely impressive animals. Their teamwork is disciplined. In their V-formation, each bird reduces wind resistance for the one behind it, and they rotate the lead so no individual burns out. They communicate constantly - HONK HONK HONK - not just to make noise, but to encourage each other and stay coordinated.
There's something all people can learn from them. Progress comes easier when the load is shared, when leadership rotates, and ... read more
The recurring, predictable loops are just delightful to the autistic mind.
You won't convince me that this is original though. It is blatantly inspired by Marquee Moon.
Some loooovely sounds, but now I know what her voice can do, what was holding her back?
This was dense, fatiguing and directionless. The whole thing sounded the same, it was just floaty and rainy, with no variation in pacing. The lyrics and narrative were boring and the vocal delivery was unnoteworthy. The one hour and 8 minutes would have been better spent sitting in silence.
When I was a kid, I thought you became an adult and that was it.
As an adult though, life hardens you and your experiences shape you, until you grow again. If you are lucky, you'll have your friends and your family, people you can rely on still around you, maybe family of your own. Whatever happens, life makes you a better person.
This album felt to me like it was about that. It's nostalgic and mournful, but it's also hopeful, it's a celebration of the fact you have ... read more
Wow. I was genuinely in awe through most of this.
Her voice is spectacular, it completely carries you away in the music. It's dark, it's exciting, it's grandiose, it's anxiety-inducing, it's an exhilarating experience.
I'll be amazed if this isn't Album of the Year.
This is how I imagine a band would sound if they showed up and forgot or couldn't afford all the instruments they need.
They've done a reasonable job with what they do have but the sound feels incomplete and it lacks complexity. The vocals are not that great either.
However, it does pass the crucial question I ask of any work: was it entertaining? Yes it was. For that, it deserves to be liked.
A lot of my friends have been raving about this album saying it "spills the beans" so out of obligation I gave it a listen. Unfortunately, I have to say it was terrible, as I did and do not care one iota about her previous relationship.
The stand out parts were a few dreamy melodies and some excellent sampling of Lumidee. However, this was totally overshadowed by her oversharing like she is still a teenager.
This was an exercise in everything music shouldn't be. I really ... read more
The vocals are inoffensive, maybe a little pedestrian. However, that's fine because you can focus on the drums, melodies and other instruments, on which they've done an excellent job. This album is curious and lovely on the ear, while retaining qualities that fans of harder music might enjoy. Plus I like the zebra.
To say there is only this one album, it's an incredible effort. You'd think there should be a period where he's quite raw as an artist but he seems to be the complete article almost by his first album. This is the kind of maturity you'd expect from someone who was experienced and seasoned.
He has a brilliant range of music, the instrumentation is brilliant and his voice is very capable in terms of range. However, if I'm being critical I think his voice lacks a little ... read more
