I listened to Brat first. Brat is a stronger concept, but some of the noises on this are just delicious. At one point I felt how I imagine a cat would getting the back of their neck scratched by their owner.
Also, this is quite high energy and feels optimistic, which I am enjoying. So much music gets a good rating because it's deep and introspective. But I like it so much when the music just goes a bit, it's why I seem to always like electropop.
When I was younger I disliked brats. I didn't like their energy, I associated it with being spoilt. Now I'm older, I've changed perspective. I like a little novelty, a little challenge, a little unapologetic and confident self-assuredness. And honestly a little destruction! In other words, I now suffer idiots gladly, and this album was good, let's all aspire to be a little more brat
On holiday in Portugal, wife and kid down for a nap, I’ve got a few pints of Super Bock in me and the sun hitting hard at 29 degrees. Decided to throw this on again, and it’s one of those rare times where the setting and the music line up perfectly. The furniture on the terrace even seems to match the colours of the album cover. It feels like it was meant to be.
Imaginal Disk was fantastic the first time around, but in this moment it’s elevated. The synths feel warmer, the ... read more
I listened to this and the album was pretty decent, it was fun. However, I have since read about what this wife's artist has said and I feel deeply uncomfortable listening to this again or scoring it favourably. Every favourable score makes this artist more likely to be listened to and royalties for the artist. I don't want a child rapist to be the beneficiary of my interest in music.
I'll be the honest, on the first listen my tiny brain did not understand this. It sounded like a racket and a bit of a din. At 1 hour plus it's also a really long time to feel like the music is directionless. I'll have another go at some point and amend my rating and review if something clicks.
On first, second and third listen, Marquee Moon felt flat. On the fourth listen, the magic clicked: I noticed three layers. There’s the steady backing and the voices, but it’s that hypnotic, electronic chiming striking again and again, that makes the album. It’s repetitive yet that's what makes it. Suddenly, I get why this album is legendary.
Having recently listened to Construção, Bocanada, Alucinação and El Jardín de los Presentes, I was extremely excited to listen to another Latin album. In addition, a green album cover is usually a good omen. I loved the political bite of Construção. The others each built these immersive worlds with these dense sonic architectures. In contrast, this felt a little more sparse. It was a bit of guitar here, a bit of singing there. Unfortunately, my ... read more
The vocals and lyrics were fair to middling. However, oh my goodness, I have to talk about those instruments, and I’m already frustrated that I know my words won't do them justice. They weren’t just striking notes; they were sustaining these long, delicious textures. The music felt as if it was shifting yet shimmering at the same time. It was like a sonic helix spiralling and glowing in slow motion.
Polished, a little moody, full of cool electronic textures and as always, entertaining.
Well, well, well, album #66 and at last I have my first 100 rating! After listening to Alice in Chains - Dirt, if you'd told me that my first 100 would be an album by Alice in Chains, I'd have laughed and called you insane. This subverted every expectation I had. In fact, and I'm going to sound like a right judgemental, pompous prick here, but it was just yesterday I saw a man walking on the street, slightly unwashed, unshaved and unkempt, with this album on his t-shirt. ... read more
I liked how the mood of the music was the antithesis of the album cover, interesting concept. There were 2 or 3 interesting tracks however on the whole it was pretty flavourless. The piano, her voice and the other instruments lacked edge, it felt like the music approached me, flirted with the idea of dancing, but didn't, then left. The story of the album for me was that every song track left me longing for a little more catharsis.
This was my second listen. I didn't like it the first ... read more
This was shorter, more intense and more emotive than Melon Collie and The Infinite Sadness. Again, the album is very good, but then with brilliant, standout tracks that just soar so much higher than the others. The brilliant tracks are profoundly emotive, I'm talking like 100 quality, and for that it deserves a strong rating. This was preferable to Melon Collie for me on account of it being slightly shorter and the highs being a little more pronounced.
Okay, the album cover is dead cool. This album was good to sit down to and just get washed away in it for a couple of hours. It rumbled along nicely and steadily, then it was sprinkled with a corker of a track here and there. I think on balance, I love the idea of The Smashing Pumpkins more than I actually like them. It's not my favourite genre but it's an impressive work, and the highs make it worthwhile.
I listened to this but forgot to review it.
What better to say other than, even a couple of months after listening to it, it has stuck in my mind as one of my very favourites.
I really like Soda Stereo but this is the album that really opened the door for me on the potential of Latin music.
The beats, the strings, the voice, the atmosphere, the grooves, the swirls, it's all beautiful.
This is an incredibly accomplished piece.
The strings won me over. It's smooth and very gentle on the ear, but has a lovely edge to it. I looked up the lyrics and there's a lot more going on, it's clever, but it's not too heavy.
This album is desert island territory.
This will never be great for me because I don't like the vocals when they are falsely high. It has everything else, but it sounds depressing and like he's whining.
Well that was all over the place, and in a good way.
I hadn't realised until reading about this after listening that he'd literally sampled different bits of songs, moved them around a bit, basically curated them almost and presented to us an art piece.
That seems supremely talented to me. Maybe I am not seasoned enough but this is my first experience of sampling and I really liked it, totally different.
This is so majestic that I can't listen to it regularly. I am saving it for a special occasion. Maybe one day if I visit Iceland or a Fjord somewhere, it needs to be something momentous or significant, it was so grand and incredible.
