Maybe what I'm about to say is unfair, because I'm reviewing it in its cultural context and I haven't always done this with other albums, but Rumours, I’ve heard the life out of it. The big songs are everywhere; by the time I press play, I’m already done. The cover’s become a “look at my taste” badge, like Arctic Monkeys or The Smiths. It’s tight, it's polished, but that takes the edge off. It's medium tempo all the way. Not bad, just ... read more
I liked a lot about this. It’s soft and beautiful, with guitars, piano, and strings arranged in a way that makes the songs warm and authentic. Natalia has a lovely, emotive voice. It’s not the most powerful I’ve ever heard, but it's certainly lovely, and it suits the music perfectly. The album is a bit of a slow burner; you probably need to be in the right mood for it, but when you are, it’s no chore at all. It just misses the sweet spot for me though. I like my ... read more
After a strong intro, there were a few moments early on this album where I was worried that the vocals were going to be just too mardy, whiny and self-pitying for me to enjoy it. Thankfully, despite my worries it didn't tip into that territory at all. Actually, the way the artist segments the vocals with the compact melodies and strings made this a fantastic listen. The second half of the final track, Basketball Shoes was the icing on the cake, what a release. And this is coming from ... read more
Imogen Heap is pure quality. She drags you in one direction, then slows the pace so you can take it all in. Then suddenly she whisks you away again! All the while, layers of wonderful sounds dance in the background. She knows exactly what she’s doing, and every choice is deliberate. As much as I love this, her solo album probably just shades it for me, but I do really, really like this.
This is raw and chaotic which is to be admired. That said, most tracks share the same full-throttle pace and although I don't mind that necessarily, I find it more satisfying if the chaos is segmented a little. That way it feels more organised, deliberate and satisfying. I also thought her voice was strained all the through, which after a while numbed me to the listening experience. I'd say this album was reasonable, but not great.
I really like this. It’s fun and composed all the way through, with a great interplay between the guitars, bass, drums and Cerati’s voice. I don’t speak Spanish, so I can’t comment on the lyrics, but his voice is distinctive.
However, it’s also frustrating. On a continuum from boring, to okay, to fun, to euphoric, Canción Animal sits between fun and euphoric for its entire run. It feels deliberate - never dull, never fully ecstatic. I kept waiting for it to ... read more
I appreciate how different this is and the energy. However, I really didn't like the vocals. It's a shame as it's really impossible to enjoy an album if you don't like their voice, even if the quality is good.
This felt quite uplifting. Maybe it lacks a little edge, it's not supreme quality. However, it was jangly and interesting in places.
The worst Daft Punk song is Get Lucky. I've always hated that song ever since it was released. What is Pharrell Williams doing on this album? He's a pretender!
If I was sent to a desert album by my torturer they'd send me with anything produced by Bruno Mars and the single Get Lucky. The rest of it is really good.
83 user score is a little harsh, this is as good as any offering in this genre in my opinion. Ogni canzone è bella ed ellettrica, con un ritmo eccelente!
It's not the kind of thing I could imagine singing along to but it's a brilliantly eerie and immersive world. I was hooked listening to it, it's very interesting.
I'll be honest, musically, I didn't like this that much. I liked it but it was more mood than melody and the songs sounded very similar to me, without many hooks or much structure, although some of the experimentation did bring up some interesting sounds.
I appreciate paying homage to the man and the legend. Perhaps I'm being unfair to judge an album while divorcing it from the immense significance of the context in which it was released but I dunno, if it was standalone or if ... read more
The community is more or less spot on with this rating. This album is polished, clean and overall an impressive piece of work. It's a good, atmospheric, quality production. If I had to say something critical, I would have liked it to be a little more intense in places. I might not listen again but I can appreciate it for what it was.
This was a mix of pleasure and meh for me. There were one or two tracks where I thought yeah that's really good, but that wasn't all the way through. On the whole I'd say I liked the production and the concept but it didn't quite hit that sweet spot. Shame!
I can't deny that she has good vocals. I was hearing something between Lauryn Hill and Amy Winehouse. However, I think that's the downfall of this album. She has a fantastic voice but I don't feel its uniqueness or originality. I could be wrong but going on the above and my overall enjoyment of this album, I certainly can't rate it 80 or above.
I went for a run last night and this album was the ideal companion. The punchy riffs and rolling beats were in sync with every stride, and my mind was at one with the music, totally focused on every delicious note that was unravelling before me.
And honestly I feel like every time I listen to PJ Harvey, it just gets better, richer and more immersive, as my brain maps it even more. Her music is fantastic.
This was fun and occupies a great niche.
It's quite glitchy, the sound reminds a little of Sweet Trip, but there's more going on than just that. Recommend!
I don’t speak Portuguese, but Chico Buarque’s Construção was a brilliant listen. The music pulses so well, I was gutted when the 31 minutes ended.
When I looked up the lyrics, that just added to the album’s brilliance. It tells everyday stories, workers heading home, carnival rhythms, quietly chipping away at an authoritarian regime.
This album landed in my life at a good time time. I’ve been grappling with how to stay true to my leftist values while ... read more
