Gilberto Gil - Um Banda Um
88

critic score 50 is crazy this is pretty great. it does sound a bit of its time but i honestly find that quite charming. its fun and bubbly and smooth while still finding room to be emotionally touching. great music for windows down road trips. those tropical drums always get me in a groove. i have noticed a lot of younger people in the u.s getting into jazz fusion and takanaka and stuff and i feel like mpb might be next mark my words

fav song: pula caminha
fav moment: chorus of pula caminha

Various Artists - Tropicália ou Panis et Circencis
95

when in conversation about art being used as a form of resistance, this is one of the first pieces i use as an example. any music history lover worth their salt ought to do some research on tropicália because it is so fascinating and such a prime example of how music can hold such great importance to a location's history and culture. and even separated from that, the music here is just fantastic. stacked with so much talent.

fav song: miserere nobis
fav moment: chorus of miserere ... read more

album club pick 4/30/26-5/6/26

guy whos listened to 1 beatles song: you gotta hear come together
guy whos listened to 100 beatles songs: you gotta hear the unreleased quarrymen demo "the ballad of sneezing steve", only recorded on a 7" located in pete best's left buttcheek
guy whos listened to 1000 beatles songs: you GOTTA listen to come together

since its my pick for my album club this week i should probably write a serious review lol (i almost did rubber soul since ... read more

George Riley - Running in Waves

neat little r&b project that plays with genre in some interesting ways. nothing thatll blow your socks off but its nice! ill have to check out her newer stuff, i havent listened to anything else of hers yet. electric guitar on an r&b record is seldom a bad move.

fav song: time
fav moment: the guitar in time is yummyyyy

Geese - 3D Country
89

the worst guy you know loves this album (in a good way)

this thing grabs you by the neck from the first line and never really lets go. getting killed is great, but this one just hits way harder for me personally. i find that is rings more as a collaborative band project, whereas sometimes GK can feel like "cameron and co." i also just adore how zany and fun the whole thing is, they just let them get in the studio and do whatever and it came out great. creativity let loose in the best ... read more

Geese - Getting Killed
87

dear universe i will bump this to 100 if you let me get tix to the getting killed again tour pleek

one of the rare-ish albums where the hit song is actually my least fav on the whole thing lol, but i really enjoyed this as a whole! feels very experimental and off-beat (not literally musically off-beat, i mean like unique) in a way i enjoy. every listen you hear a new instrument or other sonic layer to the songs, which does wonders for replay value. very polished without losing personality. ... read more

Elton John - Regimental Sgt. Zippo
82

telling my kids this was sgt peppers lonely hearts club band

thank you @shayden for the recommendation!! i actually wasnt aware he released this until i saw your review of it lol.

i was originally joking about the sgt peppers thing, but the more i listened, the more i realized that this really is elton john does the beatles. not necessarily a bad thing, a lot of musicians around this time absorbed their style, but its interesting to hear elton's voice before he really developed his own ... read more

Prince and The Revolution - Purple Rain
100

saw a rerelease of the purple rain film in theaters with my mom yesterday and it was such a blast. nobody else showed up so we talked and danced and sang in the theater (i guess everyone was seeing the MJ movie lol) and it was such a great reminder of how music is meant to bring people together <3 also im not into dudes but prince was toooo damn fine in that movie i get why girls were losing their minds over him back then omfg.

anyway onto the album itself, this thing is such a landmark of ... read more

Gal Costa - Gal Costa
92

it makes me so sad when people i know who love music still neglect to listen to any foreign language music because they're missing out on gems like this.

gal has such a wonderful voice. the melodies are beautiful and the whole record feels so cohesive. a more psychedelic spin on tropicalia that is so unique i just adore it. creates such a lush and sunshine-y atmosphere. oh and that percussion is SPECTACULARR

fav song: sebastiana (hi gil <3)
fav moment: chorus of sebastiana

Future Teens - Hard Feelings
79

does anyone else think the guy on the top left looks like a baby joseph gordon levitt lmao

very much in that sad, scrappy, modern baseball type of indie rock. so if youre into that, youll be into this! love the consistent theming of insecurity and it manifesting itself in tumultuous relationships (or lack thereof). in love or whatever hits a little too close to home lmao. a record that shows a lot of great potential, ill have to go and listen to some of their newer stuff, its been a hot second ... read more

Funkadelic - Maggot Brain
94

its kinda funk, but its kinda, like, psychedelic too... what could we possibly call it..........

soooo influential, so epic, and so ahead of its time. george clinton is a once in a generation genius. listening to this album is also where i discovered that the song rill rill by sleigh bells is actually built off a sample (embarrassed to not know of that before but I digress). this record is just such a fun exploration of genre and sound, it colored outside the lines on what rock was, what funk ... read more

Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand
84

this sounds so modern from a guy who died over a century ago, well done!

jk this is a fun rock record, very cheeky and never taking itself too seriously. oozes cool. the clean guitar work and catchy melodies make it hard to forget. a lot of indie rock records like this run the risk of sounding very same-y, but the melodies and tone of each song make them each unique, but still flow together quite well. also one of the first cds I ever bought when I made the switch from vinyl so that's ... read more

Frank Sinatra - The World We Knew
92

50 critic score and 75 user score am i missing something??? this is beautiful what the hell. the first 5 tracks absolutely knock it out of the park, what a run!! theres a mild quality dip in the next few songs, but some enchanted evening picks it up for a spectacular finale. my only mild critique would be the length, it rings in at shy of half an hour, but i understand that was typical of the time. perfect music for a moonlit walk through new york city. it somehow balances sounding so intimate ... read more

Frank Ocean - Blonde
89

one time i was at karaoke and this guy sang white ferrari but he didnt know any of the words and it totally ruined the vibe at the time but i commend him for having a tender heart and an artists spirit.

didnt quite resonate with me as much as channel orange, but still absolutely beautiful what a tearjerker. deserves the hype. the comparatively stripped back sound helps convey the messages of longing and personal reflection, but it did make it less of my personal sonic cup of tea than his last ... read more

Frank Ocean - channel ORANGE

ITS BETTER THAN BLONDE THERE I SAID IT!!!! frank is probably top 5 male vocalists of the century for me i can't lie. this album is just so full of raw confessional storytelling. i can't believe people were so shocked he was queer they truly must have listened to bad religion with their ears closed. its not too stripped down, but not too complex so as to decenter his stellar vocal performance. i think the smooth, psychedelic vibe works so well with his voice. what I love most about ... read more

Foxy Shazam - Foxy Shazam

I must confess, when i was little and I heard eric nally singing on downtown by macklemore I always assumed he was an older woman singing LMAO. i don't think he'd be offended (though he did say he doesn't like all the hipsters calling him gay, so...)

anyway this record is so much fun. they let him in the studio and was like do whatever you want king. and he did. its so weird and quirky and unique. the keyboards are nice, and his voice is unlike any other, for better or worse ... read more

Florence + the Machine - Everybody Scream

"sung by florence welch, written by mitski, produced by aaron dessner" oh so you want me to die. to die dead and never live again. ok i get it.

i am beyond excited to see her on this upcoming tour ahhhh!!!! anyway this album is great, it really felt like a record for the fans rather than the critics (though it was very well received by critics it seems). it fully leans into that witchy vibe even more so than previous records, kind of carrying over that darker vibe from dance fever ... read more

Florence + the Machine - Dance Fever

one of those albums that came out right when i needed it, dance fever can honestly rival lungs in my eyes (which is a huge compliment, i love that album more than i love the real lungs in my own body). this has the reflective, confessional lyricism that could only be done by an album written in quarantine. more than any of her past songs ive heard, she has a way of just. portraying particular emotional experiences with surgical precision. have i ever been an alcoholic? no. do I still tear up ... read more

Florence + the Machine - Ceremonials
91

CHILLS CHILLS FULL BODY CHILLS she is so good at what she does. definitely a more lush and confident follow up to lungs. the use of that full choir is such a spectacular choice it fits her sound so so well (though it does occasionally give me flashbacks to being dragged to mass as a kid LMAO). hearing shake it out live is going to heal something deep deep down inside of me. her vocals are arguably more impressive on this record than on lungs, but why pit 2 bad bitches against eachotherrrrr. ... read more

album club pick 5/13/26-5/20/26

one of my top streamed albums of all time, i used to just listen to this all the way through every single day when i was like 16 (not that long ago lol but still). obvi im nostalgia biased but i cannot fathom a single flaw with this perfect masterpiece of an album. one of my top 5 favorite debut albums. the songwriting is so rich and well structured, any time one could remotely feel like its getting repetitive, she tosses in a new melody, new layer of ... read more
