Donovan - Sunshine Superman
98

sighhhh donovan you will own my heart forever and ever. my local thrift store used to play the title track all the time and i would always point it out to my sister who did not gaf lol. anyway this thing is just sooooo whimsical and dreamy and intimate. so many classics what do i even have to say. donovans voice was made for this psychedelic vibe, and the songwriting is so... gentle and kind. it feels like youre in the studio. hearing celeste for the first time made me tear up i cant lie ... read more

The Donnas - Spend the Night

kind of hollow, kind of samey, kind of lyrically dumb, but still a whole lot of fun. im such a sucker for that cool rocker chick vibe i can pretty easily gloss over its flaws. spiritually im at a house party in 2002 with these songs blasting, physically stuck on my couch in 2026 </3. love these ladies!! if you want this vibe but with more substance and commentary, obviously youre gonna go to another band like bikini kill or something first. this is for when u wanna see some rocker girls ... read more

Don McLean - American Pie
99

the fact that hes been relegated to one hit wonder status is ABSOLUTELY CRIMINAL. obviously american pie is the big centerpiece of the album, but the rest of the songs are just as spectacular (maybe even better). just a fantastic mix of stellar folk tracks, catchy and intelligent songwriting, fantastic guitar work, and a pure love for the art of music. i could be easily swayed to say vincent is the most beautiful song ever written. everybody loves me baby is perhaps my favorite anti-war song ... read more

Doja Cat - Scarlet

sure its hit or miss but when this came out i remember people acting like she released absolute irredeemable slop, presumably fueled by her... interesting attempts to advertise it. but there are a lot of really fun, punchy rap tunes on this! while i love her poppy stuff the girl can rap. a couple misses on an otherwise fun project. i really enjoy the production. i was obsessed with attention when it came out it was my song of the summer

this might be better than hot pink objectively, but there's just a touch less personality on this one than hot pink i fear (or maybe a touch less nostalgia for me). i actually didnt like woman when it first came out but ive warmed up to it. suuuper bright and yummy production here, and the beats are great. dojas flow and skill as a rapper sometimes get overshadowed by how deeply she leans into the pop aesthetics, which is a damn shame because she has such talent. i understand why she went ... read more

planet her may have been her sales peak but THIIIIS is prime doja cat to me. one of the first rap albums i really loved before getting into rap. its so bubblegum pink pop fun, instant seretonin booster omfg. and her writing is so funny sometimes shes pretty clever on this one. kind of a nostalgia rating since this was my shit back in the day, but i think if i listened to it for the first time today id still love it.

Doechii - Oh The Places You'll Go
77

i have a confession to make. i was not put on doechii by tiktok or her grammy nom. i discovered her through obama putting persuasive on his 2022 songs of the summer LMAO. i had never heard her name so i gave persuasive a listen, liked it, went back to this ep (the most recent project at the time), also liked it, and forgot about her until she got real famous. this shows a lot of potential but she'll definitely grow from here. yucky blucky fruitcake is classic, and is high quality enough ... read more

Doechii - Alligator Bites Never Heal

a record so bubbling with personality, nobody else could have made this (in the best way possible). only minor critiques were that it felt a little long and started to drag a bit around the more downtempo tracks for me personally (though they are all great songs individually). her flow is so fun and satisfying to listen to, lots of interesting ideas and influences played with here. i particularly enjoy how open she is to taking cues from early 90s rap and boom bap, denial is a river in ... read more

dodie - Human

"she" is a classic first of all. this ep definitely sends me into a different time of my life, very much a pillar of the shy cutesy indie pop scene. the minimal strings and heavy emphasis on her voice in the mixing make a very soft and intimate vibe. it doesnt do anything crazy but its great for what it is.

fav song: burned out (went triple platinum in my house in 2019)
fav moment: "it slips through her cracks, so i start to choke"

D'Lourdes - D’LOURDES
78

just checked their spotify for the first time in forever and they released a christmas version of HDYGSG??? LMAO???? what the hell sure

anyway, the genre blending can make it feel a little disjointed (felt like half an rnb and half a rock album diced together), and the rap(?) section in the opener makes me cringe slightly, but other than that this is really good!! the vocal performance in songs like wait for me and LIFTW is soo great. i wish it was a little longer to flesh out the ideas at ... read more

Dizzy Fae - Free Form Mixtape

underrated gem alert! janelle monae fans hop on this please. a quirky and fun rnb record that does plenty of experimentation without straying too far from the classic smoothness you go to rnb for. the little elements of dance pop infused into tracks like johnny bravo and baby pillz add a lot of color, but she still have classic tracks to show off her vocal chops and incredibly emotive voice. i wish she stayed in her lower register a little more, its where i think she shines, but a great ... read more

Diva Bleach - No Fun

I remember listening to this cuz i saw these girls advertising it on tiktok and thinking they were super cool when I was 15 (and upon regoogling them they are still cool lol). upon relisten this is pretty fleshed out for an ep! it captures the era of music they're going for to a tee, reminds me a lot of story of the year. but if story of the year were cool gay girls who live on tiktok. awesome!

fav song: circles
fav moment: TAAAKE MY HEART NOWWWW

Dirty Bynum - Moth Man
68

looking at spotify it seems like this guy dropped this, a short album that underperformed, and dropped off the face of the earth; that's unfortunate cuz this ep shows a lot of potential! is it odd to say I kind of get a matchbox 20 vibe lol. I think people just listened to moth man in 2020 for the haha of it being about moth man but I legit like some of the ideas here. ill have to listen to that album he dropped the following year some time, I hope he evolved and cleaned up the sound he ... read more

Devon Cole - 1-800-GOT-STRESS

listened to this because i heard witch and really enjoyed it, unfortunately the rest of the ep was okay but not quite as catchy. its some silly cute pop but doesn't do anything interesting enough to entertain. the first 3 songs are decent background noise, and the closer is a banger.

fav song: witch
fav moment: I like the "lalalalalalala"s in witch

Descendents - Milo Goes to College
76

when I visited the punk museum in vegas, they had an old descendents guitar in their guitar room that I got to hold, and when I tell you I was GEEKING OUTTTTTTT. there's a picture of me holding it like guys on tinder hold a large fish with the biggest, nerdiest grin on my face (I also got to hold joan jett and vic fuentes' guitars, super cool place!!!)

the strongest element of this album is the historical value, a lot of modern punk/pop-punk bands indisputably would not be here ... read more

Depeche Mode - Violator

normalize naming your kid after a 10/10 album!!

violator is like a rich beautiful bite of dark chocolate, so gritty but still has that bit of sweetness that brings you in. that deep echoey mixing is so atmospheric i could just live inside this album. the combination of both synths and traditional guitar work/other instrumentation is so seamless. this is also the band shirt I receive the least "name 3 songs" accusations about, because depeche mode fans are very kind in my experience ... read more

if there was a guinness world record for most hours spent listening to this album while playing tony hawks pro skater 2, i would go home with the gold

please do yourself a favor and read through all the samples on this thing, its jam packed with fascinating sample choices; they used everyone from the isley brothers to hall and oates. if I could only listen to one hip hop album for the rest of my life, it'd be this! the beats are energetic and have this beautiful vintage quality to them. ... read more

David Bowie - "Heroes"

this is one where ill probably change my rating once I give it a few more listens through, since i've only listened through like twice, but this just didn't hit the highs of low for me (no pun intended). heroes is one of my fav songs ever so I gotta give it that but the more ambient tracks (7-9) kinda dragged for me (well crafted but bored me, ranges from cartoon dracula's castle to meditation stock music). that being said, the front half of the album is amazing and just more ... read more

David Bowie - Station to Station

its such an odd dissonance to know how much he was struggling and how badly his addiction was eating him alive when he made this, because its absolutely one of his best works. bowie getting into his funk is one of the best things that ever happened in his entire career. its a damn shame he entirely forgot making this. you would think an album that's 40 minutes and only 6 tracks would drag, but it seldom does (maybe a bit in the first track, but I also just have a phone-rotted attention ... read more

David Bowie - Low

this album has my absolute favorite bowie song on it (sound and vision), so obviously it deserves a fantastic score. I remember listening to this for the first time expecting an album full of songs like sound and vision, and while it certainly became Not that, it was beautiful nonetheless. i love how expressive and experimental he got during the berlin trilogy. im usually not one for ambient music, but some of the tracks on the back half (the more ambient part) are ones I find myself coming ... read more
