Somewhere between Heat Waves going viral and the making of Creatures Of Heaven, Glass Animals seem to have pressed the “Lose All Musical Identity” button. Oops!
From Ariana Grande to Grande Mahogany! This is some groovy stuff. Smooth, psychedelic guitar work combined with infectious, fast-moving drums and some unique vocal inflections. ‘SUPER ROCKER’ is a particular highlight and a track I just adore the effortless coolness of. Worth a listen, and most definitely worth keeping an eye on this guy.
It doesn’t take that long to realise there’s no point in ever listening to or thinkng about I LUV IT. You don’t even need to get to the Carti verse, really.
I’m not quite sure where all the punk and pop punk comparisons are coming from- for me, this is pretty steadfastly indie rock- and tbh Brad wasn’t wrong in that instrumentally Next Semester does sound like the type of song you’d get on a 00s iPod ad. Now, I tend to quite like the songs you’d get on a 00s iPod ad, so there’s that, but I also think that the lyrics make it a clear and obvious cut above something like Are You Gonna Be My Girl or Jerk It Out. The ... read more
Whilst Eternal Sunshine does start out as a fun slice of disco revivalism on the opening track- and obvious album highlight- ‘Bye’, past that it becomes a somewhat dull affair, serving up polished, pedestrian dance-pop jams which lack substance or personality. Sure, the album isn’t abysmal or even distinctly bad, but Ariana’s done much better than this.
I was won over pretty quickly by the lush texture and dreamy, soft grooves of Humans. It’s a really sweet track.
If you ever wanted a thang to put in action, well, Give It 2 U has you covered…
It would be *Hyperbolic* to suggest there’s anything memorable about this new PNAU record. Ha ha ha, ha ha, ha ha. No but seriously this is one of the most by-the-numbers albums I’ve heard in a while. It is deeply inoffensive, takes no risks at all and only seems interested in offering up extremely basic dance-pop with no real flavour added or risks taken beyond the occasional cool featured artist (anyone else missed Empire Of The Sun?). I suppose it’s not a bad album, but to ... read more
My new big crazy opinion is that Hey Mama’s probably the most entertaining thing David Guetta’s made if you can ignore the… weird servant fantasy shit in the verses.
Porter Robinson releases Cheerleader, and thus singlehandedly validates music as a concept.
In other words it’s pretty cool
I mean, I don’t think Days Of Girlhood is totally void of positives. The ‘hold our beer’ line is cute and I think the instrumental is a fun callback to a now mostly bygone era of pop music. It’s just Dylan’s inability to keep up with the song’s energy that really ruins it for me.
How To Make A Master Peace is a valiant attempt to try and recapture some the magic of the late 2000s-early 2010s UK indie rock/‘indie sleaze’ scene. Master Peace brings an excellent, infectious energy to tracks like ‘Start You Up’ or ‘GET NAUGHTY !’ plus the production on the album is really commendable- dirty and wild at points but never amateurish or slapdash. However, I think where How To Make A Master Peace falters most is that Peace doesn’t do ... read more
i just thought of the funniest joke ever holy shit you guys are gonna go crazy
Two Door Cinema Club play to their strengths and deliver one of their best singles in ages in Happy Customers, a track which could have easily come out of their prime 2010s period.
The first half of Get Off The Internet is a delight as Eliminate deftly wields and melds genres such as hyperpop, brostep and electro house to create some of the most thrilling and exciting electronic music released this year. Unfortunately the second half is not nearly as interesting, and it kind of feels like after ‘MOREPWR’ a lot of the best ideas on this album have been and gone. There’s not much in the way of true low points, but ‘Playing With Fire’ or ... read more
Both of the singers on Mia Khalifa have extremely punchable faces, and I haven’t even seen a picture of them yet
Ignoring the brief but hamfisted trap section, Overkill is- from both a lyrical and instrumental standpoint- Mori’s most interesting single yet.
The Back Room is… solid. I mean, I liked it. The instrumentals are consistently well put together and watertight, the vocals are nice and refined, and the lyrics, while nothing to write home about, aren’t particularly bad either. I quite liked ‘Munich’. So yeah, The Back Room, it’s pretty good… but it just wasn’t all that exciting to me! Like, I enjoyed the album- I’d be lying if I gave it a less-than-positive score, but at no point did I feel ... read more
