Laura Marling - Patterns in Repeat
84

Being a sorrowful rendition of Laura's traumatic experiences, Patterns In Repeat is a continued telling of hitting those emotional beats from a very personal source of anguish. The emptiness is a highlighted moment throughout this record to truly make us feel the bleakness of her situation. It leaves you saddened on the use of soft-sounding lullabies, bringing into an uncomfortable situation that fills a gaping void caused by such ripples of the sadness.

Laura Marling - Short Movie
92

I am a longtime fan of Laura Marling's discography, and out of every one of her projects, Short Movie manages to be my favorite output from her. It's raw, personal and deep-rooted. The acoustics blend so well with the vocals, melting together like a pile of sweet syrup drizzling onto your emotional state. It holds itself back on a lot of production choices it could have introduced, but instead stands in its simplest form. Less becomes more and you're given track after track of ... read more

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Yr. Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven!
96

What a groundbreaking record, not only for the post-rock genre, but for music as a whole. It is so enriched with spacial ambience that you have to make a double-take on whether you're still listening to this album in the comfort of your own home. It draws you away from any semblance of normalcy from your surrounding space and transports you into another realm. It's downright daunting how contradictory it can feel, in a sort of unsettling ease kind of way. It's within its own ... read more

Magdalena Bay - Imaginal Disk
88

A step-up from their debut, Magdalena Bay expands on their retro synthpop format and cusps a more polished and varied set of tracks that flow over you like a serene river housing colorful fish of all shapes and sizes. Imaginal Disks really highlights the "imaginal" part greatly, as in we're the test subject imagining their vivid playground of addicting hooks, catchy tempos and mesmerizing vocals. It's all-out-attack of interesting production choices that while chaotic on the ... read more

Magdalena Bay - Mercurial World
85

An all-around honest fun album that you could endlessly groove to whenever you see fit. This project is loaded with hit after hit, dullness is simply a nonexistent term. The soundscape is a soothing and mystic synthpop instrumental laired with chilled and velvet-like vocal performances. It pays homage to the past era of dance pop and the various artists that helped build the stage for our current era to pay our respects. It simultaneously has a blast from the past while feeling fresh in ... read more

Women - Public Strain
91

A mix of intricate punk elements blending with a soaring clash of instrumentals, that go above and beyond the surface. There is no roof, it just keeps on soaring and delivering so well. There's not a single dull spot on this album, it plays into the listeners hand as if to say that we have control on something spontaneous. It's definitely a grower the more listens you give it, like a tug on a rope that starts weak for keeps getting tighter and stronger. It's certainly tugged onto ... read more

Mercury Rev - Deserter's Songs
81

A very solid output from Mercury Rev, topped with fragrant orchestral and accompanied by husky vocals. It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it definitely has a special place in my heart. This album could be the centerpiece of a musical play and I wouldn't bat an eye. It makes for a very emotionally moving listen. Main drawback is how certain tracks aren't on a same level as the big listens like Holes and Goddess on a Hiway, making it quite lopsided. Still, it holds up very ... read more

múm - Finally We Are No One
86

This is a project you want to keep safe and nurtured, it's got a very calming and precious production behind it. The ambience within this Folktronica album really do it justice, there's like a mythical sensation tagged onto the use of instrumentals and luscious vocal performance. It brings yourself to an open flower field, the gentle breeze flowing over, the petals dancing in the sky in front of a blight blue horizon. It's magical in its own right, I recommend at least one listen ... read more

The Olivia Tremor Control - Black Foliage: Animation Music Volume One
83

There's a lot to unpack with Black Foliage. It's got interesting instrumentals and soundscape that may defer listeners a little, but it can just as easily get you hooked. The Psychedelic Pop attributes carry out a whimsical experience that can leave you in a trance, and the vocals pay resemblance to 60s rock bands. It's a wind of nostalgia and bold risks, quite a unique combination that strangely works in it favor.

The Avalanches - We Will Always Love You
79

We Will Always Love You is an endearing contract from The Avalanches discography, as they welcome features to elevate the conventional strip of this album. There are many bright spots splattered across this project to varying degrees, it can feel a bit too messy with certain songs and production choices, however it still proudly stands as a fun and unique listen nonetheless.

The Avalanches - Wildflower
79

Wildflower exerts all kinds of energy through it's sheer genius sound mixing. It has a few drawbacks where it's unable to carry a wave of big momentous occasions in various points of the big track list nearly as well as it's previous album Since I Left You. However it's still an interesting overflow of groovy and ear-catching craftsmanship.

Favorite Tracks: Because I'm Me, Frankie Sinatra, If I Was a Folkstar[❤️], Sunshine, Saturday Night Inside Out

The Avalanches - Since I Left You
94

Music has always been a form of art, and no less does the clever usage of samples across multiple forms of sound media to create such musical artistry. Since I Left You is a story in of itself, as you hear the progression from one track to the next, you're left in awe on how such an accomplishment can work so well as an enjoyable listen. It's both fascinating and melancholic. The album doesn't stagnate; it fluctuates from soothing wonders to an uproar of sound mixing throughout ... read more

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Californication
58

Californication is a national record for beach lovers, summer travelers and chill gatherings. It's undeniable how influential it has become on rock culture, however, revisiting this record has shown its major weak points over time. The album gives off a nice and safe feeling, however it rapidly loses its shine after repeated listen as you're met with subpar vocals and weak harmonies on certain tracks, especially evident in the latter half of the album. The iconic hits are great, some ... read more

Broken Social Scene - You Forgot It in People
96

What feels like a hot summer evening at the music festival can come an outburst of fun, emotional and psyched up endeavors. That's what listening to You Forgot It In People feels like. It still sounds fresh and challenging to the overcrowded Indie Rock genre. What propels this album over most other outputs is its vital spirit and interchangeable tracks that complement one another. It shifts its style continuously as you await each of its excitable output one after another. An album that ... read more

of Montreal - Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?
81

The vocals from Kevin Barnes really add another layer of transitional fun to an already exciting psychedelic pop output. Certain tracks stick out to grad the listeners attention in such a fascinating light. But what I think deserves the most attention are the lyrics, they're well thought over and become a sentimental attribute for the album.

Favorite Tracks: Suffer For Fashion, Cato As A Pun, A Sentence Of Sorts In Kongsvinger, The Past Is A Grotesque Animal [❤️]

Holy Wave - Interloper
82

It's a very solid psychedelic rock album with tracks that either leave you in a trance, or ones that have your head bopping to the beat. The lighthearted tones can leave me coming back to this project from time to time, it's all-in-all a "good times" needed feeling at the right place and the right time.

Favorite Tracks: Schmetterling, Interloper, Escapism, Redhead [❤️]

Portishead - Dummy
100

An album that is fantastic on first listen, and the more you re-listen to it, the better it gets. The elements of tip hop compliment the desperate setting the lyricism paints across the album. The sadness hits you like a bullet, and you're left to suffer through the rigid pain. It's mesmerizing how the motifs of sadness are pieced together so eloquently, yet they rush over you like a cascading waterfall. You really don't know what to do with yourself after it's all over, the ... read more

Kleg - Eating and Sleeping (#15)
93

An album that picks at you and takes away your safety and comport. But you don't know you're a victim of theft until it's too late. What a daunting experience, like a grudge that lingers onto you and gluttons you up because it's irresistible. When you jump into this album, the plague it will soon plunge you into sort of creeps up over time, it's not obvious until you find yourself deep into its listen and anxiously await to see how it draws to a conclusion. That's ... read more

Yndi Halda - Enjoy Eternal Bliss
96

A beautiful rendition of post-rock anthems, flowing from a slow burn that gets coaxed in warming acoustics to a flash of fire that brightens the atmosphere in what I can describe as sonic beauty.

Kairon; IRSE! - Ujubasajuba
99

There's no breaks on this album. You're on a ride that keeps on delivering utter frenzy onto your ears. A 50 minute album that's over in what feels like a click of the finger. A fleeting moment in what felt like seconds was really a mesmeric display of euphoria. Damn, this is good.
