Ariana Grande - thank u, next
78

thank u, next is definitely a strong pop album, but it doesn't offer much in terms of variety.

SPELLLING - Mazy Fly
92

mazy fly is a breathtaking album, with very dramatic melodies that are heightened by its production, which makes it sound like an old film soundtrack from an alien planet. i was hooked all the way through, being kept on my toes by its constant curveballs.

Uffie - Tokyo Love Hotel
91

tokyo love hotel is an astonishing return from uffie, and it doesn't disappoint. even though its production and themes are a lot more current than on her previous album, it still manages to stand out against most other electropop releases.

Uffie - Sex Dreams and Denim Jeans
100

fuck it, i have come to the conclusion that sex dreams and denim jeans is the most important album in regards to the music of the 2010s. it's an adventure that draws inspiration from everything from underground electronic music to nu-disco music to siouxsie and the banshees, and it's unapologetically in-your-face the entire time, much like the mainstream pop music that followed it. its production is very forward-thinking considering the time it came from, and many of its hooks are extremely ... read more

Julia Jacklin - Crushing

crushing is great for the first four songs, and then it just makes me feel bad for listening to the rest of it.

COUCOU CHLOE - Naughty Dog
82

coucou chloe is one of the most interesting figures in electronic music thanks to her deadpan delivery and dark instrumentals, and naughty dog takes these qualities to a whole new level.

Mega Bog - Dolphine
71

i want to like this a lot more than i actually do, or used to, because it's another soft indie release that i normally fall head over heels for, but there aren't enough captivating moments on here to keep me engaged.

Sui Zhen - Losing, Linda
74

losing, linda is kind of disappointing when compared to sui zhen's previous album, secretly susan, since it feels a lot more monotonous and less explorative than it, although there are a few genuinely great songs.

Angel Olsen - All Mirrors

this is so dreamy and atmospheric, but also doesn't hold my interest for that long when i listen to it.

on grey area, little simz creates a captivating rap album that's both consistent and intriguing.

100 gecs - 1000 gecs
91

1000 gecs is an album that nobody should like, with obnoxious vocals, instrumentals, and lyrics. however, it's probably the most effective amalgamation of these qualities in recent times, turning them into a must-hear spectacle that isn't boring, isn't unbearable, and, most importantly, isn't bad at all.

Jessica Pratt - Quiet Signs

this is one of the most atmospheric folk releases i've heard all year, and it has all the variety and calmness it needs to make it work.

Tamaryn - Dreaming The Dark
82

i'm a huge fan of synthpop most of the time, and this album does a great job of channeling 80s energy into a modern setting. i can easily imagine most of its songs being from that era, and that's a very good thing.

Ecco2k - E
88

i have to say that i was very mistaken about this album. on multiple subsequent listens, the thing has grown on me and i've come to appreciate it more than i used to. ecco2k's voice is probably my favorite thing on earth, since he sounds so calming despite a lot of the subject matter on the album. they're enhanced so much by the dreamy instrumentals and heavy repetition, getting lost and mystified by the album.

Zarya - 18 Y\O
64

again with the languages i don't speak! regardless, i'm not really a fan of how this album fuses edm with bubblegum bass, since a lot of the time it just sounds like it's trying too hard to sound futuristic.

Rakky Ripper - Neptune Diamond
83

i wish i spoke spanish so i could understand what's going on on this album, since it's a catchy, more traditional bubblegum bass effort that doesn't have a bad moment on it.

galen tipton - nightbath
80

this electronic fever dream pushes bubblegum bass into a darker direction, although it still maintains the bouncy production that makes the genre fun to listen to.

春ねむり [HARU NEMURI] - 春と修羅 [Haru to shura]
82

this album is stunning, even if i don't understand the lyrics. the implementation of rock music into j-pop is a really unique idea, and this album pulls it off incredibly well.

Kishi Bashi - Lighght
80

this album gives us thrilling chamber pop that isn't afraid to take risks, incorporating some bits of electronic production that sound fine for the most part, as well as upbeat melodies that are a nice to listen to.

Gabby Young & Other Animals - The Band Called Out for More
95

while checking out some cabaret albums, i stumbled across this one, and its cover interested me. after listening to its first track, "in your head," i was instantly hooked by its catchiness and instrumentation. these aspects carry on throughout the album, and made for a very vivacious listen that kept me interested throughout. toward the back end of this album, it takes a dark turn that only enhances its sound and builds to a grand, show-stopping finale.
