The New York trio have made an album almost bursting with ideas, one that, given the time, you’ll want to live with for months to come.

The Skinny
On the third record, DARKSIDE are happy to remain unfixed, bumping between fun and familiar grooves with an element of chaos.

Northern Transmissions

Nothing is an experiment into building a record from free-form elements and distorting them to the edge of recognition. It embraces the unexpected, dismantling genre tropes and twisting them into something entirely its own.

Pitchfork
Guided by the idea of wiping the slate clean, Nicolás Jaar and Dave Harrington’s third album is a raw, surprisingly funky, desperately hopeful response to the chaos of the 2020s.

Uncut

Darkside opens up on Nothing with a playfully weird set of baroque pop that takes in bluesy '70s skanking and cavernous grooves.

Mojo
There's a formlessness to the greater endeavour that ensures it's somehow less than its constituent parts. Still, the likes of subterranean Latin shuffle American Reference possess an invention and mystery that makes this an endlessly fascinating place to get lost.

The Needle Drop

Nothing's unpredictability is a double-edged sword.

The musical quality and innovative ideas at the heart of these works are undeniable, and Darkside have clearly poured a lot of inspiration into the album. Ultimately, though, its lack of cohesion makes for a sluggish listening experience.

In true Nicolas Jaar fashion, ‘Nothing’ is highly detailed in the way of production, and DARKSIDE’s grooves add a lot to the intricate atmospheres crafted throughout the record. The singles released beforehand were masterful with the way their funky instrumentals bounced all over the mix, but I found the full record to be lacking that same energy at times. That didn’t stop most of it from being enjoyable though!

One of Jaar's more rockist releases, it also takes some upbeat cues from the A.A.L project.

That's a good combo in my book, this one gets straight to the groove and mostly maintains it.

Solid little dark and murky electronic album from Darkside here, nothing mind blowing, but still solid overall.

Good dancey background music. It's upbeat approach keeps the rock music light and surface level. Not too much to return to or high moments. It feels like the album stands stronger as a whole listen.

Welcome back, Daft Punk!

Now, I know this doesn't sound exactly like Daft Punk, but I always envisioned a new album of theirs to sound almost like this. There's also some keyboard work in here that reminds me of ELP, most precisely on the "Hell Suite". "Nothing" is a very-well crafted and multi-layered album that demands relisten and full attention, it's not easily accessible but it's experimental enough to be original and not mainstream. Some tracks ... read more
