Four is hard to dislike: it's cheery, uplifting, high spirited and good fun.
On Four the scales are tipped heavily in favor of the kind of songs they do best, with the majority of them sounding like good-time hits that will go a long way toward warming up a cold November night.
If 1D wanted to escape boy-band gravity and stay relevant, they’d need a damn good plan. Listening to Four, it appears that the group does indeed have one: They’re hiding in the 1980s.
Certainly by now the members of One Direction are aware that they can’t risk alienating this dedicated fan base; in fact, Four is preaching to the converted rather than attempting to win over new followers.
Four is solid enough to make you interested in the men they’ll become.
One Direction extend their winning streak, with echoes of the 1970s and 1980s.
It’s hardly groundbreaking pop, but Four is capably sung and beautifully produced.
With Four, they've all but gone the full New Joisey route, with several songs making brazen grabs for that rock heartland territory.
Unfortunately, the quest for maturity leads to a serious lull in the middle as the ballads pile up, but the chest-beating anthems ... are a blast.
Four is a positive step in that (one) direction, but for the sake of their longevity, they better figure it out before the charms of feigning bashfulness and biting their lower lip wear out.
I was practically biased all my life with One Direction, but when I decided to embark on their albums to have a reasoned opinion of them, I was actually surprised, while we still have some very weak projects like Up All Night, FOUR manages to stand out, even in their most pop cliche moments. Despite not being an incredible project it's a quite pleasant and decent one.

There are a lot of good songs, but the album isn't very cohesive. It is like shuffle mode. Love the 80s influences!
The pros outweights the cons here. It's a decent boy band record.
one of the albums i go for whenever I'm happy or want to be happy. it's just geniunely a pretty fun and joyful album. i love it. i wish this standard cover was available on streaming, it's kinda cute.
Beats: 70 - to be specific: i love the 80s influences, the use of instrumental parts (piano, electric guitars etc.) and melodies. but the production is very hit or miss for me.
Belts: 70 - i feel like there is a pretty good sense of which member would do which part of the song the best. they also sound nice singing together.
Bars: 50- very generic, nothing stood out for me, but not bad.
Binge: 50 - consistent sound, with good energy distribution throughout the album. there are no themes, ... read more
