The Observer

Overpowered's bubbling, sensual, and soulful glitterball gems effortlessly tap into the perennial glory of feeling lost and lonely at the disco at the end of the world.

AllMusic
Even if this album is a bid for the big time, it's done with such flair that it just underscores what a confident and unique artist Murphy really is.

The Line of Best Fit

Despite some dirty feathers in her tail (the plodding “Scarlet Ribbons”) this pop peacock is definitely on her own and loving it. This all means that I better start brushing up on my dance music.

80
Pitchfork

In a year of low-stakes disappointment for European pop, Overpowered is a triumph.

musicOMH
This is an album that exceeds expectations and is unlikely to disappoint those who do bother to listen to it.

The Guardian
Leaving behind the experimental, genre-flitting flourishes of her first solo record, Overpowered is an almost obscenely sharp package of electronic soul, stitching together crisp synthesised beats and the slicker tics of house with Murphy's blistering vocals.
80
Uncut
The result is a delight.
80
Mojo
The joyous next single, 'Let Me know,' along with dark gems such as 'Primitive' and 'Movie Star,' make this close to a modern synth-pop classic.
80
Gigwise
'Overpowered' owns a fair share of the hedonistic charge that is reflected in the spontaneous and energetic workings of its' conception and ultra-slick execution. 'Overpowered' forms no less than the sexiest dance release of '07, no challengers.

Q Magazine
Crucially, her songwriting has deepened and matured.

Coke Machine Glow

Overpowered is both impressive and incredibly fun, but fun in a way that Ruby Blue wasn't: you don't have to think here. Which, I mean, it's not that one is better than the other; they're just differently awesome.

Hot Press

Overpowered is a silvery mirrorball of a record that perfectly illuminates the neon heart of Saturday night.

60
Drowned in Sound

Not once does Overpowered really drag its feet, but it never truly impacts with the might one could possibly expect from an artist with such a fine pedigree.

60
NME
The result is a thoroughly modern pop album that will best appeal to ageing clubbers.

Holy shit i love this so much.

So I randomly discovered this artist yesterday through her new single "fader" and i quite enjoyed it, it was wierd and abstract, right up my alley. Then i was recommended to listen to this album by @SolaceOfOrder (cheers mate).

HOLY COW this album is awesome. The early 2000s electropop sound is so epic. i adore the instrumentation on this album, the disco/electropop fusion with elements of classical instruments like violins and brass which are pretty ... read more

Brief Review: A lot more interesting than the debut, even if it’s still got some guff here and there. But the highs are def higher and better, and I def enjoyed this more. Cool knowing this is the direction she went in from this point forward, it fits her a lot more.

This album is so interesting. It radiates this captivating, soothing, and energetic sound without being overly triumphant. I find that so fascinating as I get slowly pulled into the dance floor to just... dance without worry. No worry of being exhausted, no worry of being judged, I can just be myself. The first track encapsulates everything I have said. It has a beautiful atmosphere with catchy sounds. I also love the theme, it is ... read more

Absolutely incredible. Roisin Murphy is one of the most interesting faces of the 21st century, and this is her best record till date. Overpowered is such an intriguing and frenetic love rollercoaster that challenges the preconceptions of Pop, just like Ruby Blue did, but in a catchier and honestly even better way.
