In the case of The Information, the results are very agreeable indeed.
An absorbing journey through the still-buzzing mind of one of modern music’s greatest solo artists, The Information could well be regarded as one of its maker’s classics in a year or two; it certain warrants slipping onto a shelf beside the aforementioned hit-spawning ’96 long-player.
Fun, fresh and (mainly) utterly listenable, The Information is the most diverse and, at times, thrilling album you’ll hear all year, and although that word ‘genius’ is horrifically overused these days, it’s more than appropriate to be applied to Beck.
If you give it time, The Information eventually reveals itself as Beck's tightest, most purposeful album yet.
If Beck gets better as he gets madder, this is definitely his best since ‘Midnite Vultures’ – maybe even since ‘Odelay’.
Overall, this collision of dirty loops and polished pop is Information you need.
Beck’s twitchy pop-funk has rarely come across as this confident. Consider The Information his reanimation.
It always used to feel like Beck was years beyond us but, as The Information attests, the universal struggle is finally catching up with him. Took long enough.
The Information is a bracing reminder that Beck's musical imagination has survived his fall from fashion.
Without the bizarre lyrical invention and fuck-shit-up whimsy of his earlier work, Beck's attempts at party jams come off woefully overwrought and flat, making the darker bits interspersed throughout seem intriguing by default.
I’m convinced that Beck Hansen has a few more good albums in him. One thing’s for sure, though: The Information isn’t one of them.
The Beck album no one ever talks about
Since 2019 I've been listening and trying to get into Beck's discography. I know, it's been almost 3 years on this trip, and I honestly never would've thought that it'd take me so long, but, it's just because of how many different phases Beck's had on his career. I mean, everyone knows about how many different genres and sounds Beck has tried his hands on, and for me, well, it has been sorta hard to really get into all of this. Now, since last year his ... read more
Beck's first misstep since his first two records. The sci-fi aesthetic is enjoyable here fs but so little is done with it that captures my attention in a palpable way
Beck tried to do something similar to Odelay and Guero here, but mostly removed all the dirty guitars and added more acoustic indie and electronic music combinations. Good concept, and I like it. The main flaw of the album has to be the proportion of the really good songs and the casual ones. There's a bit too small amount of good stuff for a 15 song album. Beck usually handles any length albums well, this one is no exception, but a lot of songs kind of lacked something. I'll get to them ... read more
Beck mixes up his sound a bit here, trying out different ideas and directions. That said, I found it a bit boring at times. Not a bad album, just one that never fully clicks for me.
