the sidepeices - darklight
85

the sidepeices - darkskin niggas with lightskin problems
95

houston stays on toppppppp fuck yeah

nothing better released this decade! absolutely nothing! i could be annoying and pretentious about this but there's no point! fuckkkkk yes dude

Cavetown - Running With Scissors
40

he's in his pop punk indietronica era! please go back!

Yusef Lateef - Live at Pep's
65

pretty great and relaxing bop

A$AP Rocky - Don't Be Dumb
60

lowkey i like a lot of the experimentation. tommy wright iii samples are great. im not a fan and i didnt experience the 8 year wait so maybe that informs my subtle enjoyment.

Boris - Pink
90

yeah boris are the fucking goats and don't you ever forget it

Mitski - Where's My Phone?
60

run of the mill mitski circa 2014

The Velvet Underground - Live MCMXCIII
65

Its pretty fiiiine, but most experimental things turn into blues in a way thats just okay

Melody's Echo Chamber - Unclouded
55

passed so quick i didnt notice. kinda just a whatever album

Red House Painters - Red House Painters (Rollercoaster)
80

Probably the perfect January listen. Slowcore absolutely destroys me. I adore this album.

STOMACH BOOK - GOODNIGHT HYPNOPOMP
60

she’s got some incredible production skill. i’m more of a fan of the edge in the lyrics this time around, not sure why. #love trans women

40

not something I would revisit. quickly learning I'm not a goth rock fan

my bloody valentine - loveless
80

It seems that loveless is the closest album to achieving monolithic status in recorded popular music. It is an undeniably important album for the sonic vocabulary so many musicians draw from. It is no doubt one of the most influential albums to come out of the back half of the 20th century.

That being said, I think us music-thinkers tend to overrate loveless; drawn into a lull by its sheer density. There is plenty to criticize here.

"loomer" and "touched" are ... read more

The Replacements - Let It Be
70

i have not a single nuanced thing to say here. Its quite good

Mastodon - Crack the Skye
50

really did not stand out to me in any real way

Model/Actriz - Pirouette
75

Pirouette devolves from Dance-Punk into Industrial / Experimental Rock along its runtime in tandem with the speaker spiraling further and further into a hole of queer self-loathing. It's a gorgeous album that has a great deal to say about religion, sexuality, desire, and just how strange it can be to be loved.

Parts of Pirouette bounced off of me for various reasons (strange phrasing in lyrics, a messy production choice) but it is, all in all, an extremely rewarding listen for those who ... read more

loopcinema - My-Lovely-Yellow-Kombi
85

loopcinema gets so much better every release. My-Lovely-Yellow-Kombi is an hour-long EP that is so effortlessly vibrant; full of life and fuzzy gnostic psychedelia. so excited for this year in electronic music, because if THIS is a JANUARY release? hell yes.

Sweet Trip - Velocity : Design : Comfort.
75

Pretty good but not completely consistent

Black Country, New Road - Live at Bush Hall
60

These do feel like cutting room floor type tracks, but they are not bad by any means. just a little inconsistent and a little messy. Turbines/Pigs is really That Good though

Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
80

undeniably one of the best jazz records of all time, but cool modal jazz falls to the wayside to me in a lot of ways. It's an essential but not a favorite.

"@TopHatGoose I do quite like Forever Howlong but i think any copycats wouldn't be particularly enjoyable. The sound evolution was VERY appreciated to me. The combination of Baroque Pop and Chamber Rock is hard to fake: It's usually great, or it's quite bad. Forever Howlong proved to me that BC,NR are one of the more cohesive modern bands in the artistic sense, and I deeply respect them for their commitment to originality. They don't invent the conventions but they do innovate in important ways. If other people fail to make Baroque Pop next, fine! Most I can do is give my props and credit to the artists I like. Nice talking to you! AOTY usually isn't the place I go for actual music discussion, so this is quite welcome."

"@TopHatGoose Thanks for the explanation, I likely won't sit through more though, lol The constant windmill scene veneration is something that has annoyed me to no end! It essentially has two genres (crank wave and chamber-post-baroque-rock-pop / ants from up there-ish), and i'm sick of both. this year has seen so many derivative windmill type albums that the scene has near lost its charm. It's frankly ridiculous how boring it's all become (looking at Racing Mount Pleasant). I seriously hope its just a 2020s fad."

"@TopHatGoose Pain to Power was the first Maruja thing I ever heard, it's fascinating how they've been making the same okay crank wave for years It kind of pisses me off that I disliked this EP so much because now i feel like i was swindled. Takes a lot for a band to pull that off. Funny story, after hearing Pain to Power I was so enamored by it (as one is the first time hearing Proletariat-Crank-Wave) that I pre-ordered the vinyl. It never ended up coming after four months, I eventually had to call my bank to refund. I don't know if that's a normal occurrence, but I think it IS a sign."
