Faust - The Faust Tapes
72

An album with the concept being... that it doesn't really have a concept? I mean, I guess it has the concept of being just like a demo tape... but this is their official third studio album. It's so weird. Imagine making experimental opuses like their debut or Faust So Far and then releasing...what basically is just a demo tape. It is an enjoyable sound collage album, it's just a big mess, to be honest.

Flashback Caruso is the first track that you could actually call a complete song...and it's ... read more

Faust - So Far
90

I was so incredibly impressed by Faust's debut that I decided the check out their sophomore record, Faust So Far. And, as it turns out, Faust is not just a one trick pony of a band.

The album starts off with It's A Rainy Day Sunshine Girl, and it already feels like a completely different band than the one that made their last album, their experimental opus of an debut. It's also long-winded, but much more repetitive. Doesn't mean that it is bad though. It is much less exciting than anything ... read more

Faust - Faust
95

This was insane. This is the only Krautrock album I have heard so far that is on par with Can's Tago Mago. All three tracks on this thing are experimental opuses and absolute masterpieces.

Why Don't You Eat Carrots is a manic mixture of rock and circus music, making it both hilarious and horrifying at the same time. It's 9 and a half minutes filled with chaotic insanity that you can't get out of. Meadow Meal starts off in an extremely experimental way, but then goes into an amazing jam that ... read more

Can - Ege Bamyası
85

Can is the quintessential Krautrock band and I had to check out more of their stuff after I fell in love with their record Tago Mago.

Pinch is an absolute mess of a song, but in a good way. I really have no idea what type of sound to attach to that track in my head, it's just a bunch of drumming and a lot of noises with Damo just saying shit over it, but it somehow works...? As much as I have no clue what to even really think of this track or how they did it, you gotta respect making a song ... read more

Neu! - Neu! '75
86

Neu!'s self-titled '75 record seems to be an essential part of Krautrock history and I've recently gotten more and more interested in what might be the most exciting music scene to ever come out of Germany. I decided I'd rather listen to their '75 record than their debut simply because I listened to the opener (Hallogallo), which was okay, but just kinda boring, especially for its overly long runtime of 10 minutes. Then I skipped through the rest and it seemed to be mostly ambient stuff, and as ... read more

no kidding, this song legitimately made me more suicidal

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - F♯ A♯ ∞
88

Yeah, pretty great, but let's be honest, it's nowhere near to being as great as Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven. It's atmospheric and a bit more ambient than that record, and it has a much more consistent tone, but it didn't really impress me as much as their second album in terms of songwriting. It's gonna grow on me though.

Mitski - Laurel Hell
85

Lyrically, Mitski isn't necessarily treading new ground on this album, but she brings a somewhat darker twist to them. Sonically, there are many bleak and oftentimes empty-feeling moments too. All of these perfectly contrast each other on Laurel Hell though. I am very happy that Mitski is trying to write some longer songs and isn't just putting out barely-2-minute-songs again, however, Laurel Hell still suffers from some of the issues that even her best records have. It just has a few boring ... read more

Black Country, New Road - Ants From Up There
100

And I guess, in some way... Isaac had always been the guest.

I usually don't give recent records a 100 rating, but I know that I would rate it that eventually, so why not just do that now.
I mean, wow. Ants From Up There is a magnificent, emotional but also masterful record. From the sharp, tragic but also witty poetry of Isaac Wood (who sadly had to leave the band), to the incredible instrumentation on each song, the thematic, lyrical and instrumental callbacks, the cohesive structure of ... read more

Nine Inch Nails - Ghosts V: Together
82

I haven't heard the original Ghosts, but Ghosts V: Together is a pretty fantastic ambient album. Just like his film-score work, Trent creates some pretty amazing textures and piano compositions to make an amazing and cohesive piece of ambient music.

Shane Carruth - Upstream Color (Original Motion Picture Score)
NR

Shane Carruth is an amazing filmmaker and a surprisingly great composer as well. The score for Upstream Color is dreamy and confusing, just like the film, but it communicates the emotions of the film pretty well as a companion piece.

Vincent Gallo - Recordings of Music for Film
80

Think of Gallo what you want, I think Buffalo '66 is a masterpiece and The Brown Bunny is also great, and the music he does for them is pretty great. This compilation is not necessarily a very consistently great throughout, but there are some pretty great lo-fi ambient tracks on here which sound quite great.

Grouper - A I A : Alien Observer
90

Genuinely surprised by how great this is. It's very dreamy ambient music while still having a lot of interesting songwriting within. It's very soothing but also creates an interesting soundscape with great textures.

吉村弘 [Hiroshi Yoshimura] - Green
95

While one or two songs on this do not work and some of the tracks are a little too repetitive to be as long as they are, this album is really great. One of the most soothing and heartwarming Ambient albums I've ever heard. It not just sets a mood, but also communicates a lot of powerful emotions. Really great for reading.

The Velvet Underground - White Light/White Heat
88

[EDIT, 85--->88]:
Even after literal years, and having gained a newfound appreciation for the band since the beginning of 2024, I still haven't warmed up to this album. I originally thought that this might be a masterpiece that I don't get yet, but now, after properly relistening to it again and again, can pretty safely say that I think I have a good grasp of it now, and still don't love it entirely. I like it a bit more now, I definitely admire the thematic cohesion, energy and the boldness ... read more

Miles Davis - Bitches Brew
100

(A lot of people do perfect score purges, where they downrate albums they gave a 100/100 to, but what I'm doing right now is the reverse of that, imma be more charitable and give albums 100/100 that I originally didn't believe to be perfect.)

Miles is on another level with most of his albums, and yet somehow, this is even further ahead of the curve. Bitches Brew is an artistic achievement that's hard to put into words, it's probably not just his greatest project of all time but also in ... read more

Joanna Newsom - Ys
100

The first time I listened to Ys by Joanna Newsom, it was January 2021. So, it has basically been a year since I first heard it. Why am I logging it just now?

Well, it's because I couldn't really grasp what it was at that point in time. I listened to it, thought it was a nice and pretty album with some very cryptic but great lyrics but it never really got past that for me. I just felt like it wasn't really "my taste".

And it wasn't! I mean, I've never heard anything like it! The ... read more

Earl Sweatshirt - SICK!
93

Earl Sweatshirt is my favorite rapper. He might not be my favorite Hip Hop artist ever, but definitely my favorite in terms pure rapping and lyricism. In 2018, Earl/Thebe released "Some Rap Songs", which has become something that I consider my favorite Hip Hop album and one of my top 10 favorite albums ever.

So I was a little skeptic before going into this record. How was Earl gonna top his last album? I was actually one of the few people that also really liked his in-between EP ... read more

Burial - ANTIDAWN
83

Honestly, a little underrated. I've only ever listened to Burial's Untrue (which was really amazing) and his single from last year, Chemz, which was one of my favorite tracks of that year, and honestly, this album /EP isn't even that far away from that level of quality. Is it as exciting and complex as Untrue? Nah, but what I enjoyed most about that album was the inclusion of ambient within the production. So him going into full-on ambient mode doesn't really bother me. The sound design of this ... read more

Silk Sonic - An Evening With Silk Sonic
82

Is this just a tad bit overhyped? Maybe. But my god, it is good. I didn't expect to hear anything of this quality level from Bruno Mars nowadays. Heck, maybe even ever. They both have great chemistry and they do a really great job of mixing these R&B and Soul sounds with a bit of a pop aesthetic. I really like the songwriting on here and I can safely say that there isn't a single bad track on this album. I'm also happy that they went for a total length of only 31 minutes and 9 songs. It ... read more
