I haven't listened to it THAT many times, because it is a pretty long record, but damn. I now understand why Jimi is supposed to be the god of the guitar. He is. I literally bought the vinyl to this thing after 2 listens. What a phenomenal LP. Incredible from front to back. Yes, the long compositions are the greatest pieces on here, but even little funny things like Little Miss Strange are something I can appreciate. To be honest, if I maybe get into it a bit more after even more listens, it ... read more
My score might increase a lot later on, just like it did on LCD Soundsystem's This is Happening, but for now, I'll keep that rating. North American Scum, Someone Great, All My Friends, New York, I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down are all INCREDIBLE 9/10 or 10/10 tracks, genuinely fantastic, but the rest... hmmm.
I sure like the rest, but things like Get Innocuous! made me want to fall asleep rather than dance of feel any emotion while listening to it. It's not bad, it just seems so ... read more
I OBVIOUSLY know the Beatles, however, I never actually listened to an entire album of theirs since I was a kid or something. So, yeah, I wanted to try to rediscover them nowadays...and I think the result came out exactly as I expected.
Yes, considering the time it was released in, the Beatles were revolutionary and were always known for being the Pop Rock group that had some pretty interesting songwriting chops. However, I thought the Beatles would never be anything to me personally other ... read more
I really loved this collection of EPs and a few other songs, I think it consists out of their best EPs and it certainly is worthy to be called a My Bloody Valentine project. I wrote reviews for all 5 Parts of the collection, so yeah. I don't have much to say, I'll just copy all those reviews under this if you wanna read a more in-depth review of it all.
You Made Me Realise:
You Made Me Realise is a very great track, especially with the crazy instrumental break in the middle. Fantastic song. ... read more
Tremolo contains a song like To Here Knows When, already known from their masterpiece Loveless, and the song itself is a little masterpiece itself, and here on this EP, there is even a little new outro which is pretty cool. Can't even tell you if I like the EP or LP version of this song more. Next up was Swallow, a very, very pretty song, easily one of their best non-Loveless tracks. The lyrics are open for interpretation I guess lol. Honey Power has such a strong, piercing guitar riff, but ... read more
Glider has Soon as the opener for the EP, which is pretty interesting considering that the exact same song is the closer to their masterpiece, Loveless. And it just works as well here. Soon is such an amazing track, you can’t go wrong with that. And now gotta address the elephant in the room. Yes, Glider (the title track) is just a weirdass loop. Reminds me of Nothing Is off of their album m b v. Just one loop repeating. I actually do like this title track more than Nothing Is, because at ... read more
Feed Me With Your Kiss (the title track) is a song I already know from Isn’t Anything, and it wasn’t one of my favorites of the album, but also not one of my least favorites. In context of the EP it works a bit better in my opinion. Although, I still don’t like what they do with the vocals (except for maybe the chorus). The guitar is still really nice and heavy on that track. I Believe is a very weird and almost ominous track, but sadly, their vocal experimentation ... read more
You Made Me Realise is a very great track, especially with the crazy instrumental break in the middle. Fantastic song. Slow is a very nice song as well, with the nice distorted, almost droney guitar in the back, although the song isn't a standout in any way, since it is a pretty uneventful song. Thorn is such a great fusion of Noise and Pop, but not really Noise Pop...if you get what I'm saying. I love that track a lot. While Cigarette in Your Bed might be another somewhat uneventful song, the ... read more
I like that this is pretty soft, very dreamy and almost Jangle-Pop like! I am a bigger fan of MBV's softer side so this was a treat! I like every song on here, but my favorites are I Don't Need You, (You're) Safe in Your Sleep (From This Girl) and You've Got Nothing. My least favorite is probably Clair. The vibe of this thing reminds me of multiple things they would do in the future, but somehow still really stands on its own. Loved this quite a lot, actually. The first time where I actually ... read more
Strawberry Wine, the first track on here is just a little boring and a bit messy, but the feeling of the song is pretty similar to what they would do later on in the bands discography. I really like Never Say Goodbye, especially how Kevin Shields and Bilinda Butcher go back and forth in the verses, although I don't like when they sing together on the chorus. Can I Touch You is a pretty song with a nice atmosphere, even though there isn't anything to write home about, but its neat.
It's a good ... read more
Even though apparently they said that the songs have some darker meanings, the sound of this EP is easily some of MBV's most happy and sunny (as the title suggests) work they ever made. A indie fan's dream Summer record lol. It's not perfect and lacks a bit of more detail, but I actually like Conway's vocals on this EP, in their first 2, I kinda disliked him (especially on Geek!). Sylvie's Head is the only one that I didn't enjoy that much, other than that, this album is just pretty fun.
A cool Noise aesthetic and Conway isn't as Parody-like anymore and kind of finds a sound for himself, although it might not be the best vocal work you'll ever hear. Especially lyric-wise, you can finally hear a little bit of future MBV in here, as it is, in comparison to "Geek!", much more going into a direction of auditory romanticism, which they would later perfect on Loveless. It's a nice EP. Nothing groundbreaking, but a collection of 4 songs that I like. We're So Beautiful is the ... read more
Conway basically sounds like a Parody of Post-Punk and Goth-Rock vocalists lol.
Yeah, to be honest, this is kind of overhated. It has some good moments. No Place to Go and The Sandman Never Sleeps are actually pretty solid Post-Punk songs. Moonlight and Love Machine are kinda bad though. It's not horrible by any means though. It's just kind of mediocre Post-Punk. Has some interesting and unique moments that shine through sometimes.
Edit: I actually really, really like this now. It's still my least favorite LP of MBV but after subsequent listens, I understood more of what it was going for. I'm gonna leave my old review still here though:
This is the first MBV album that I actually don't love (at least partially) on first listen. First listen of Loveless: thought it was okay. After many listens its one of my favorite albums ever. First listen of m b v: Liked it even less than Loveless at first, after multiple listens I ... read more
To be honest, I did not expect this to be as good as it was.
I thought I'd like In Court of The Crimson King, and that would be all I listen to by King Crimson, but some of these songs here almost come close to ICOTCK.
I do actually think this works better as an album as well!
In Court of the Crimson King is much more experimental, much more grand and a lot more out there, but Red seems a lot more cohesive than their debut. Because yes, I do think almost all songs on In Court... could be ... read more
Okay, so here's a review of this album after one listen and another after multiple listens. Imma keep the one with one listen still up because I think its cool to see the difference between the two.
Review after first listen (original rating: 81):
I need to relisten. When I listened to Loveless I was already a bit confused as to why people love it so much, but after listening to it dozens of times, I literally think its one of the best albums of the 90s. This one is even more offputting and ... read more
The first Swans album that I actually LOVE. I liked To Be Kind and leaving meaning. a lot, but Filth is such a fantastic expression of true filthy aggression. It is a lot less grand and epic but therefore a lot more based on emotion and I think that I love that more. I don't know. It just connects to me more.
need to relisten. Interesting and very intriguing both lyrically and sonically but definitely confusing and offputting on first listen; but amazing nonetheless.
forgot to log it;
Slint created a creepy and dark album, which for me is perfectly described by a random youtube comment I found recently:
"Spiderland sounds like an Edgar Allen Poe poem in musical form".
Incredibly influential but never replicated!
It's German, and I hate German music (I am from Germany), but parts of this gave me hope for some better future for German Indie Music. The harder, almost noisy parts of this were the most enjoyable, as well as the vocalists screaming that occasionally appears. The Jangle-Pop or Ballad type of tracks were just really fucking boring but I'd say that it's still overall a good album with some nice lyrics.
