Sabrina Carpenter - Singular Act I
76

Sabrina Carpenter further improves on this release... It still lacks the extra special something but it's headed in the right direction with some pretty great songs. I think the best aspect is that Sabrina's personality is coming across a lot more than her first two albums. Production is good, not too overbearing and the songs are overall a lot stronger.

Highlights for me are Paris, Sue Me and Diamonds are Forever

Aerosmith - Rocks
88

Much like Steven Tyler wails on Back in the Saddle, I'M BAAAAAAAAAAACK... after the Olympics took over my life for two weeks.

Anyway, this is great! It's more of the same but is probably Aerosmith's most consistent album, there's nothing as great as Sweet Emotion but it's 35 minutes of great catchy rock.

Highlights for me are Back in the Saddle, Last Child, Rats in the Cellar and Nobody's Fault.

Green Day - ¡Tré!
63

Not as good as ¡Uno!, not as bad as ¡Dos! That's all there's is to say really, it's the same as the rest of the trilogy, pretty average overall. There are some good moments here, and I think Brutal Love is probably the best song from the 3 albums... I'm happy the trilogy is over now though.

Highlights for me are Brutal Love and Dirty Rotten Bastards

The White Stripes - The White Stripes
78

πŸŽ‰ 200 followers, thank you! πŸŽ‰

Over the weekend I broke into 200 followers, so it's time for me to start a new long discography dive... Enter Jack White!

Really solid debut from The White Stripes, it doesn't hit the highs of later albums, it's straightforward garage rock but White's talent manages to come through. I think it struggles during the middle with some weaker cuts but it's still a real good listen!

Highlights for me are Jimmy the Exploder, Stop ... read more

Lady Gaga - Joanne
78

I quite like that Gaga changed a bit for this one, less in your face (although I don't think Gaga will ever be subtle), and more laid-back. It starts really strong, but I think it loses steam in the second half. Probably too heavy on the ballad side, mainly because the ballads seem to be a bit weaker here for me. Still, an enjoyable album!

Highlights for me are A-YO, John Wayne and Perfect Illusion

Prince and The Revolution - Parade (Music From the Motion Picture Under the Cherry Moon)
80

This is a bit of an odd one, another soundtrack but unlike Purple Rain I don't think it flows very well. That's not to say it's bad, far from it it just doesn't hit quite the same as the other albums from The Revolution. The first half is a bit hit and miss for me but the second half really gets good, those last 3 songs are just absolutely stellar!

Highlights for me are Kiss, Anotherloverholenyohead and Sometimes it Snows in April

61

A new Sabbath album, a new singer! Obviously trying to recreate the Dio era albums, but it's actually not that bad! It's a bit cheesy in places and the production is VERY 80's but I wouldn't say there's any bad songs, most of it is mid but there are some really good moments and Tony Martin gives everything a bit of energy, surprisingly enjoyable!

Highlights for me are The Shining and Eternal Idol

Green Day - ¡Dos!
53

Yeesh! There's some terrible stuff here, I think Nightlife has become my lowest rated song... Just why?!?! 😬 We all know Nightlife, Fuck Time and Lady Cobra are terrible songs so I'll pass by those... The rest of the album thankfully isn't as bad as them, it's not great either but there are some good moments that save this from being a complete disaster! I quite like Wild One and Amy, Lazy Bones is the best here for me... The rest is varying levels of average to slightly ... read more

Mariah Carey - Charmbracelet
63

This album definitely has issues. Mariah sounds detached for most of it and the songs are just really uninspired. It's also too long and the production sounds off. Having said that, I wouldn't say there was anything bad, and there is some good stuff, just nothing outstanding... Even the big ballad single Through the Rain is a bit ballad by numbers. Bringin' on the Heartbreak is a good song as well, but it just feels like it's missing something.

Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga - Cheek to Cheek

I wasn't sure whether or not to rate and review this one because big band, swing music isn't really my bag and I didn't want to skew the ratings based on personal preference... However, I enjoyed it more than I thought I would! They both sound like they're really enjoying themselves, and the band sounds really good too. There's nothing extraordinary, they do nothing with the songs, as far as I can tell, but it's a fairly enjoyable listen.

The Boys Next Door - Door, Door
72

The album that started the excellent career of Nick Cave... and where I start my listen of his discog. It's a bit of a mixed bag, but overall good! Post punk, new wave it actually reminds me a bit of Japan. There's a definite sense of them trying to find a sound to stick with, some songs fast and furious whilst others take a bit more time and build (those are better in my opinion)... Shivers is really fucking good.

Highlights for me are Friends of my World, After a Fashion and Shivers

Sabrina Carpenter - EVOLution
69

This a pretty big step up from her debut, there's a lot more personality here! Having said that, it wouldn't be hard to have more personality than her debut, so it's still lacking somewhat. It's a much more enjoyable listen though, it's more firmly in the dance pop category which suits Carpenter well and the songwriting is overall stronger. Step in the right direction for sure!

Highlights for me are On Purpose and Space

David Bowie - β˜… [Blackstar]
100

πŸŽ‰ My 300th Review! πŸŽ‰

What a way to end a career and say goodbye to the world. It's heartbreaking, but also uplifting and hopeful. Experimental, but instantly recognisable. The perfect last album which deals with death, life and legacy. The album sounds free whilst also following a singular vision, probably because it was recorded with a jazz band. Lazarus has to be one of Bowie's greatest songs, on one of his greatest albums. The world hasn't been the same since he left. ... read more

David Bowie - The Next Day
88

What an excellent album this is! That Bowie came back after so long and released something that was so good and, like all his best work, sounded so fresh, with one foot in the past and one very much in the present. It not only has flashes of all his previous work it also sounds very much of it's time. It slightly dips in quality from track 7-12, but these are not bad songs, it's just everything else is so bloody good!

Highlights for me are The Stars (Are Out Tonight), Love is Lost, ... read more

Nektar - Remember the Future

πŸ“ Recommended by frogofprog & Blibloblublub πŸ“

I've never heard of Nektar before so came into this completely blind and it was a really nice surprise! It covers a lot of ground in just 35 minutes. It starts funky, throws in a bit of pop, all whilst being prog rock through and through. Great harmonies and some awesome solos. I really like how the songs build, some of the sections aren't as good as others and some of the transitions come out of nowhere, but otherwise this is ... read more

David Bowie - Reality
76

Not quite as strong as Heathen, but honestly I don't think there's much in it. Heathen was a slower burn, but this has a bit more energy to it. It struggles in the middle somewhat, but the first few songs and the last few are really strong. I think this one is unfairly overlooked.

Highlights for me are New Killer Star, Pablo Picasso, Reality and Being Me the Disco King

Black Sabbath - Seventh Star
54

This was originally conceived as an Iommi solo album, which probably explains why it sounds NOTHING like Sabbath. I don't hate it, I prefer it over Born Again, it's just generic 80's rock really... There's nothing that makes it sounds like anything special, but there's also nothing that I hate about it... It's firmly out of the danger zone and into the middle of the road. The title track was the best here for me.

No highlights for me really.

Green Day - ¡Uno!
69

Wow, people really don't like this album! I dunno, I think it's fine. It's nice they've tried to go back to basics, but there is definitely something missing. It all sounds a bit pedestrian. That's not to say I didn't enjoy it, I don't think there's anything bad here, there's just nothing that stands out too much either.

Highlights for me are Stay the Night, Rusty James and Oh Love

P!nk - Try This
75

P!nk continued to try and assert herself with this album, unfortunately it's a pretty mixed bag. I quite enjoy listening to it, but a lot of the album doesn't leave much of a lasting impression. She was definitely trying to embrace the edgy rock persona, but it comes across a bit forced on some tracks.

Highlights for me are Trouble, God is a DJ, Waiting for Love and Feel Good Time

Green Day - 21st Century Breakdown
82

This album seems to have a bad rep and I'm not 100% sure why? Yeah, it's obvious they're just trying to make American Idiot 2, but I think every song here is at least good... It's definitely not as consistent and it's their weakest album since Kerplunk but I dunno, I dig it. It's a bit long, and if they cut the whole concept album thing and cut a few songs out there's a really great album here.

Highlights for me are East Jesus Nowhere, ¿Viva la ... read more
