And thus concludes my Drake discography listen… and I’m kinda disappointed lowkey. I heard a lot of great things about this album, so going in I was very excited, and it really wasn’t it. 21 Savage had very little presence and Drake was pretty much just business as usual, which is cool sure, but hardly innovative. This had the potential to be an instant classic honestly, it just wasn’t it.

I never understood the hate for this album… even when I first heard it; I was kind of underwhelmed but generally was indifferent. Well, on a relisten… I actually like it a lot? This isn’t some smart house music obviously, but neither does it treat itself that way. It’s just good dumb fun, something Drake excels at, and thus, it becomes one of not only his best modern projects but one of his better projects.

I get the hate for this album. While I think it’s a bit much, I fully understand it, and even agree in part. But, I can’t bring myself to truly hate this. It is undoubtedly a bad album, but it’s such a catastrophic mess it’s very entertaining. Still… should NOT be that long.
Gone are the youthful and quirky Songs For Young Lovers; Sinatra settles for a much more seldom and centralized sound/theme In the Wee Small Hours. The album is noticeably more mature and holds overall better songs, but I do prefer the more brief Songs For Young Lovers, which also has a more three dimensioned message outside of just constant heartbreak.
I tried listening to this album a bit earlier because I really fw the album cover but I was greeted with really bad singing (the nasally kind too, which is good when it lands but alas), generic production, and some weirdly stiff lyricism which wants to be different but finds itself nestled in such safe conventions. I don’t doubt Cavetown can improve, they seem talented enough, but I realllly hope they do.
I’m gonna prob piss off everyone because I hate the one song everyone likes (Glimpse of Us) and I much prefer the second disk.
As for the first point, Glimpse of Us had always been my least favorite song Joji released since its release as a single. It’s boring, the chorus is overhyped and has no emotional punch to me, and his overall voice, while very good and unique, does not fit in in that setting. Overall, the first disk is pretty mediocre in quality, I was not impressed. The ... read more
No review, have not listened, I just want to once again state it’s so tragic how he died. 34 is so young. I wish he found the support he needed. He was a public laughing stock and it never felt right with me, words cannot really express my grief. Hope his brother Nick and the rest of the family are doing well.

Yeah, this is more or less what I want. I feel like I’m gonna piss everyone off with this take so apologies but my favorite two songs on Dark Lane Demo Tapes (awesome name btw) are “Toosie Slide” and “Pain 1993”. The former is super cheesy but I did not have tiktok by the time that sound basically invaded the app; I downloaded the app like two years back only. Meanwhile, in “Pain 1993”, I can understand not being into Carti’s baby ... read more

Old Drake + new problems
I like the sound of this album, 40 was in more control of production so the downtempo stuff is more clear. Those were always my favorite songs anyways, so I should’ve loved this compilation. I didn’t. At this point, I am soooo tired of this man dragging out his albums to like an hour and a half. Chill. Please. Have some reservation π. I still have like 4 projects to go and I’m already really tired of this formula. Half of these songs ... read more
It’s a really good song if u skip after the first two minutes, which is what I always did so it wasn’t an issue. First half was a meme yes but I always liked it, even beforehand. The second half is pretty derivative and bland although it’s not bad per say.
The intro to Cherokee deadass had me levitating it was so majestical. Why did Clifford Brown have to die so young he was so talented :(. Didn’t even see 27.

Holy shit it’s SOOOOOO BORING. Wow. This is so boring. Survival is a goated intro track… it goes pretty crazy, but the rest of the album is actual ass. The fall off from Survival into the cheap ass Nonstop is very entertaining though lol. This was kinda sad though. Drake’s prior long albums (View and More Life) weren’t amazing but they had their bangers, this was just sad.
Drake 8/?
The highs are incredibly high and the lows are mid. It’s pretty like a more up tempo Views… and its run time feels less like a drag. I still think there’s too much skips to justify that great a score, but it’s a good album, and unfortunately, from this point out the compliments might stop with Scorpion next.
Drake 7/?
Yeah, no, I definitely see why people don’t like this one. The obvious flaw and my biggest one… it’s… so long. At almost an hour and a half, the songs just kinda mesh into one weird R&B pop mess… and while I think Drake can pull off that sound well in the first half, it gets boring. I have to give it a lot of points for how forward thinking it was; more than 6 years later and it still sounds relevant and the production is quite good. However, how ... read more
Drake 6/? and Future TBD
Well, that was… really good. Some great beats all around, and Drake and Future had a great chemistry throughout. Some songs like Jumpman are very overplayed but even that song is pretty good for what it is. This tape isn’t really trying to make a grand point or statement, it’s just 40 minutes of lavishness and fun and u gotta love it.
I agree with those describing this as an extremely angry calm album, because his lyricism is so bleak and bitter yet the jazzy lo fi beats are so calming. While I love this direction, and he has a great voice and fairly good flows, the beats can get kinda repetitive and I maybe wished he used some more live jazz instrumentals. It’s still pretty good though, it never overstays or understays its welcome.
This is a fantastic example of an otherwise good song being ruined by bad production. This sounds absolutely awful.
