A solid debut by a promising band. As you know, I'm a sucker for psychedelic rock. The genre had a revival during the 10s and it all began here and with Tame Impala. Yes, UMO is similar to Tame Impala but more lo-fi and less on the "trippy-ness". This album is short, catchy and has really good songwriting from Ruban Nielson. The album feels like a pleasant daydream. Just Ruban, his guitar and some rough jam sessions. It works! May not be that different from other psych acts, but ... read more
HAHAHAHA FUCK. Man I used to love this so much back in high school. It's not bad at all. But holy shit is it edgy. Tyler came to fame with Goblin, making waves with his not-so-PC approach. He showed potential on his debut mixtape, Bastard. His follow-up Goblin turned the edge and angst up to 11. He was coming for anyone and everyone here. No filters. Tyler is a good lyrcist and knows how to write songs. But unfortunately most of the instrumentals (and lyrics) suffer from being really... ... read more
Solid debut mixtape. A$AP Rocky, along with A$AP Mob, were the East Coast answer to Odd Future. It was a battle of the styles; swagger rap vs. alternative rap. A coulpe years later, we can see both Rocky and Tyler collab and become best of friends. Anyway, Rocky was gonna take hip-hop into a new direction with this tape. Sure, trap wasn't anything new to the South. But this "cloud rap" that shit was fresh. This is what inspired rappers like Yung Lean and Travis Scott. Trippy ... read more
One of the forerunners and princes of hypnagogic pop. This album is perfect from beginning to end. Is minimal synthpop a thing? Because that's how I can describe this beautiful piece of art. John Maus has a distinct baritone voice that mixes perfectly with the minimal yet moody instrumentals. Incredible basslines, amazing synth keys that take me back to some weird 80s horror film. The lyrics are so cryptic yet sound really straightfoward or nonsensical. That's what makes this album so ... read more
Not a bad companion EP to Passed Me By. Andy definitely has his own style and approach. Here we get more rhythmic sections and progressions. Still dark. Still moody. Incorporating more vocal samples. Lo-fi production, almost like that of outsider house. Ambient-esque drones and atmosphere. Worth checking out if you're into dub, techno or want to get into modern minimal techno.
Highlights: Posers, Bad Wires, Cracked
