Lil Ugly Mane - UNEVEN COMPROMISE

The Bohemian Rhapsody of Hip-Hop.

Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble - Texas Flood

Has it's moments, there is no doubt that SVR was a master of the guitar. However I find a lot of the songs to be quite forgettable. The highlights were Texas Flood, Rude Mood and Lenny. Overall the album just feels a little monotone.

Sonic Youth - Master-Dik

Sonic Youth having fun and experimenting, you have to take it for what it is. I find that Ticket To Ride cover fucking hilarious. This alternative version of Master-Dik is really cool too.

Favourite Tracks: Master-Dik, Beat On The Brat, Ticket to Ride / Master-Dik (Version) / Introducing the Stars

Least Favourite Tracks: Under the Influence of the Jesus and Mary Chain

Queens of the Stone Age - ...Like Clockwork

Beautiful, unsettling and funky. Homme and Co. really show off their versatility in a mind blowing 10 track masterpiece. An album everyone must hear at least once.

Favourite Tracks: Keep Your Eyes Peeled, I Sat By The Ocean, The Vampyre Of Time And Memory, Kalopsia, Fairweather Friends, I Appear Missing

Kleenex - Kleenex

An energetic, proto-riot grrrl EP. I love the Swiss-tinged vocals.

Favourite Tracks: Beri Beri, Nice

Wipers - Better Off Dead

An explosive debut EP, short, aggressive and very much to-the-point. Well worth the 5 minutes. Classic.

Sonic Youth - Walls Have Ears

My first attempt at writing a proper review, kind of.

This album captures Sonic Youth on their 1985 UK tour at their noisy prime. The recordings make you feel like you're really there, with interlude songs and chat between tracks. Green Love doesnt have much to say, a lackluster start to the album. The second track, Brother James, comes in with a ferocious Kim Gordon screeching the lyrics over Thurston and Lee's dissonant guitars, this is what I'm here for: raw energy. Kill Yr ... read more

Various Artists - No New York

A time capsule, capturing a section of the New York no-wave movement. I'm grateful to Brian Eno for putting this together. DNA, Teenage Jesus And The Jerks, The Contortions and Mars all play their abrasive, unique and utterly creative music in surprisingly high fidelity. Mars really let the album down, maybe the wrong songs were chosen, maybe I just don't like them that much. I'm unsure. The other three bands are amazing though.

I remember when the Sunglasses single came out, I didn't know what to think. It slowly grew on me to the point I couldn't wait for this album to come out... but they changed the singles? Why? Now I see it as an improvement.

Isaac's tenure in the band was tragically short. They aren't the same without him.

This song is masterpiece after masterpiece, all made by a bunch of London art kids. Insanely impressive, almost perfect.

Joni Mitchell - Court and Spark
95

Poetic, sonically varied and dynamic. This is the Joni Mitchell I love to hear, unlike Blue the piano ballads (like Down To You) really do something for me. I think Raised On Robbing might be my favourite songs by Joni currently. I love the jazzy ending of Twisted. Wonderful album start to finish.

Favourite Tracks: Court And Spark, Help Me, Free Man In Paris, Car On A Hill, Raised On Robbery, Twisted

Least Favourite Tracks: People's Parties

Neu! - Neu! '75

Synthy, ambient punk. Awesome album with a huge variety in sound. The only part I don't really like that much is Leb Wohl, I find it a bit tedious. Every other track is a banger though.

Favourite Tracks: Isi, Seeland, Hero

Least Favourite Tracks: Leb Wohl

The Evpatoria Report - Maar
95

A great modern post-rock album with touches of jazz. The dynamic range makes it a great headphones-in-bed listen. Songs can go from quiet and optimistic to explosive, huge and haunting. The GYBE influence is quite clear, not that that's a bad thing. Maar don't do much to make themselves stand out massively in the post-rock scene but they still make some pretty flawless music. The drumming is incredible through the album, despite not being a drummer I do spend a lot of time feeling the ... read more

Frank Zappa - Apostrophe (')

The Yellow Snow Suite was so amazingly conceived. Zappa was a once in a lifetime genius of a composer. The rest of the tracks are great, still funny and incredibly entertaining.

Joni Mitchell - Blue
72

I can see why this album is held in such high regard. Joni's voice is really beautiful, soaring over straightforward yet effective instrumentals. The songs that resonated the least with me were mainly the piano-led ballads. This is probably going to be seen as a hot take but i just found them too uninteresting. The songs that I loved I really did love though.

Favourite Tracks: All I Want, Little Green, Carey, California, This Flight Tonight

Least Favourite Tracks: My Old Man, Blue

This is where Sonic Youth really started to come into their own. Grinding guitars and dissonance blended with rolling rhythms and semi-jaded vocals. The atmosphere of this album is brilliant, it's a must listen for noise rock fans. The final track, Master-Dik perfectly encapsulates their sound; screeching guitar, aggressive vocal delivery, noise and that church bell fade out. Masterful.

Sonic Youth - Hold That Tiger

Sonic Youth ripping it up live. Fucking fantastic start to finish, a great selections of songs (mostly from Sister) and the mix really captures and preservew the noise and energy. Finishing off with 4 Ramones covers is the cherry on top.

Favourite Tracks: Schizophrenia, Brother Tom, White Cross, Cotton Crown, Pipeline/Kill Time, Catholic Brick, Expressway To Yr. Skull, Pacific Coast Highway

Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation

Do yourself a favour and listen. I'm feeling lazy and the music speaks for itself. Sonic Youth hit the perfect blend of noisy punk-inspired (whatever label) and pop sensibilities here. One of my all time favourite albums.

'68 - Two Parts Viper

This album fucking rips, like a hard-blues-rock mix of QOTSA and The White Stripes ‘68 make such a huge sound with just 2 members at the wheel. I first caught them at a festival by chance and they blew me away. This album is incredible, one I will probably listen to for the rest of my life.

A nice little pop-punk EP, nothing mould breaking but really solid.

Favourite Tracks: Mildlyinteresting, Gary’s Outcome, Doghouse

Coheed and Cambria - Vaxis III: The Father of Make Believe

A lot of songs I liked, quite a few I didn’t. I’m glad coheed can still sound like coheed. The last 4 The Continuum tracks were the highlight for me, classic coheed prog. I’m not invested in the Armory Wars storyline, I’m just here for the music.

Favourite Tracks: Goodbye Sunshine, Father Of Make Believe, Blind Side Sonny, Play The Poet, One Last Miracle, The Continuum I-IV

Least Favourite: Yesterday’s Lost, Meri Of Mercy
