Sounds like exactly what it is: a thrown together album to fulfill the label requirement, but it’s still incredibly vulnerable, confessional, and honest and I really like it.
Hyped for the album tonight.
While “Stranger In The Alps” is not as consistently great as Punisher, Phoebe Bridger’s debut still is fantastic and features some of her best written songs, such as “Funeral” and “Motion Sickness”.
On “King’s Disease III”, Nas comes through with the best album yet of the Nas/Hit-Boy collab projects.
This album is great, and it’s just so impressive considering how long into his career Nas is. Nas’s writing and performances are outstanding, the production is pretty great throughout, and there are so many fantastic highlights. It’s a little too long and the first half is generally stronger than the second half, but Nas’s rapping is just on another ... read more
“I Didn’t Mean To Haunt You” is an insanely impressive display of artistry from Quadeca, and it becomes even more impressive when you consider how much he has improved in such a short amount of time. This album sees Quadeca fully leaning into this experimental genre-bending lane, and the result is way beyond what I ever imagined Quadeca’s music could be when I first heard his music with “Voice Memos” in 2019. This album feels like Quadeca fully solidifying ... read more
Dev Lemons and Nick Is Not Green’s collab album is a nonsensical and incoherent ironic mess of an album, and that’s what makes it work and why it’s so interesting.
This project is my humor. It’s a combination of absurd and ironic and purposeful cringe that completely works for me. Add in the fact that it’s actually really well produced instrumentally and it’s just ridiculously enjoyable for me despite its glaringly obvious flaws. The transition between the ... read more
While I do think this is Joji’s best project and I do like it quite a bit, I still don’t think Joji has fully capitalized on his potential in full project form yet.
I have not been the biggest fan of Joji’s music in the past, but I have really loved some of his singles. I think “Run”, “Gimme Love” and “Glimpse of Us” are great tracks that fully capitalize on Joji’s potential. However, outside of these tracks I’ve found his music ... read more
“Bin Reaper 3: Old Testament” is one of the most fun albums I’ve heard in a while and knows exactly what it is and plays into that. It’s not a masterpiece or anything, but it’s not trying to be and thrives because of it. Because between his funny personality and charisma, the hilarious bars and one-liners, the vast amount of NBA references that make me laugh every time, and the incredible samples that he DEFINITELY didn’t clear, Babytron just makes such a fun ... read more
“Working On My Karma” is fine while it’s on and a pretty decent record, but it’s just a noticeable downgrade from their best material, especially due to how generic and kinda uninteresting it is as a whole.
I love dvsn’s first two albums, but their music has always been carried by the production and the vocal performances for me, as the songwriting and lyrics were always lacking a little. But on this album, the songwriting is noticeably even worse and the vocal ... read more
“10” might not be amazing and is kinda one-note overall, but it’s still a pretty well executed project from Westside Gunn with some excellent production and great guest features.
I have never been the biggest fan of Westside Gunn’s music. I really like his voice, his whole rapping style and aesthetic, and his production choices, but outside of “Pray for Paris” the other projects I’ve heard from him didn’t really do it for me. I find that he ... read more
While Yung Gravy doesn’t really build on his previous releases or prove he’s more than a one trick pony, this album is still a pretty enjoyable listen, even if he does kinda box himself in even further and show his limitations as an artist.
I really enjoyed his last album “Gasanova”, and the single “oops!” with Lil Wayne was one of my favorite singles of that year. While his music wasn’t amazing, going forward I saw a lot of potential for Yung Gravy. I ... read more
While I may not love this and have issues with it as a whole, I do like a lot of aspects of it and appreciate what it’s going for. For example, in theory I really like the whole laid back vibe and aesthetic that Smino is going for with this project, and I really like the sound of the production, but the execution doesn’t fully work for me. I wouldn’t be surprised if this does grow on me a little with more listens though.
Edit: it did grow on me a little, 65 to a 70
“The Loneliest Time” isn’t perfect and certainly isn’t reinventing the genre or anything, but it’s such a fun and well-executed pop album that it ends up being pretty great as a result.
This has been an album I’ve been very excited for. I’ve heard both Dedicated and Dedicated Side B in full, and I’ve heard many songs from Emotion and love the ones I’ve heard, but I’ve never heard the full album. I also obviously know “Call Me ... read more
I need more time with this, but this unfortunately feels like a regression and a step backwards for her artistically. It still is pretty enjoyable as far as pop albums go, but I’m left disappointed, especially considering how much I loved her last two albums and the artistic progression shown on them.
Edit: Okay, so I have listened to this a ridiculous amount of times and while it has grown on me a little more, I am still overall underwhelmed and have many issues with it, such as the ... read more
TAYLOR SWIFT DISCOGRAPHY DIVE #5
On “Lover”, Taylor moves from the darkness of her last album to a very bright and light album. And while I do really like it, it’s a little inconsistent and is too long. There are some really good songs and some great songwriting, but also some head-scratching moments (parts of “ME!”). Also, there aren’t necessarily any smash hits or any amazingly written songs that I would consider among Taylor’s best, which probably ... read more
TAYLOR SWIFT DISCOGRAPHY DIVE #4
I haven’t heard this album since it initially came out. And when this album first came out, I did not like it all that much. Many of the songs here felt awkward and cringey and it felt desperate to me. And while that all still may be true to an extent, I definitely have more of an appreciation for it. It’s definitely a huge shift, both sonically and attitude wise, and while I can totally acknowledge that it’s kinda cringey and awkward I still ... read more
TAYLOR SWIFT DISCOGRAPHY DIVE #3
“1989” is Taylor fully going in a Max Martin pop direction, and it’s great. It’s nothing all that special, and it definitely has some occasionally generic writing and instrumentals, but it’s just perfectly executed radio pop and my nostalgia for this album mostly makes up for the shortcomings. The highlights here are some of the best pop songs of the 2010s, and this whole album era is very iconic and nostalgic for me. Not every ... read more
TAYLOR SWIFT DISCOGRAPHY DIVE #2
I had heard the notable hits from this album, but I had never heard the full thing. So since I had never heard it, I made Taylor’s Version my first listen to it. Therefore, my rating is for the new versions of the 16 original songs only.
“Red” expands upon the country pop sound she had established with more rock and pop sounds in the mix. The pop songs are the ones I had known prior, and I’m very nostalgic for them. However, for these ... read more
