Chris Webby - Wednesday After Next
65

This album has a lot of good things going for it, but is not without its faults. I haven't listened to the rapper much since "Jamo Neat", but it appears that Chris Webby has really grown as an artist over the past 5 years. "Wednesday After Next" shows Webby is able to experiment with different sounds, paying some homage to other artists such as Eminem, Kendrick, Gorillaz, and Lil Dicky. In particular Webby seems to want to build his sound partly off Eminem's most recent ... read more

Hot Sugar - Life Support
78

This EP showcases a new side of Hot Sugar. I was shocked on first listen to discover that compared to the rest of Hot Sugar's discography this was an abnormal album stylistically. Being his first ambient album, Hot Sugar has done an excellent job. He has slowed down and smoothed out his sound. Adding in low hums of his synthesizer and natural sounds, to his already well thought out piano melodies. While many of his fans might react negatively to the mellow pace of this EP, I certainly did not. ... read more

Perry Blake - Songs of Praise
60

Songs of Paradise has some interesting and well constructed songs, but ultimately wasn't extremely enjoyable. I'm not particularly found of Perry Blake's voice, and I think that really dampened my overall interest. With that said, the darker songs on the album seem to fit his vocal style much more. Songs like " WROTE YOU A LETTER" are good examples of this.

FKA twigs - MAGDALENE
83

I went into this album with the suspicion that it was another overrated pop album. I was definetly wrong.

"MAGDALENE" is raw emotion throughout. Crisp piano melodies, chaotic ambience, glitchy beats, impactful lyrics, with FKA Twigs displaying her vocal range with grace. This album has pain showcased in all the right ways. The ambient electronic that plays in the background of many songs such as "Sad Days" really meshed well with the upbeat drumming and beautiful vocal. ... read more

Tycho - Weather
70

Tycho has once again delivers a good chill triphop album. I'm glad he's experimenting with some electronic pop styled lyrics with the inclusion of Saint Sinner, it's a nice change of pace for the artist's sound. In fact the vibe of the album was quite unique compared to the rest of Tycho's discography, which is refreshing. I've really enjoyed most of what Tycho has put out, but with that said Scott Hansen has a tendency to sound somewhat repetitive from track to track. This is less the case ... read more

O'Flynn - Aletheia
80

The first time I listened to this I was cooking up dinner and found myself in some sort of dancing chef mode for the first few tracks. Twirling around the kitchen and bobbing my head. Don't get me wrong though, this album isn't one giant party in the slightest, in fact many of the songs take a downtempo chill groove that is in sharp contrast to the more upbeat afrojam influenced house songs. What really makes this album worthwhile is O'Flynn's ability to create a good flow from song to song. ... read more

Caterina Barbieri - Ecstatic Computation
80

Reminded me a lot of late 70s/ early 80s German ambient electronica. I was shocked and pleased when I saw this album has been gaining attention. At times "Ecstatic Computation" has many of the same vibes I get from listening to Edgar Froese or Peter Baumann. However it has many dark twists and turns that bring me into a totally different space. The harsh sampling, punchy piano, and ambient vocals mixed with the often noisy background is not for the faint of heart, but for those ... read more

Grimes - Art Angels
65

Grimes plays with her synth in new ways, meshing her electronic pop sound with country and kpop alike. When Grimes takes risks they pay off for her. The best songs on this album are also the weirdest.

Her last album "Visions" was a little closer to my taste than "Art Angels" though. Some of the tracks felt a little closer to mainstream pop than I would have liked. The second half of the album in general feels kind of washed out. Tracks like "SCREAM" had me saying ... read more

Floating Points - Crush
85

This album was my introduction into Floating Points. I listened to basically his entire discography a few times over before coming back to this album to write a review. "Crush" by Floating Points aka Sam Shepherd has some amazingly well done experimental mashups between IDM, Jazz, ambient electronic, and splash of House. Tracks like "Les Aphex" and "Bias" might just be my two favorite electronic songs released in 2019. The drop in "Lex Aphex" is something ... read more

Tyler, The Creator - IGOR
80

This album got a lot of attention this year and I can see why. It has some excellent tracks. Tyler's sound is one I wish more artists in the world of rap would attempt. In fact I would hardly call Tyler a rap artist anymore, and that's probably for the better. He threw in some great riffs, excellent beats, electronic melodies, and quality lyrics.

After Tyler's "Flower Boy" I didn't really now what to anticipate. While Tyler had me hooked on Flowerboy, this album doesn't seem to grab ... read more

Floating Points - Elaenia

An amazing blend of genres. This album takes you on a journey through steady jazz instrumentals, IDM melodies, and ambient soundscapes. Sam Shepherd proved he knew how to not only create excellent songs but string them together in a cohesive and satisfying manner. A masterclass album without a doubt in my mind. It's subtleties, and at times nearly composition, will keep listeners coming back. I have listened to this album twice before writing this review and will be listening to this one for ... read more

Some really quality songs with semi-experimental electronic melodies. Well produced and one of the better electronic pop albums of the last year. Fell a little too typical lyrically to be anything groundbreaking, and could have taken more risks in that department. It's a good album but not a great album.

"Yeah, I couldn't even be bothered with this shit... I'm not going to listen to hours of shitty instrumentals with a few D tier rap songs. If you actually listened to the entire 7hr 45min album let me know, I'll pray for your sanity. I sure as hell couldn't do it."
