This album was huge for me as a kid. I remember being 14 years old, desperately trying with every song I wrote to replicate the energy as well as the hookiness of the songs on this album. Point being, it was among my all time favorites for a long time. And while my initial perception and opinion of this album was perhaps a bit exaggerated, I still do think this album is a very great hour (almost) of punk rock poetry.

I relisten to this every once in a while to see if I still enjoy it, and every single time I end up wondering why I don't just keep it constant rotation, as well as why everyone hates it so much. I find Henry Rollins' poetry to be provocative and while it certainly can come across as deranged or even sociopathic at times, I think it fits the tone of the cover art and aesthetic of not only this album, but the entire Black Flag catalog. To me, this is quintessential Black Flag.
Really wish they'd change things up a bit, but it still makes for a great listen.
Eerie (what a weirdly-spelled word)
Favorites: House of the World to Come, The Worst, Swarms, Cold Medicine
Least Favorite: The Garden
Edit: this grew on me, I love this fucking album.
It's definitely more Alice In Chains-y than before, but I personally don't see how that's a bad thing
Favorites: All Waves to Nothing, Reality Spiral, No More Lives to Go, Lowered
Least Favorites (but still really good): We, Never Wanted That
Probably not their best album, but it absolutely is their most interesting.
Favorites: Greatest-hits, Saw Red, Pool Shark (Acoustic), I Don't Care Too Much for Reggae Dub, All I Need, Cisco Kid, STP
Least Favorites: Waiting for Bud, Steady B Loop Dub, Steppin' Razor
What the band lacks in originality, they more than make up for in showmanship and confidence.
Favorites: Paradigm, Sunny Disposition, God Damn, Exist, Roman Sky
Least Favorites: Simulation
Recently listened to this album for the first time in over at least 6 years and it's honestly better than I anticipated it would be. It's nothing special for the most part - just standard early 2000s Metalcore - but there are glimmers of greatness present throughout.
Favorites: And All Things Will End, Desecrate Through Reverence, Eternal Rest
Least Favorites: Chapter Four, I Won't See You Tonight Part 2
Generally speaking, Fucked Up has never really been a band that impressed me with their sonic diversity or unique song structures. They've always been super solid and I've enjoyed most of what I've heard from them, but a lot of it kind of sounds the same to me.
Not this song.
Right from the start, this track differentiates itself from the rest of their work by introducing a darker, almost black metal edge to a tired indie-infused hardcore punk palette. Personally, I think these last few years ... read more
The two tracks work together exceptionally well. The issue for me is that it feels more like a long intro to a much larger project than an individual release of songs. Maybe that's what it is, even. If that's the case, hearing the finished product could quite possibly shift my analysis to a much more positive place. For now however, it makes for some half-decent background noise.
Not their best, but not their worst at all. Better than the last single for sure. I just hope the rest of the album is a little bit more interesting. Otherwise, it's gonna be a fuckin drag of an album.
