Twenty-three years after the release of their beloved EP, Nottingham rockers Panchiko are back with their first ever full length. It was a long wait, but it was so so worth it. This album is like someone took Cocteau Twins, Los Campesinos, and early Oasis, and distilled them into pure pop-rock perfection. My favourite track on this project is Gwen Everest, but there's not a single skip on this. Bloody great.
The first album from the stand-out indie rock supergroup of the 2020s is nothing short of an absolute hit. With such big names on it and so much hype, it could easily have fallen short and been a damp squib but, instead, it was a really strong 12-song journey through introspective melancholia, with influences from gothic rock and bluegrass to keep the sonic elements interesting and unique.
Melanie Martinez's re-raising of her head above the musical parapet, stylistically inspired by Bjork and in other ways by Johnny Depp's 2022, led to the release of PORTALS. Like her new fashion, this album is hugely derivative of vastly more talented and less reprehensible artists. Overall, don't order Fossora from Wish. And if you must, find a derivative Bjork wannabe that isn't by a vile human being.
This song has Belle Vue to thank, since if it wasn't for Belle Vue, this would be the biggest pile of shit in the city of Wakefield.
An album that is clearly tinged all over by the death of Andy Fletcher, Memento Mori is a return to form for the inimitable Depeche Mode. The vocals remain velvety and gorgeous throughout, with some of the most danceable gothic-pop songwriting I've heard in a long time. And, of course, Ghosts Again is really brilliant - possibly unparalleled in its greatness in this subgenre.
The Missouri-based hyperpop duo build on the absolute banger that was 1000 gecs with a project that moves more into ska-punk. And nu-metal. And acoustic folk. And children's music. This tries to be so many different things that it's an absolute wonder that it does them all so well.
I think the thing that cements this as an absolute masterpiece already is the firm commitment to having fun over everything. Don't get me wrong. 10,000 gecs runs high on artistic merit, especially with it sounding ... read more
I've always said that an album will never get a perfect score from me unless I absolutely can't fault it. The first album from the godfathers of goth rock, Bauhaus, is that album. Everything on this is goth rock distilled down to its purest and most brilliant form. From the production, to the tortured vocals of frontman Peter Murphy, to the songwriting and melancholic, melodramatic lyricism. This is the perfect goth album.
Haha Christian music, silly sky daddy haha haha. Now that the Reddit portion of this review is over please allow me to do this properly.
I'm not a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I'm not even a member of the wider Latter Day Saint movement or, heck, even a Christian of any branch or denomination. I feel like that's an important thing to point out and caveat to make since this album is heavily inspired by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and the faith ... read more
Bearable until the chorus. Then it's ruined with the most infantile interpolation I've ever heard, that utilises itself less well than Leah Kate. Jesus this is bad.
Rebecca Black's latest album is, at it's heart, ten tracks of pop music - and that will definitely harm it in the eyes of some music purists and elitists. However, in my eyes, it's a really brilliant romp through pop and hyperpop, and even pieces of UK Garage, lightly seasoned with well-used influences. It's a great time, and I know I'll be coming back to all ten of these songs for quite a long time to come.
