The user rating of this absolutely should not be trusted as it stands. As I write this, it has 4 ratings. Two of these are 90s and are from two accounts that have only rated this album and have similar names. This album is many things, but it is NOT a 90/100. Even Olivia Rodrigo, the artist Mckenna Grace clearly wants to be on this project, only got an 88 from me- and an overall user score of 69 (nice).
This album is absolutely not Sour. It's barely even got any flavour. It's very much sour in ... read more
'Desire, I Want To Turn Into You' is an album that definitely feels like it gives Caroline Polachek a clear identity with regards to her unique elements and her influences. What could be a really great pop record is, however, dragged down by quite a long laundry list of strange and poor production choices across its twelve tracks. It is, however, pretty solid, and I'd definitely revisit tracks like 'I Believe' and 'Butterfly Net'.
'Homogenic' is an absolute masterpiece of emotionally charged electronic music, thanks not only to the incredible performance vocally speaking, but also the brilliant production all round. The work of Icelandic poet Sjón can also not be understated on this album; his lyrics are heavy-hitting and only add to the experience that is listening to 'Homogenic'.
The iconic Icelandic singer Björk returns for her sophomore effort, once again teaming with Nellee Hooper of Massive Attack. The result is an experimental, yet accessible rumination on mental health, love and relationships, and even some songs that seem to try and evade analysis entirely. This is for sure a music lover's album, that serves up a tapas of eclectic yet elegant options that leaves you amazed.
The all-star cast involved, including the aforementioned Nellee Hooper, Grammy and ... read more
The first album upon re-debut for the famed Icelandic songstress is nothing short of an absolute bombshell to drop on the world. Nellee Hooper's production is as sharp and as driving as ever, and his beats make a formidable vehicle for Björk to showcase her incredible, intense vocal abilities, and her gorgeously melancholic poetry. This may well be one of the greatest albums ever recorded by any artist.
The first album from the artist we'd later know as Björk is certainly not at the apex of experimentation in the way a lot of her later projects are. But it's more important to look at this, not from that angle, but by recognising this is the first album that set her up for success in The Sugarcubes and later solo. Taken as what it is, this is a very nice album full of listenable songs that I would happily return to sometime.
In the words of Eric Cartman, 'you know what Hillary says, you can suck my clit and balls'.
Very impressive. This may actually be the most disrespectfully bad cover ever made of a classic song.
For some pre-context here, I spent rather a bit of 2022 having to review the discography of another comedy rap artist in BARBRA. This means I've heard a lot of comedic, or at least that was the intention, hip-hop music- and I like to think I've developed a little bit of an ear for what works and what doesn't.
That brings us to the EP No More Half Measures. That's right. For better or worse, B Dizzle is here with another EP, this one the spiritual successor and sequel to the past EP Prison ... read more
Regardless of anyone's personal views on the famous drag queen, RuPaul is undoubtedly an icon of the queer community- even if she has been virulently and nastily transphobic in the past, but that's a conversation for another day.
However, it is worth noting that there comes a time in every legendary career where it comes time to just call it a day before it gets embarrassing. Notably, outside the music world, wouldn't it have been massively beneficial for the legacy of Cristiano Ronaldo to ... read more
The major problem with this album is absolutely not the energy that the performers bring to the tracks nor is it their vocals. They clearly can sing, and clearly believe in the H1-KEY project. The fundamental issue that makes this album such a slog to get through is the boring and lazy production. It's generic and frankly infuriatingly dull. This only ceases when it blares tuneless noise at you, like in the first song.
I would likely have never taken a look at KAWAII KAWAII 可愛い if it wasn't for the fact I wanted to kick off my 2023 reviews. I can't say I massively would have missed out. While Acidgvirl clearly shows inspiration from the likes of AG Cook and the late SOPHIE, I can't help but feel that I'd just listen to that instead?
One of my favourite rap hype-up songs. The Australian broadcaster FOX uses this for coverage of the National Rugby League, and there's certainly no better sports anthem around that I can think of. Indeed, I'm a wheelchair basketball player myself, and I like to cue this up on Spotify before going on court. Big up Briggs for providing a hype-up song which doubles as a statement of affirmation to Aboriginal rights in their own nations.
I'm not sure an attempt at Hooverphonic-inspired chamber pop by Gabbie Hanna was on many people's 2022 bingo cards. It probably shouldn't have been. I can see the intent here, and it actually could be good. However, for that to happen, Gabbie would need to be able to actually deliver soft, breathy vocals and not just sound like she's trying not to wake people up. The mixing would also need to be improved, since this track's listening experience is overwhelmed by the staccato strings and ... read more
By far the weakest track that princess xixi has released to date, but still of course pretty solid. Definitely better than the diss track I heard on her that could, unlikely as it is, have inspired it.
A very solid drill track, even if it does rely a little bit on gimmick value.
A very fun and entertaining Christmas drill song by the self-professed Leng Loi herself, princess xixi. It does deal with serious topics, such as the cost of living crisis in the United Kingdom, the same country's rampant transphobia problem both societally and institutionally, and how disaffected people to crime. With that said, it's not a serious, educational song so much; one of those wouldn't have a reference to "Santa chinging you in your bed". Really good fun, so it definitely ... read more
In track 4, she says "this song is fire on mute". At least she's self-aware.
SINDERELLA is an album that in places really threatens to prove a lot of my criticism of earlier Mori and DEMONDICE wrong. However, in places, it's so obsessed with that criticism that it ruins any chance of being more than just a decent album. I could certainly do without the "they're canceling your culture" track, Internet Brain Rot. If the rock and electro-swing were explored more and bad rap ... read more
