Sounds like a shoddy copy of the swedish deat metal sound with some slower doomier moments. Idk why I saw this somewhere as an "essential" death metal album. Shame that a great cover was wasted
Dense atmospheric guitars like on Hushed and Grim: ✅️
Huge, Soaring Brann Chorus like on OmrtS: ✅️
Beautiful haunting eastern guitar harmonies like on CtS: ✅️
Staccato chuggy riff outro like on Leviathan: ✅️
This bouta be a best of Mastodon and I can't wait AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH
Pantera's crown jewel stems from what was probably their most troublesome and difficult time as a collective. But this hardship pays off as this album feels like their darkest, experimental and most thoughtful ever.
The guitars sound like a brush drenched in colour and smeared on the canvas that is the music. Dimebag is not only popping off on the huge groovy moments, but also in the acoustic and solo outings. Anselmo delivers a bigger plate of vocals than ever before and most notably his ... read more
Rarely do I listen to prog journies that even grab me during the somber transitional moments, which have a tendency to derail in the genre. But not here. The choice of ambient filler, keys and various synths is just a perfect balance of childlike Imagination and mature awareness. It can sound like a late 90s Blockbuster soundtrack and an introspective contemplation simultaneously. A nitpick: I think the obsession with pills in the lyrics is a bit annoying, especially considering the metaphor ... read more
Finally Pantera hit their stride. Far beyond driven marks the point of no return, as they settle into their own trademark sound. Absolutely the heaviest they have sounded yet, this thing almost feel like the nu metal Prototype, especially with Anselmo bellowing these rythmic fast paced verses, even sounding eerily similar to a Corey Taylor in the not so far future. Also you gotta love the kick on this, so unique. Imagine a bassier Version of one of those office pendulum swings.
It's just too bland. I don't think the riffs hit nearly as much as they should, a lot of the songwriting is too one note. Also Anselmo and Crew lose the last bits of their hair metal antics, which just hurts the vibe. All there is left is the anger and I find that a bit drab.
This seems like a typical phenomenon back then, to have front heavy albums. All the bangers are in the beginning and in the second half it falls of a cliff. I'd cut the sleep some slack but starting with Shattered it becomes a snooze fest.
I have a very weird relationship with Periphery, as in theory they should be right up my alley. And some of their songs prove me absolutely right, as I think that Wildfire or Blood Eagle are some of the best songs of their genre and generation. But I can't say I have ever truly enjoyed one of their records from front to back. And this album might be the worst of the bunch, since I can't even fall in love with a full song, only moments. But to be specific, this albums art of being bad ... read more
Its not a Brat summer, its a U spring!!!!!
April delivers a very complete and digestible project that wears its inspirations on the sleeve. However does lack the emotional depth and boundry pushing capabilities of Wallsocket.
Oh boy was I ready to dunk on this album after I have heard a lot of hype from the sleep token associated bubble for this band. However the singles did actually impress me. Thats why its even sadder, that the whole album could not deliver as I hoped.
So Karmanjakah basically gives Thall the same sort of treatment that Deafheaven gave Black metal. Stretching a genre that defines itself on darker, minor tones to more uplifting and cerebral major tones. The first three tracks, the singles, excel ... read more
How god intended DnB to be.
Shoutout to All the PS3 games that used songs of this in their soundtrack.
Starts into it with a banger, namely Combustion. Never reaches the heights of that song after that.
It seems Meshuggah are more obsessed about writing complex rythmic passages rather than creating a coherent composition. It can be a lot of fun when you are simply in awe of the musicianship thats being shown off and their unadulterated skill thats at play. However already after the first three songs they can't surprise you anymore.
Man, this really sounds like Horrendous.
*looks inside*
It is 3/4 of Horrendous.
The production almost being too clean kind of holds this a bit back. I do wish it would have been mixed a bit louder or they would have chosen some more aggressive sounds for bass and drums. Regardless the switches between harsh and cleans is done really tastefully, harmonies are arranged gorgeously. They are just flexing impeccable compositional muscles the whole way through. Effortlessly switching the mood and ... read more
I have to admit that I just do not, absolutely do not have the ability to indulge myself in the lifestyle that is being celebrated here. Yeah I know I probably have a stick up my ar*e, but I just can't relate to it like at all. I can not comprehend how this lavish party centric drug abusing mindset is the peak of human happiness one can achieve in their lifetime. Sometimes I wonder "if I lobotimize myself, would I get it?", this thought process just shows how its insulting to the ... read more
What a journey it has been with ppc and my enjoyment of them. Loved their first 2 records and after that they decided to make purposeless Hippie punk, with no direction or meaning in sight.
Okay maybe thats a bit harsh on them, but I was very disappointed, that probably led to emotions being a bit overblown. UNTIL I saw that this project of them had quite the upgrade to their previous user scores and I started to rediscover what made them so intriguing to me in the first place. All around ... read more
