Always liked J. Cole since he was one of the first rappers I truly listened to and his flow & beats are normally pretty good. But geezus the lyrics and concepts on this are truly awful at times. There's some variation in topics, but a majority of the tracks are literally just about sex. This dude deadass even said "I like when you give me head, but I hate when you give me headaches". Oof.
FAV TRACKS: Work Out, Breakdown
LEAST FAV: In the Morning, Mr. Nice Watch
Strong production and Killer Mike & El-p just go in on every track, but I feel like this could use a bit more diversity in its sound. Some of the songs don't hold up the best too (i.e. Twin Hype Back).
FAV TRACKS: Run the Jewels, Banana Clipper, 36" Chain, A Christmas Fucking Miracle
LEAST FAV: Twin Hype Back, Get It
Dem strings... PRETTY AF
Dem lyrics... HURT
"We finally found a winter for your sweater"
FAV TRACKS: Movies, A Lot's Gonna Change, Andromeda, Something to Believe
LEAST FAV: Mirror Forever
Sick synths & a cool concept, but I've never been the biggest fan of Thom Yorke's vocals so it kinda just didn't do a whole lot for me. Plus I just listened to this so I could cross the PTA Anima short film off my watchlist.
FAV TRACKS: Dawn Chorus, Traffic, I Am a Very Rude Person, Runwayaway
LEAST FAV: Twist
Journey Through Travis Scott's Discography Part 4: Good production filled with occasional cool synths though, but also extremely bland and full of seemingly leftover Rodeo tracks. Guess Astroworld is really the only Travis project I genuinely like.
FAV TRACKS: Lose, Goosebumps, Way Back, Through the Late Night, the first 40 seconds of the SDP Interlude, Sweet Sweet
LEAST FAV: Pick Up the Phone, Beibs in the Trap
Has a few decent parts but honestly it’s just a generic trap rap album with songs that all sound the same and make a 43 minute run time feel like 2 hours
FAV TRACKS: The Box, Peta
LEAST FAV: Moonwalkin
Full of boring production and mediocre-trash bars. Plus Highest in the Room is on this before the INTRO track just to get streams up. Bland af
FAV TRACKS: WHAT TO DO?
LEAST FAV: OUT WEST, GATTI
Need to listen to more ambient music
FAV TRACKS: Dance PM, Clouds, Blink, Water Copy, Dream, View from My Window, Soto Wa Ame - Rain Out of Window
LEAST FAV: Urban Snow
Came back to finish my Drake binge and I gotta say this is my favorite Drake project. Like I actually like this I don't get it. Somehow Drake's best project is a mixtape. Definitely feel like it starts off pretty strong, with the first 4 tracks being kinda iconic for Drake, but ends up fading a bit in the second half. Wouldn't be a Drake project too without a bloated runtime and the same rehashed song topics. Still, the minimal, moody beats work well on this and create a more coherent vibe than ... read more
Possibly my favorite Drake album thus far, but that's not saying much. A lot of that comes from a somewhat consistent vibe & this not being over an hour long (by 30 seconds that is). Still, this has a lot of forgettable tracks, corny recycled lyrics & themes and trap songs that don't fit Drake's character at all (i.e. Started From the Bottom). About halfway done with this Drake bender now thank god
FAV TRACKS: Hold On, We're Going Home , Furthest Thing, Too Much
LEAST FAV: Connect
Was watching Mr. Robot last night and since that show is the reason I discovered Joey, I figured it was time to go back and give his projects a proper listen. On jah, Joey really is one of the Top 5 rappers in the game rn and it's disgusting how heavily he's slept on. Like this dude really made this chill, lyrical, fantastic 90s throwback mixtape at 17 years old. Crazy. Really did like this mixtape too now that I've fully heard it and gotta say I love Joey's wordplay & flow. Definitely some ... read more
I've come to the conclusion that Drake is the music equivalency of Friends. Both tend to be something you could put on in the background and not pay attention to while doing other things. They're also both very generic, repetitive, boring and you always know what you're getting into when listening/watching them. Drake and Friends have also both somehow become larger than life and become extremely overhyped considering how unimpressive and bloated in length they tend to be. I will say though ... read more
Smuckers was actually the first song I truly listened to by Tyler so this album kinda has a special place in my heart. It's pretty inconsistent and some of the experimental production & mixing truly is shit, but the highs really are highs and show how far Tyler has come from Bastard. The overall theme of "finding your wings" and doing you is a good message, albeit a bit of a meme of Tyler at this point. Still a solid, most definitely over-hated & grower of an album with a nice ... read more
Better than Goblin in my opinion, but still not great. Just not really a fan of the whole horrorcore theme so I guess that's why I only started getting into Tyler like a year before Flower Boy. Definitely weird to go back and hear Tyler rapping about stuff like murder & rape so jokingly-serious though. It moves kinda slow and feels inconsistent too. Can 100% see how people were into this when it first dropped though, but gotta say it did not age well at all. Will say I like how this dropped ... read more
Slightly better than So Far Gone, but only because the tracks are sliiiiiiiiiiiightly more memorable. Themes of past relationships and success get kinda boring though and this album ends up dragging god damn. Maybe this Drake discography endeavor was a bad idea.
FAV TRACKS: Find Your Love, Over, Miss Me
Ahaha after Drake's newest L at Camp Flog Gnaw, I decided I kinda wanted to go through Drake's discography, even if it's hit or miss. So yea, this is supposed to be the mixtape that kickstarted his career and all but idk this is kinda boring. There are some decent tracks here and there, but I really feel like Drake would do so much better if he trimmed his albums way down. Here's to the next like 8 projects or something
FAV TRACKS: Say What's Real, Little Bit, Best I Ever Had, Outro
Some basic indie I enjoy a decent amount
FAV TRACKS: Disco, Maps to the Stars, Labyrinth, Midnight Cowboy
It was gloomy out so I figured I'd listen to this. Yeah, it really is that good.
FAV TRACKS: Plainsong, Pictures of You, Closedown, Love Song, Lullaby, Prayers for Rain, Disintegration
Jazzy vibes, o so tasty
FAV TRACKS: Speaking Gently, Time Moves Slow, Confessions, Pt. II, In Your Eyes, Cashmere
