Yeah, it's a bit disjointed, but this is criminally underrated.
I think this is the most coherent album I've ever heard. It never surprises you, you know where it's going, but it's just so well tied together.
Although being kind of formulaic, this was a solid album. Very peaceful and enjoyable vibes, it's definitely not hard to listen to. There's something wholly serene about this that I just can't put my finger on. The themes were solid, and this is a pretty unique album. It flows well together, and it's very consistent. However, at points, it feels like the same couple of songs repeated.
What an experience this was! This album is way ahead of its time in many different areas. The brazen defiance of cultural norms and the critiques of the pop culture of the period was super interesting to hear (and also pretty funny). The fact that this is so conceptual, and so well tied together puts it above many other albums of the same time. It was also super trippy, which doesn't put it in any special category, but it was cool. However, the tracks on here don't have much replay value. If ... read more
I rated this higher the last time I reviewed it. Part of that was my inexperience with the time period, and another was my unfamiliarity with the band. After over a year of listening to this album, I've decided to bring my score down a little bit. Most of my original analysis still stands though. I think this is very impressive for a debut, and there are some great songs on here. Sure, it does sound like some other albums of the time, but I don't think they necessarily bit the style completely. ... read more
Do you wanna give yourself a headache in only 32 minutes? If so, this is the album for you! The melodies on here were really good, too bad they were all basic pop melodies. The energy is carried throughout, but it seems like it's too much, there isn't a break. And the vocals! Extremely grating and unappealing. At some points this is decent, but most of the time it's a disjointed mixture of extremely loud and grating vocals over quieter instrumentals. Not a bad album, but it's also not good.
This was a very solid album. It flowed well, there was a good mixture of influences, and the energy was hardly lost throughout. Things seemed to repeat, but it was pretty subtle, and it helped the album remain in style. My only major critique is that it isn't as psychedelic as I think it was trying to be. Definitely a good album though, and solid psychedelia nonetheless.
Australia usually isn't the first thing I think of when I think of punk, so this took me off guard. However, I was pleasantly surprised. Although somewhat repetitive, and definitely in your face, I think this was a solid punk album. This isn't pushing any boundaries, but it's not trying to. Pretty much just some solid punk that isn't trying to be anything it's not.
What an experience this was, and it truly was an experience. Three tracks over 73 minutes made no sense until I finally pressed play. Really, it's just one track over 73 minutes. I wasn't annoyed by this, and I didn't even find it unappealing. But it became background noise, only to reappear, drift away, etc. I think I thought so hard about these tracks that I literally was hallucinating sounds that weren't there. Like I'd hear the music turn in one direction abruptly, only to check myself a ... read more
The first couple of songs were really really good. They felt soft, passionate, and had a very well-done melancholy vibe. Too bad that the songs kind of blended together after that though. Although this album flowed nicely between itself, it felt like it was missing something. The tracks, although pretty decent, were very minimal. Not a bad album, but nothing that'll blow you away.
Scattered and varied, this made for an interesting album. However, this jumps around so much that it's hard to ever really feel it. There were some great moments, from multiple different genres, but there were also a lot of boring moments. Yet somehow, this still happened to feel like a coherent project. Overall, it wasn't the best, but it wasn't bad. Just a lot of jumping from place to place.
Wow, what an amazing album, totally blew my expectations out of the water. The inflections, the melodies, the guitar, the voice, the themes: everything sounds amazing. When all the pieces come together, it makes for an astounding album. Everything is in the right place here, and everything has meaning. I can already tell that this is going to be on repeat for a while. Although this album is great, it does slow down a tad towards the end, and the movements get a tiny bit repetitive. Nonetheless, ... read more
This was unlike anything I'd ever heard before, and I was pretty impressed. It was like a mix of hyper pop and shoegaze, but also neither of them at the same time. I enjoyed the soundscape it created, and it was very consistent throughout. It carried energy very well, and it felt pretty easy to digest while also feeling experimental. The only downside to this project though was that everything kinda blended together. Maybe that's from my inexperience with the genre, or it's just how the album ... read more
For my first ever Chief Keef album, this was pretty much what I was expecting. It was way too long, repetitive, and dull. The lyrics are repetitive, the themes are repetitive, and to a certain extent, the beats are repetitive. There are some higher moments on here though, and Keef's production style is definitely unique. However, with very little differentiation over 80 minutes, this was absolute torture to get through. Additionally, this project sounds super dated as well. Overall, this wasn't ... read more
This project felt like any other Kodak project. Wack lyrics, repetitiveness, disjointed songs, everything just felt off. I'm getting to the point where I'm starting to enjoy Black's wack lyrics. I know when I turn on a Kodak project that I'm going to laugh, and you know what, that's nice nowadays. What's the most egregious about this though is Kodak's lack of growth. I respect him for experimenting here and trying to branch out, even if it is only slightly. Track seven is a good example of ... read more
I really didn't think that this was that bad. It wasn't good by any stretch of the imagination, but it wasn't awful. It was poppy, repetitive, and predictable, sure, but we got a little dubstep here - as a treat. Some of the themes and lyrics were pretty cringe though, especially on track 7. There wasn't much here to make this feel like an album, but EDM is inherently repetitive, and it's always going to be difficult to make a coherent album with EDM. Overall, this wasn't good, but not awful.
I've never loved YG, but it's hard to deny that he has some hits. However, not much came from this album. The themes, lyrics, and beats are all pretty repetitive. Even though he's saying different things here, he's really just saying the same things over and over again in different ways. This wasn't a fun listen. I was hyped for all the features on here, just to be severely underwhelmed. After a while, it was nothing but boring. I did, however, somewhat enjoy the "storyline". It ... read more
Although not a groundbreaking album, this is still very solid nonetheless. There were some great lyrics on here and coupled with the serene soundscape, they were hitting extra hard. The instrumentation here is also great. It's energetic when it needs to be, calm when it needs to be, and everything feels like it's in the right place. There was also some good experimentation, although it wasn't necessarily that, the electronics and momentary avant-garde guitar work were a nice treat. ... read more
